Guildwars won't die off because of gw2, if anything kills gw it will be gw.
I am 50/50 on buying gw2 right now, I might not, or I might, just depends.
I will still play GW1 long after gw2 is out. Don't worry, older games don't shut down because newer version come out. Diablo 1 is still played by a few online. Diablo2 lod is still running strong after so many years.
There will still be thousands of players on gw1 after gw2 is released, some due to love of the game, some due to inability to upgrade pc's to run gw2. some who do not have the money to buy the game or upgrade pc's and some who see how anet treats players and refuses to buy another product of ncsoft.

It will probably actually never die.
There are still oficial servers for Lineage I & Ultima Online (it's shard based but there are shards that exist since day 1).
For an example if you want old database servers.

Heroes/Henchmen killed grouping so why does anyone care if the player base withers in GW1? Most people don't directly interact with others as it is so why should they care if there are 100 or 1 million other people playing?

People like to hang on, or those of us with limited incomes may stick around GW1 longer simply because we can't or don't want to afford GW2.
Also, with the HoM, there may be some increased demand for GW1 after GW2 comes out if the rewards for HoM stuff is cool enough.

I think Guild Wars is already dead, if not it's close. Guild Wars 2 will surely clear out the rest of the population.

But as best as I can tell, there should be no trouble at all in creating a new GW1 character even after you've already bought, installed, and played GW2, filling their HoM, and then creating a new GW2 character to collect those achievements.

They said HoM unlocks would freeze when GW2 went live - the idea was to reward people who played Guild Wars before GW2, and stuck with the series.

best post of the thread ¬______¬
anyway, It won't die out or at least not quickly, I do plan on getting GW2 when it's out but I will still be playing GW1 just to max titles, see the story again (I like the story) and even do some pvp. Plus I hope in GW2 that the story goes from dark and depressing (it seems like that from the movement of the world thingy) to happy by the end of it <_<
I also have to wait to see the system requirements for GW2, I know my comp will run it but if its too high for my girlfriend, I won't have her to play with until she gets a better comp (but she can run GW:EN on highish more or less so heres hoping)

Killed grouping for you. Except for a few places (Henge of Denravi & Maguuma Stade (though why anyone'd need a group there is beyond me, unless they let themselves be run) in Prophecies, for example, or the Jade Quarry) I have no trouble finding people to group with when I want/need them - at least during the late afternoon and evening in the US time zones and American districts.

It's been said before, but I don't think you can really compare Guild Wars to Auto Assault, which recieved very bad reviews and was played by all of about four people. I'm sure those four guys were upset, but there is no way they could continue to afford paying for the servers for those few guys. Obviously, this is a bit of an exageration, but you get my point.
It was woefully unpopular. Guild Wars is not, coupled with the fact it's not really an MMO, and doesn't cost as much to keep runing, means it's unlikely to be shut down, for as long as people are still playing.
And remember, there's the Hall of Monuments, I could see a lot of people going back, or even new players joining the original GW once GW2 is out and we learn what the rewards are.

I have not played GW in almost two weeks due to the whole hacked accounts and anets unwillingness to do anything to protect the players or even to really stop the hackers. My self and about 60 people are basically on strike from the game til we hear the problem is solved. if the problem is never solved then We wont be back. I have been playing many other games and doing other activities that have brought me far more enjoyment than GW has in a very long time. One of which is diablo2 LOD.
I think NCsoft should get out of the gaming buisness because they suck at it. They are experts at making annoying/disappointing/frustrating games that reward the players with very little.
GW1 will always have a player base, even a small one. take away all the players who find other games they like, newer version of gw, or simply grow tired of gaming. There will always be the original gw fanatics who adore this game. I for one wouldnt be to upset if they did shut down gw1.

Very good point, Players will get all anal about not having this or that unique skin item that you can only get from HoM in gw1 so they will buy gw1 and all installments and grind away a few years just to get Everything they can in gw2. Thats what we in the real world call
OCD. Which makes me giggle, Picture the hard core collector who has every item in the game, now picture his internet failing for a week and he misses one event and misses one mask, now he can never truely gain one of each item in the game. He goes insane. (insert giggle here).

GW is not dead, I honestly don't see it dying after GW2 comes out. I do anticipate the player base to become smaller and most of the missions to appear deserted for at least the first few weeks after GW2 is released. But then, after everyone has gone through GW2 I suspect a lot of people would still go back and play certain areas in GW.
