Is what makes (made) this mission fun to play.
If you were doing well against titans you could play assured that you wouldnt wipe at the very end. Which is very relaxing thing and ads to fun.
If you had problems, you knew you are still up for beatable challenge. If you wiped it was usually soon enough so that no time was really wasted.
No emotions needed to go high.
Now, compare it to gate of madness where Shiro/Lich encounter dificutly was bit over dificulty of rest of mission, and guaranteed beating if you didn't build you team with Shiro in mind. You could flawess rest of mission and still get noticeable beating.
Its pretty uncomfortable to wonder if you suceed or fail when playing. And to kill first mob with possibility that you would be killing them again in half an hour. Fun killer.
Im am all for making the actually hard part of missions happen in first ~10 minutes.

I love the comparision of Hell's to Gate of Madness. It certainly does come very close to mimicking the structure of Hell's.
Both have multiple paths to the end fight.
Both have a secondary objective of closing portals.
Both have 2 "end" bosses.
Both have some elements of pulling at the portals.
If not for the unbalanced nature of Shiro Gate of Madness would be suitable for multiple player/party builds.
The emotional content in GoM comes after the end of the mission when the Gods basically say "Well done, but your on your own. We don't get our hands dirty."
Anet went back to the structure of Hell's for GoM and I really hope they do so again for GW2.

Burning titans + lots of lava + lich + undead rurik = win.
The only thing that makes this mission hard is other players.
This is a great map for heroes and henchies. As I'v done it 3 times during the event with heroes and henchies and not one time did they die.
I did it 7 times with players and it was fail each time.
It's probably the easiest end game mission in all of gw, although I have not yet finished gwen so I havnt played that final mission. Its much easier than nightfall and factions end mission.
Gates of madness is fun also, but once you know how its done it is very very easy. Shiro is not hard at all, just lure him to the gate and pound him into dust. (easiest boss fight of all the games.)
I don't know if its the perfect mission, but it is a good one for sure.

ditto. HM Quarter has a lot of teamwork in it, but is still beatable, making it a real adrenaline rusher+team unifier when you get past each boss :P

They are the best ones.

What was the nerf to it.HP isn't bad but I prefer the Abaddon's Mouth and RoF missions as well as the 3 in Southpeaks.I am not a big fan of the Desert missions or Jungle.

Viz. square definitely, get a shedload of things to spawn and you horde them on to a boat, and beat the crap out of every one.

Hell's Precipice is my 3rd favorite mission in Prophecies (next to Riverside Province and Bloodstone Fen) and it is very much what I liked about the mission status.
Jokunar Diggings from Nightfall is another mission I really enjoy.
One thing significant about missions is: I HATE TIMED ONES!

Amen to that!
I always thought the Factions missions were the best. I liked particularly the Arborstone, Nahpui, Vizunah Square, Tahnakai Temple, Unwaking Waters, and Imperial Palace missions. Not easy -- but exciting.
What diminished the Factions missions for me somewhat were the timed bonuses. I much prefer the way bonuses were handled in Prophecies and Nightfall (except for the timed bonuses in Nightfall -- like Sebelkah and the fight with Varesh ).
Overall, though, I give ArenaNet great credit for creative and interesting mission design.

The dragons lair is one of my favorites

killing glint is always entertaining

You're sick.
But HP is indeed fun, and not TOO challenging if you're not playing with idiots.

While hells has a good story element, it is significantly lacking in group composition. There are no healers or protectors, no reses and if you take one group at a time, you usually outnumber them 2:1. Last time I went through it, we were rounding up 3-4 groups at a time, just to make it go faster.
In terms of missions I like - Dzagonur Bastion HM is definitely up there. Hard hitting bosses, mixed groups, time pressure, mobility requirements all rolled up in one action packed adventure.
My all time favorite mission isn't a mission though, its one of those "special quests". Doing "The Troubled Keeper" in HM is reminicent of the pre-nerf THK seige. Just remember not to accept the reward or you'll not be able to play it again.

While challenging, the whole "fun" aspect is non existant in that mission.
Good function, horrible execution.

Shiro's imbalance is the fact that a certain set of skills totaly own him with extreme ease and most other skills are useless or very ineffectual.
Any mission wich creates a madatory skill/build is FAIL in my honest opinion.
With Hell's Precipice there are skills/builds that make it much easier but none of them are needed to complete the mission. So you can be much more creative and have a great deal more fun rather than blindly using the exact same build, triggering the exact same skills in the exact same order at the exact same time every time you do the mission.

HP HM +bonus was actually fun. Did it with a guildie who is superb at pulling and hero support. Went incredibly smoothly.
However, it was very wierd standing about in the staging area seeing nothing but "r8+ Ursan LFG", but I guess that's a sign of the times....

Yeah, HP is the place to run a clinic on pulling. It clearly rewards you for that approach. I don't think any other mission equals HP in that regard.

Especially near the portals - careful pulling FTW.

I prefer missions that are designed for you to learn and execute specific maneuvers to win rather than those that are susceptible to a few key skills. I agree that HP nearly perfect in that sense.
