Punishment for selling accounts
Hey everyone,
Me and my brother have been playing gw since it came out over 3 years ago on two separate accounts, until he quit the game and eventually left me with custody (pretty much gave me) of his. Not knowing what to do with it, I saw someone buying accounts for in game money in LA and fell for his scam, giving him the gw and plaync names and passwords and being left with a ridicolously meager sum for it (he promised 600k and delivered about 15)
Yes, I know I've broken the EULA and rules of conduit. I also know that was amazingly idiotic of me, and I certainly don't expect to find any sympathy on this board. Laugh and point all you want, I assure you I already chastised myself throughly over this, so any further insult would just be kicking a dead horse... :P
The reason for opening this thread was to ask anyone who might know: what punishment would I face for reporting the account scam (and therefore my infraction of the rules) to Anet? Gw's official site says in-game infractions are punishable with either account suspension (throught the "marks" system) or account termination, but isn't specific regarding which infractions warrant which punishment. I have no problem getting a temporary suspension, but as much as I seriously regret my clumsy illegal actions, I don't think anyone can blame me for wanting to avoid a permaban on my main account after getting scammed of my secondary one (after all, this was my first infraction in over 3 years of gaming).
And also, what are the chances of Anet catching the scammer? And what would they eventually do with the recovered account? My guess is they would probably terminate it, since I'm no longer entitled to it (even though it was technically my brother's, since he purchased the games).
To sum it up, bear in mind that, even though you might not have any symphaty for me, the report and control of scammers affects all players in the game, and I am merely trying to do what little I can to correct my mistakes.
I wish to thank in advance anyone who might reply to this constructively...

What makes you say that? From what I've read on the official site, they seem pretty serious about punishing this sort of things...

Read the rules of conduct if you get the chance.
Quote:

Please be aware that failure to comply with these rules of conduct may result in the termination of your Guild Wars game account according to the Guild Wars User Agreement.

All I do have to say is that you must have felt really guilty to post a thread on this forum about something you did wrong in regards to the rules of conduct. That's something quite rare to see...

Anet = Fail
Its funny how they have control over what we had already paid for.
If they had slapped a sticker on the box saying that we cannot sell our accounts/items, then I would have never bought this game.
Anyways.... as for you, just move on.

@Slowerpoke: Yep, I have all the cd keys (proph+nightfall+ factions). Is there some mail contact I can write to? Thanks dude.
@Malice Black: to be honest, your replies look a touch pessimistic. Yes I've broke the eula, but that doesn't necessarily mean Anet wants to throw my account into a volcano and forget about me: their support section stressed the "progressive punishment" method, contemplating initial mild penalties (temporary suspension, etc) that could become more serious in case of reiterated violations.
And even assuming they won't help me in any way, I certainly don't see why they would let this guy get away with it and try to scam other players.

Unless the person you sold it to has access to your email account you can get password recovery and reclaim the lost account. This could have changed so just contact support and inform them of your mistake. If anet expects people to just trash their cd keys and games if they no longer play then they will be shocked at the number of people who transfer ownership to friends and other people.
If I no longer play, Then I would give the game to someone else. I'm not gonna let my money rot on a shelf because anet says so.
I might not own the online data, but I do own the cd and the paper with the cd key on it and I can control what happens to it. If I want to give it to someone, I can. Anet would never know unless that person said they were given an account. And it should matter anyways.
Just more BS rules. If I no longer play I do not care what becomes of the account. So saying they could do this or that on the account matters none at all to me because I will never again use that account.
Nothing wrong with taking over your brothers account. Nothing wrong with selling an account for in game money if your never gonna use it again, as long as you dont reclaim the account and scam people. But its anets rules and anets game. So follow them exactly or dont get caught breaking them.
Having an extra account is kinda cool cause you can use one account to play on and the other to sell items for in game gold and trade. So you keep your play account freed up and not loaded down with crap to trade to other players. And the sell account can produce more minipets each year for you to keep or sell.

You broke the EULA, you deserve to be permanantly banned from GW and never to have another account.
You will be forgotten about by Anet, they dont like rule breakers, neither do we.
What are you expecting? For Anet to sympathise for you for breaking their rules of conduct and to get your account back? It will never happen, you broke the rules, now face losing your account to the person you sold it to and never getting it back.
Threads like this destroy the GW communities sanity more and more.

You got punished enough. They don't need to do anything.
As for scammer, they'll continue to do whatever they are doing. They won't be banned or acted upon in any way whatsoever.
I mean, seriously, do people really fall for these?

They wont ban you for life, lol. they may just temp ban you for a week or so and put marks on the sold account. People are a bit harsh and anal about the game.Although it is annoying as hell to see account buyers and sellers spamming in town and those who deal with them are promoting their bad behavior. so expect something to happen.

Seriously if threads like these have such an impact on you or anyone else, then I would say you should step away from the forums for awhile. Way to sensitive if something like this bothers you. Its a public forum, not a dictatorship.
Not like you have never posted pointless crap before. Be alittle more understanding. Besides, the GW community is crap anyways. so what difference does it make. people are way to anal about these things.

Just so you know, the accounts are considered non-transferable in their entirety - your brother isn't permitted under the EULA to give it to you at all. The only kind of permitted transfer is a one-time exchange when the account is created between a parent or legal guardian and a minor in their custody.
That being said, unless anyone has any actual experience in these matters with the support team, the only thing you can really do to find out is actually try it.
Since the bulk of the responses have been, and will largely continue to be, negative and directed at the dead horse of the account sale, I'm going to close this.
Best of luck.
