Yeah, I wanted to practice some farming on my Necro with her new 55 gear but with the little lag I was getting, it was a no go.

PM sent last thing yesterday, received this from Regina (she responded fairly quickly) -

Hi Yol:
I've checked up on this with the person responsible for managing all aspects of the live servers, and right now he is not aware of any activity, that would be causing this.

The lag hasn't been as bad today, but I've still had a few rubberbands and pings around 5000. Hopefully whatever it is will be sorted for the weekend.

Ok that's another bs answer. Why does she need to "check up on this" at all. It's not that only a selected few have serious lag, it was world-wide and you could see people dropping everywhere.
And activity that causes it? As RM she should know if something like a major update is in the making and some minor server work would not cause days of horrible lag.
I would have prefered an answer like "Yes, we are aware of the timeouts people experience and are working on it". Short simple and good. Her answer did not tell us anything about the reasons for the lag and more important when it will end.

I'll sell you mine!
150g per minute, 180 for lvl5 lag. Might give you some % off if you buy a big packet.

Except that if the cause is external, like a major hop that most people use to get to the GW servers (you don't have a direct here-to-there connection, but rather follow a series of "hops), then Anet has no control over the situation, and may not know about it immediately.
To put it another way, it'd be like blaming an online store for the delay in your package caused by shipping problems in the postal service. (If you chose to have it shipped by USPS, particularly.) The store only has control over when they get the package out to the post office. After that, it's out of their hands.
I say this because it's happened before. It happens in many different places at differing times. You can see when it's occurring on a large scale, at times, on the Internet Health Report, and may be able to detect it on a small scale by reports from many people on a traceroute.
Depending on where the hop having problems is, it can selectively knock out a few people consistently, or many people, usually depending on its proximity to the target, I think.
</Is not all that tech savvy, so someone else can probably explain it better/correctly>

Yes but even it is something that affects the server performance without Anet doing anything (there can be dozens of reasons like network problems, overall connection etc) I would prefer to hear that they are on it or at least a reason for it.
Taking your store example, it is not out of their hand. Usually if a packet's arrival is overdue you contact the store and they trace the shipment by contacting the postal service. They will gather the information and tell you an estimated time of arrival for your packet. You will still get it late but you will have the feeling that something was done, know when you will get your packet and most of the time you will get an explanation as for why your packet arrives late.
It would have been nice to get some feedback that is actually including anything helpful instead of 1 sentence without any information.
You can sum up the whole process:
Players asks Regina: "Hey Regina, a lot of players experience immense lag and timeouts. Is there anything you can tell us about it?"
Regina asks Server guy: "Hey Server Guy, a lot of players experience immense lag and timeout. Any idea why?"
Server Guy: "No clue"
Regina responds to Player: "Server guy has no clue"
That's just not enough. I do not blame them for the lags. Just for the lack of communication and interest they show. Nothing against Regina, I know that she can only deliver what they tell her. If that is really all the "Server Guy" told her the major communication lack is Anet intern.

Your resident skeptic says: You do realize there's thousands of miles of cables and hundreds of nodes and ISPs between your computer and Anet's servers, right?
There could be a node malfunctioning ANYWHERE in the world. This has happened before, and made the community look like prats for screaming blue murder at Anet, before it was discovered a major node routing into the US from all over the world had gone down.
A natural disaster could have affected a link somewhere. We've had 2 in 2 weeks, and it's Tornado season.
Before you're quick to blame, think outside the Anet servers. If they say all is functioning properly, they won't be BSing for sh*ts n giggles.

I have been monitoring this throughout the day and contacting various departments to check up on this issue. The people at the data center report no issues that could be causing lag. If you are experiencing lag, please contact customer support so they can gather data and get results from their diagnostic tools.
