I have pretty much been able to get around 450-460 consecutively, highest was 467 from knockdowns/ dumb luck and 4 supers at the end.
I have actually learned more and figured out how to use momentum a bit better, still wish I could observe some of the higher ranks to see exactly how they can do this and get 470+ consecutively.

Racing is about who has the fastest time at the end, not out of the gate. The start you describe has several advantages, and out of certain (bad) gates I will play this start. It gets you away cleanly, which means that you don't have to worry about making contact with the 5 lag-generators (the other beetles) at the start and getting desynched. This makes it a consistent, quick start.
It is most definitely NOT the fastest start if you measure it by:
1) how fast you hit the water boxes and have the potential to achieve echo/SRB
2) carrying the best possible speed through the entire course.
The start you described is not imbalanced. It's a solid, consistent option, but it's not the only way to skin the cat and I'm certain that no one currently in the top 10 plays it with any regularity. (At least, they haven't when I've been paired with them.)
The largest balance problem IMO is that some beetles are faster than others at the start due to the slope of the terrain. Also, the beetles at either end get some protection from Ram that the other beetles don't get, meaning that they generally can save their Shields for later. This enables additional options at the start out of those gates.

Again, you have a measurement problem in your example. The general mechanics are consistent throughout the course. Example: as a rule, you don't want to hit Dash if you're below 50% RPM, because normal travel can bring you back up to 50%. If you get from 50% to 75% with your Dashes rather than to some lower percentage of full, you get better results overall. Your conclusion that there are "better places" to click skills is correct, but there's method to the madness.
Experiment. Use split times. I have several course landmarks that I keep track of, and I know that "if X, I should hit landmark A at time Y." This permits me to tweak what I'm doing slightly and see if I achieve better times overall (as well as determine why). You have to use multiple locations; if you just keep track of one, you may decide that something makes you faster when it really doesn't. Your "imba" start is an excellent example of this. Is it a good start? Absolutely. Does it make you faster overall? Not necessarily. If you can get away cleanly without having to use that start, you'll post better times. I guarantee it.

Remember the big deal about the groups that used the "Hidden outpost" for mallyx? I wonder if there is something like this they have found for thee races that they use to get on the list so many times. Just a thought...

"He does it faster than me , therefore it must be teh HAX !!!"
People have different strategies and understanding of the game and coupled with a bit of luck and a lot of good skill they get the best scores.
Not Rocket science IMO....

An old guild-mate of mine linked me to this thread, and I have a few things to clear up.
I personally haven't seen any of the top racers on what they do at certain parts near the end of the map, but I have seen what they do at the beginning and it all varies. My particular strategy is to ram right outside of the gates and put up harden shell at the 1st wooden pole. I then use dash on the 2nd to last wooden pole. 9/10 times (assuming I didn't get knocked down or rubberbanded), I'm in front of the pack and I usually aim to cross Checkpoint 1 around 18 seconds.
The spiral bridge, makes or breaks potential top 100 scores. If you make one error or lag hits you at a bad time during the stretch from checkpoints 5-7, then that can make a significant difference in your final score. I'm pretty sure some top racers who have gone on a potential 480+ run have fallen victim here.
What color beetle you are does not matter IMO on how it will affect your score. I was GREEN, arguably the worst color to be, when I got one of my 480 scores this weekend.
There are no exploits or cheats to attain top scores. Some old HA guildies/buddies can vouch for me. What I tell most people is getting a top 100 score is 80% luck (getting echo-beetle early on and not getting KD'd/lagspiked) and 20% skill (knowing where to use dash/ram and avoiding potential dangers by using harden shell and d-lunge right after a person behind you crosses a box). I personally stop trying for a top score if I don't get a echo or beetle on the first box on top of the hill.

Yes, that spiral mountain is annoying as heck. I really don't know how you can get past it unless you have a super beetle right there for that part.

Nice system. Example #2343 of how Anet fails on festivals.

And example #19510271 of how Anet just fails, period. Oh, believe me, I know there are a lot of worse companies/games out there. Guild Wars is probably the best MMO I have played, but even it's pushing me slowly out of the genre completely.

Some info..
None of the people in the top 100 "cheat"
The people you see with multiple top 100 scores play beetleracing several hours a day at the very least during each event it has been available.
They have studied how skills work in different situations to create the best possible times.
If you watch them, they will stop if they get kd'd or do not receive the correct power-ups to get top 100 scores.
Also, to the people saying they are syncing, try syncing in 6 people into beetleracing at the same time and see what happens. The chance of ANY of you getting on the same team is low, I can't imagine what the odds of 6 people getting on the same team are. Even IF you had 6 friends in one race you would still need the correct boosts to get top 100 scores.
Beetleracing is all about knowing where to use skills and playing enough matches to receive the correct power-up combos.

I'm Really, Really, Really P I S S E D...
I Spent ALL weekend on this event for the mini beetle.
I manage to get 1 super roller, I echo it. When those two speed boosts are finished I'm 1 min faster than the rest of the group then i get another super roller. I get to the bridge part where there is a glitch and im only at 1:10 (which is good....so far). Then I go slow up the little curvy hill part....yet when im at the finish my record is 2:23 and yet I only get 450,992! HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE. even when im at 2:30, I get at least 447,023...Now this is strange and pisses me off like crazy...
Rollerbeetle FTL....but i need the mini.
X Ekelon X, I dont know how u did it but gratz and also i would really enjoy sum tips. I need to know wat thise raced on. time? speed? how far ahead? for me, its seems time doesnt count...

I can get 450+ without echo or SB now easily if I dont get KD etc. So it seems ping plays a much larger factor than I first thought. With the 250+ ping I usually get it makes it very hard to gauge opponents, water, etc...
At least I get a ton of gamer points
At first it seems like some kinda hax, but practice (years past I assume) + low ping I can see how it's possible now.

My best yet so far, is 451 with no Echo or SB.
Is that good? is that possible for me to get top 100 if I would have gotten a SRB? lol

It's synching. Pretty sad. I've gone up against people in the 100 ranks. Many go untouched while their friends harrass anyone not part of their little clique. Got KDed 12 times in one race, while no one else got TOUCHED. I also got body blocked numerous times while the main guy is left to speed ahead. Of course there are legit winners who deserve the spot in the top 100, but if you think all of them do then you obviously haven't played the mini-game enough to see just how desperate people are to win.
This has been reported last year numerous times and this year numerous times, but it seems ANet doesn't care since it's just a mini-game with a mini-pet for a reward. Not like this is serious PvP or anything...

i've been victom to syncs too -_- .... Body blocking, and numerous KD's , heck i was almost last, and got KD spiked by three other people... Its either a sync, or people like to knock down the people at the back of the race, and not the guy infront of you...
other than that odd race, i love beetle racing . Too bad i rubber band too much to take getting into top 100 all that seriously :/ .

Unlike Ouija I dash + harden at the beginning and then ram at the first corner.
