Yes, i actually copy paste the templates, for pvp mostly
Actually, they've made me fall in love with the assassin class since i have never touched the assassin class when factions came out

Absolutely not. It's fine for people who are completely new to the game, but after that you can easily see that half the builds are either outdated or underpowered. I'd rather make my own, thank you.

On characters other than the ones I'm comfortable with (ie, warrior, monk, ranger) I use builds. But I only use them to get ideas, and change things.

This pretty much sums up my feelings. I occasionally look at it to see what's going around, but usually every build I would take into consideration is either so bloody obvious that everyone has thought of it, outdated, or something that is poorly designed and can be greatly improved upon.

I'll look at them for ideas, but I've always adapted them if ever I use them I never use the "Cookie Cutter" Version. It often doesn't work for me.

Heir to the Master
All Hail to Heir to the Master
put your necros on that he'll never die (unless you don't know how to control it) lol, i've been using that on Master of Whispers since i discover that build on PvXWiki (back then it was still guildwiki - sub-page - build). Genius build. Master of whisper never dies in my group.
i made a slight change to it, replacing animate bone horrors to shambling horrors.

I liked Guild Wars so much when I got it that I wanted the game to last so I avoided using wikis to speed up progress, either by looking up builds or maps, or quest walkthroughs.
For a lot of people it's more fun to figure out things on your own, despite it already being figured out and posted on a wiki.
But I understand that not everyone likes experimenting and exploring and just wants to beat the campaign, or start winning PvP matches right away.
Neither is right or wrong, just different ways of having fun for different people.

I heard that PvX warrior build that is W/Mo with Mending, Healing Hands, Healing Breeze, Vigorous Spirit, and Frenzy is amazing. Note, you are not allowed to bring any other skills, just those above. If you do bring any other skills, your bar would be so overpowered, that it will crash your game, so don't try and bring lightning hammer or echo/arcane echo, or even that amazing healing touch skill!! HOW DARE!>!>!

I think the most common "mistake" that new players make is to go 50:50 with their primary and secondary profession skills.
On top of this, and/or as a result, their attribute points are in 5-6 different lines. They also tend not to be aware of the 15 attribute point quests.
Part of the problem is skill acquisition. New players get 2 skill each from each attribute line. And in Pre-Searing and other new areas, players do not have enough free skills to form 1-2 attribute line builds.
I would say that almost every vetted Wiki build for general PvE would steer new players towards the way the game is more efficiently played.
Play mostly as your primary and have 1-2 skill max from your Secondary.
Unless you're very familiar with the game mechanices, before you can attempt anything else.
For all those people moaning about WikiKids, I would say that people who are not even aware of the Wiki have a much steeper hill to climb.
I think most online games these days are frustrating for people who are not clued into forums and online resources. Almost everyone design content with the assumption that people have the collective information.
Its easy to say "sucks to be them", but most people who are new to the genre of games would be like that. And they are the new blood that keeps the industry alive. One day they'll pwn our arse, perhaps.

I use PvX wiki, ONLY for inspiration in creating new builds. An idea to work from. But of course builds i make are always better (not at all trying to put myself above build posters, but you get what i mean)

I use them, sometimes down-right copy them. No need to make it sounds like I don't or I am better than the templates.

Because its pointless, the unwashed masses get to decide how good things are, without having any credentials or even experience.
Auron and myself looked at a couple of GvG builds where ppl had rated the thing, and we doubted if 90% of them had ever even PLAYED a GvG match..
Take my friend Greven's Rt/P weapon of remedy/spear spamming RA build, not the best thing in the world, but did it deserve the dozen or so 0-0-0 votes it recieved within hours? ZERO effectiveness? That should be reserved for bars with no skills and no weapons. This is exactly the same at the other end of the spectrum: people voting 5-5-5 on stuff. Thats a perfect build, something repeatedly tried and tested. I can think of a handful of things which deserve this status, yet I see, time and time again, mediocre crap being awarded pages of 5-5-5s.
A large percentage seems to vote nothing but 0-0-0 and 5-5-5 again and again, with no punishment.
The community seems to revel caster-spikes and soul-reaping abuse builds in GvG, HA and even more worryingly, TA. This begs the question of whether these people have ever played anything that isn't these..
Now there is an innovation category, which takes up a whole 3rd of the final marking. Whoever the higher powers to are, have decided that innovation is equal to effectiveness. These are the same type of morons who refuse to use a "cookie-cutter" (read: proven and effective build) because... why?
The whole thing is corrupt, biased and pretty damn poor. (Though, a massive improvement on the old GuildWiki build system, I might add.)

well i tend to go out with my own build for most areas untill i come to an area that is totally impossible then i try and work my own builds round it, and when that wont work i go to wiki for ideas, usually on my heroes though.
Being primary mesmer there are not too many builds out there that i like, so its all my own on it. Pretty much the same for any other charcter i use.
Heroes however i tend to take out what is needed for the area as i don;t really PUG anymore and the way i see it, when you do an area you are usually looking for specific builds or characters so why not use wikik for them

I use PvX build for character whose i don't know anything.
For my primary character i make my own build.
For heroes i prefer to get feedback on forums because i'm boring to test and try if each skill works well or not in heroes ^^
