On the subject of Bladed Aatxes. It's a Bladed Attacks to me, I don't care what you say. Doesn't anyone else do that when they read something that would take too much effort to actually pronounce? Like with Hermoine in harry potter, I simply assigned her as "hermine". I don't know what Djinn's pronunciation is, but I roll with "Jin"

Inscribable =/= inscriptable
tome =/= tomb
elemental =/= elementary
primeval =/= primal
voltaic =/= voltage

Stygian is easy. Stygian refers to the river Styx, which is pronounced sticks.
Take the first part of sticks - sti - and add jee-un. Sti-jee-un.

Phonetic spelling never makes much sense - and I never understood those weird IPA things wikipedia uses :/

(Dictionary.com says /ˈstɪdʒiən/Pronunciation[stij-ee-uhn] which is what I just said ^^

Who plays with the sound turned on anyway? That may, in fact, be the problem :\

All this time I've always pronounced aatxe as axe-atee and now that I look carefully at this, it sure seems completely incorrect .

So basically I'm wondering what kind of funny incorrect pronunciations have you guys had, could be a friend who corrected you or maybe one of the in game cutscenes.
lol...I've always pronounced it like "at-axe" for some wierd reason...

I dont really care what the characters say, since they actors paid to read.

If Cantha is based on asia, then Luxon should be pronounced with the X a "sh/ch" sound.

Luxon with the hard X is a western pronounciation.

Its not Mex-i-co. Its Me-"Shi"-co.

Yep, and Grasping Darkness is pronounced "squid".
Grasp of Insanity = Little bastards.

Tombs/tomes is also one of my pet peeves.

The worst i have seen yet though, was a guild member who no matter how many times he was corrected called fow "Fisher of wow". Now im sure they do have fishing in world of warcraft, but this is guild wars.
He seid we where all taking the piss beccause "fissure of woe" makes no sense.

I don't see how people can mispronounce lich, luxon or justiciar though as they are all pronounced in cutscenes. Djinn is pronounced "Djinn", just less emphasis on the D.

There also seem to be a ton of culturally ignorant players who cannot pronounce a single character name in factions unless its "Chan".

Yet if you pat attention to the storyline, the luxon culture is based on roman/greek influences, only cantha itself is asian.
How many asians have you met named "archemorus"?
Kurzick is based on germanic/eastern european culture hence "brauer" and "durheim".

I just gave up and called them "attock-zees".

"Fissure of Woah" will always be an old-time favorite, though : )

I always pronounced them "a-taxi"

I also find the common mistake with Sliver Armor, and how so many people thought (and still do >_>) that it is Silver Armor.

Both make sense, really. It can be seen as "shiny and reflective as smooth silver" or something, so that like the damage you inflict bounces right back. Plus it's got a shiny knight in the icon.

Nonetheless, I'm really not going to nit-pick about the mistakes as long as people know what they're talking about.

The ones that have always gotten me are:

Aegis: Aey-guess as opposed to the correct pronunciation Eee-giss
Maelstrom: Male-storm ^^

When the deep first opened up, people on vent called Kanaxai = Can -ax - eee or Can - ax - eye

I believe the proper pronunciation is Khan - a - shy.

Correct me if I'm wrong please.

I've always said "ah-tax" too, but I guess I'll try to train myself to say it right.

1. We can't spell it phonetically because we don't know how it's pronounced. At least we didn't until recently. But that doesn't help, since "aatxe" resembles "ah-che" only the the presence of the letter "a."

2. "Aatxe" is not a valid letter combination under the rules of English spelling/phonology. We're uncomfortable with "Aa" at the start of a word, but we'll pronounce it as a single "a" for loan words like "aardvark" -- which we consistently misspell as "ardvark." (It's also in onomatopoeia like "aargh!" signifying a loooong "a.") A "tx" in the middle of a word is flat out. We can't even hope to pronounce it. It's not a valid compound consonant, and there can't be a syllable break between them since "X" cannot start a syllable unless it also starts the word (except for some silly British variants on "tion").

The result is that we (unconsciously) try to conform it to the rules of spelling/phonology by breaking up the "aa" and the "tx." Move an "a" and you get "ataxe," which is at least pronounceable as an English word. And, coincidentally, more closely mirrors how I tend to say it, "ah-tax." Sometimes I remember that their should be a double letter in their somewhere, and that usually leads to "attaxe," since "t" can sometimes be doubled, but never "a" or "x" or "silent e." Since the "e" is silent and non-functional (I haven't the slightest inclination to say "ah-takes" because of it) sometimes it gets dropped, leaving "atax," which my mind realizes is too short to be right, so it must be "attax."

Though I may be mistaken, I think I remember it being pronounced differently during a cutscene.
