Hard to beat the Blizz dragon. Regarding having it on the same date: I admit that's pretty funny, but it would be interesting to see if the show-up was greater than E3's. Now *that* would be quite a slap to the face.

I believe Activision is doing the same.
Edit - Duh, that's in the article. What was I thinking?
E3 shot themselves in the foot. Who in the world thought that taking the best E3 has to offer (public accessibility and sheer size/variety) OUT of the formula was a good idea?
And how does having a smaller, crappy E3 with INCREASED prices help the smaller, independent game developers?
In any case, I'm not surprised NCSoft is pulling out. Doesn't really sound like an ideal use of marketing funds to me, either.

Good job Mercury Angel, i gave up on posting after seeing that.
E3 thought they were the SH*# of gamming propaganda, thinking their name was already enought to make companies fight for a space on their show.
As we can see... they were totally wrong.
We can only watch if they will really rule (eventually) with their cocky atitude or they will fall and hit their faces on the ground.

You assume that they intended to remain an accessible and relevant gaming convention. I think the intent was to become a business expo geared more toward industry insider networking.
Thankfully, they failed.

Um, since no one has mentioned this...
E3 was never NOT invite-only.
E3 for Everyone was a public event, but those were separate.
E3 has always been a press and special invite event, but in recent years has gotten so overblown that it collapsed and is now in a minimalistic mode. Anyone who has followed the actual progress of the E3 (rather than just the announcements) would have seen this coming. Its dying because it ended up too big for its own good. It became less about the gaming industry and more about "booth babes", big production booths, private parties, and the such. It was chaos. But never, other than the E3E events, was it open-invite.
NCSoft not going this year is not surprising to stay on topic. E3 is a dying horse, and unfortunately the chaotic events don't appeal to the common developer anymore. Hell even EA and T2 don't like them anymore due to their ridiculousness.

Oh, that's right. I'd forgotten about the "for everyone" part.
And I guess I remember E3 more fondly from the previews of Prophecies, Factions, and GW:EN. (Don't remember if they previewed Nightfall publicly at E3. I do know it was shown privately in 06 "Also making an appearance will be the next chapter in ArenaNet's Guild Wars franchise, though it will only be shown behind closed doors.")
Nostalgia does distort memories, after all.
