“...as many of our games as possible"
"...does fit perfect for some of the free-to-play"
Not to troll or anything, but a large portion of the GWGuru readers (not counting sarcastic posts) are idiots. ArenaNET aren't under NCSoft's control when it comes making games, they're more indepdenent than other studios.

Amen to that statement. But, welp this is a way to combat gold sellers that's for sure. Why should people who had nothing to do with the game production get the money? I'm kinda for it an against it. I just wonder if that 100 for $1 is 100k and not just 100 gold? lol cause if it is the gold sellers have a much better price. lol

That may be true to some extent, but, NCsoft gets the final word on everything since they are footing their paychecks don't forget. So, if NCsoft wants to implement this into GW now or even GW2 they certainly can an Anet will either have to do it or break contract and get fired and NCsoft will still be able to do it.

You know there was once a chicken called 'Chicken Licken' and an acorn fell on his head, but because he was a bit stupid he thought it was the sky. He ran round telling everyone the sky was falling, and because they were stupid too them believed him
The moral of this story is don't assume anything wait for the facts and then panic if you must!

It will not be used as the business model for Guild Wars 2.

The fact is that in order to milk money out of the game they need to give people an incentive to use the micro-transaction model. They give out the game free so people can try it and see if it fits them, then if they get into it they may choose to spend a few dollars. The game at its core always remains free.
|
So you haven't played the game, nor been with the community long enough to know that after they made thousands of dollars from the coins, they then promptly nerfed the items? There's business then there's outright destruction.

Exteel was and still is a free to download and play online game with a micropayment system. Micropayment is this system in which players can use real life money to pay for ingame items, and this system has already been in existence for a long time now. What the site revealed is that NCSoft plans to use this NCcoin model for their micropayment transactions, which can probably reduce some confusions in between, or at least they believe so.
And just because of this, and that the fact NCSoft published Guild Wars, people are now assuming Guild Wars will receive the same treatment. Just a note, Guild Wars is not free; we had to pay for our cd keys. Consequently, I doubt the same treatment will be applied to Guild Wars as it didn't have a micropayment system to begin with.

People complained about the items being so massively overpowered, so the developers were stuck between a rock and a hard place.
- Leave the items.
Keep the people that bought the items happy, but risk putting off new players who just cant compete against them.
- Nerf the items.
Pray it doesn't annoy the people who bought the items too much. Create a better environment for the free players, who may later become paying customers.
They went with the latter, which definately seems favorable out of the two.

Lol at the accusations of speculation and ignorance being made towards JR!
Calm down, people. GW2 is not going to be Maple Story 2.

IMO, who cares. If it is implemented, it'll be for useless items. I dont recall super uber powerful items in guild wars, just super uber rare skins. If people want to pay for super uber skins that they think is awesome and rare, more power and money to them. (Of course these same people will start to complain that too many people have the super uber skins).

Yeah right and by doing so you risk the element of truth that the sky is really falling like back when all the dinosaurs disappeared. <grin>

This idea has been brewing with a lot of companies, in fact I think pcgamer or some mag just did an article on it. Basically they give mmorpgs away free, then try to get you to buy exclusive content, as opposed to paying $15 a month access. It's usually something cosmetic, like armor skins or something. I suspect it won't be worth their while to do in gw1 with gw2 looming on the horizon, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this in gw2.

Yeah if it's just for gold that's one thing, but, if it's for items as well that's completely another. Selling just gold will just cause major inflation, but, selling items will just ruin the economy.

Screw that.
I've played games that revolve around that system. All of them are BS. If that becomes something that's a part of GW2, I'd probably be angry enough to consider quitting.
Paying real money for in-game cash is pretty much like them saying, "We hated people selling in-game cash for real money, so we banned all of them and decided to do it ourselves!" Not to mention that there would most likely be the addition of exclusively obtained items that might costs and arm and a leg, and also trying to hide a sort of fee into a game whose original purpose was to be without one...
No. Just effin' no.

I doubt GW2 will be involved in this.
I think when they say "free-to-play" they are talking along the lines of Dungeon Runners where you don't pay anything to play. You just download the client, create an account and play. I know you can become a paying member (i.e. pay a monthly fee) and get better weapons and skins so this new model would work well for this game as some people don't want to pay a monthly fee but, yet want access to the super cool skin or what not. This way they can pay a "one time fee" to get that skin and still not pay the monthly fee.
Anyway just my opinion.
