I play on 56k every summer (cheap ass parents). Anyway, my ping never gets as bad as Pumpkin Pie's, usally around 800ms. FPS will get low and occassionally spike. HBs are basically impossible (any bit of slow loading and you lose). Interupt and finiesce builds are also impossible to run properly (you can run interupt, but you'd have to spam your interupts, which isn't the proper way to play that build). Other then that, you can still play around and enjoy yourself. You might occassionally slow load into RA, but once you are in you'll be okay. It won't affect organized PvP too much, though running vent/ts can be tough if you don't optimize your system. The only time 56k really just didn't work was during the NF PvP preview weekend. A large spike in the number of users on a.net's servers + all that new content to download just killed my connection.

Just make sure you have all the areas loaded on your comp before moving and you should be fine.

I run on 28.8k with no problems except for weekend events like x-mas or triple drop weekends. Got a great comp but I still keep most my settings on low. Biggest thing is not to be loading or running other programs that use the net like web pages or Vent/TS.

Hmm I play on 512k and really dont have any problems, can run webpages, use vent/ts, sometimes it goes >300, but most of the time is just fine ( gvg, ab anything).

Don't worry about it ... it should be ok if the line is stable... most of the time I play with torrents downloading at the back leaving only 80 - 60k for gw.

Won't be much of a difference for GW, since it doesn't need much to run. The only downside... you can't do much else other than GW and your bandwidth will suffer.
At least you HAD 4mbit. Australia's connection is GODAWFUL so makes no difference if it's 512k or 100mbit, we still get 200+ ping.

I'm a Senior Systems Engineer(in computer systems) for a University(So it's my job to know about these kind of things) .. As a previous user stated. Line speed has VERY LITTLE to do with your ping in guild wars. Ping is the round time for a packet in game. That gets determined by your geographical location, and the entire route your packets follow to the server. And whether or not your ISP is shaping your traffic. As another user indicated somebody on dail-up could be getting a better ping in Guild wars than a user that has a 100mb/s connection. It all depends on your ISP usually. Personally do a ping test or a tracert(or traceroute on linux) and have a look what kinda of ping you can expect for gw. PM me if you have any more questions :-).

Quality of the internet is as important as the speed perhaps more so.
I am on a 20 meg service right now which is great but that can drop by half at peak times and weekends between 1800 and midnight are usually bad then I have at times been as low as 4.
Which probably means when I was on the 2 meg service with the same company I was usually gaming at 512 to 1000 and GW was just fine.
When they did maintenance it was a problem as there where times when gw was unplayable but then they announce maintenance times so I can work around them.
A 512 which is a constant 512 should have no problems at all.

You should be ok, and btw ping is unrelated to bandwidth.. I have a 4.7mb connection yet regularly get 200+ pings in AB, luckily when in TA or RA my ping is stable at 109.
My friend has a 768k connection and always has a ping below 100ms.

Do you even know how much bandwidth does GW use?
Most of the time it's way below 1kbps, more during intense battles or highly populated towns, but it gets above 2kbps only in some extreme cases.
Ping in GW is completely unrelated to bandwidth (maybe except some superslow connections like 128kb which are just slow), however it's heavily affected by other traffic in your network - a software limited background download using 30% of your bandwidth can double your ping in GW!

i played gw with 56k (dial up) for a while. it's not bad at all - the only bad thing is that it took forever to load maps. other than that, nothing was wrong. (it was a fairly new pc)
