We have all seen whats happening happen before in other games, I'll point out a VERY good example as both Ghost Recon and Guild Wars followed a VERY simular path.
Ghost Recon was released and had a huge online player base and no monthly fees, they then released several expansions, increasing player base and "accounts sold" Ubi Soft then announced Ghost Recon 2, creating quite the hub bub by saying it was for console only and PC gamers would have to wait for GR3 (which was years away) and that no more new content would be released for GR1., All that sound pretty simular?
Other FPS games were being released(CoD, Soldner, The Battle Field series) and GR1 becam Ghost Town instead of Recon, it was too long of a wait for GR3 to stay in GR1. So people moved on.
Same thing is going to/already happening here. New games are on the horizon and 2 years is too long to wait for GW2 after 3 years of GW1. AoC and Warhammer will start sucking up bored players and soon GW will be dead, with a burst of acivity prior to the GW2 release.
Yes GW has alot more replay ability and a bit more draw to come back to it that GR did, but 3 years is enough with 2 more years to wait. The "Weekend Events" just aren't enough to keep people online when "All New and improved" games are being released.
Also, GR3 had a different setup to it that PC people didn't like, on GR1 you could host your own severs and GR3 you had to use theirs only. The big changes were not well liked at all and the game was not as succesfull as GR1 Also accounting for the lack of play was the fact that poeple had now dedicated time/money/effort into other games and stuck with them while waitng 2+ years for the new GR.
By the time GW2 gets released how many of the GW1 people will be locked into other games at that point? I'm already not happy with the inabillity to "Point and click" move that the 3D playing field of GW2 is bringing to the table, and there are other big changes yet to come. Higher level cap, instanced zones, yeah........
All in all the day they said "GW2 is coming someday far away and no new content here" ANet slit the wrists of GWs and right now its simply bleeding out until it dies, and when it gets revived far from now with GW2, it won't be as strong.
