Well, if you really like it, you should get it. I farmed around 2 months, and after I got it I was very pleased with it. One of my favourite mesmer armors around, + that Imposing Mask.. I really don't care what people say about armors, I wear them because I like them, not because someone doesn't like. I'd say go for it

Meh, It's a goal you set and work towards, and a money sink. While I was vanquishing, dungeon crawling, and charting NF on the ranger I had a huge excess of cash on hand, I had already capped all the elites, was near getting a Rainbow Pheonix, and had been converting the surplus into ecto(this keeps me from spending frivolously, and at the time ecto was 4.8k or less at the trader). After about 3-4 months of doing EotN dungeons and trading, and a few quick farming runs when I had the time I had the ecto and shards. It's probably possible to get the resources for it faster, but I play it my own way.
I've started over, and I'm about 1/3 the way there again.

Is it really that hard to form your own opinion of an armor and decide for yourself if you like it? Unless you're buying it solely to try to impress others, in which case it lost whatever prestige it had ages ago.

I think that it's something good to have it you have done everything else, but I wouldn't get it as I'd rather get more... useful things.

I might get some in the near future. I have enough money and nothing else to spend it on. It's not really "worth" it but it's fun to have.

If you want it...work for it and get it. If it requires selling every other toy you have on all your characters just to get obsidian on one character...it's likely going to give you a serious case of buyer's remorse.

As long as the armor will make you happier. There is always a trade-off associated with all your actions. Whenever you do something, you could have been doing something else. It really depends on where our priorities are. You can watch some entertaining show on TV or you can spend some time learning a new language, learning to draw, or exercising to improve your health, etc. It is about investing your time. Some investments yield longer lasting results. For example, if you learn a new language, you can talk, read, and learn about a new culture, broadening your perspective. Other investments provide only temporary effect such as watching some movie. This does not mean that you should not spend time on entertainment, but it is always good to ask yourself a question: "What am I really doing right now?", and, more importantly, "Why am I doing it?" Answering these questions honestly will make you better understand yourself. The better we understand our needs and motives, the more integrated person we become. Indeed, sometimes when we truly understand the reasons behind our desires, the desires themselves disappear.

Used to be a status symbol a couple years ago, not anymore.
Get it if you like how it looks, not to impress other people.
I got my ranger obsidian because I liked it, not for prestige. Most people don't even realize it's a fow armor.

I got three full sets of Obsidian armor 2+ years ago which can be seen here. They appealed to me more than any other Tyrian armors at the time (Factions wasn't out yet) so I saved up the materials and gold and bought them. Was it worth it? For sure. Do I regret getting them with the new armor choices that were later available? No.
If you really like something and are willing to work for it, I say get it.
