Since when I discoveed the properties of the directsong.dll file, I like to temper with the ingame music.
I listen to Guild Wars Bonus music tracks most of the time, while playing, but I try many other things.
For example using music from other games.
I can make this track:
http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=qtNUOp3bldI
Play during the fight with Shiro.
The result is quite more... motivating.

If anyone is familiar with the band Lordi, then I listen to a large plethora of songs by them when I'm doing anything other than a mission.

You're not allowed to do that until you have a Pokémon avatar.
I listen to whatever's playing from my music collection.

I listen to the DirectSong sound tracks.
As for turning off the sound effects, my wife does that. Drives me nuts. But then I can hear the mobs before they can attack which means that many of them are dead before the clear the popup animation.

Usually anything in the range of Slipknot, Iced Earth (Travel in Stygian in DoA always makes me smile x]), System of a Down, Opeth, Rammstein, Sonata Arctica, Rage Against the Machine, Grim Skunk, Tool, A Perfect Circle (Counting Bodies Like Sheep To Sleep to The Rhythm Of The War Drums can stay on repeat for a LONG time, I love the drums on it...), Deftones... and more...
Fast-paced stuff that's not TOO heavy, what.

Well, Zeppelin and Sabbath are considered classic rock in my book. They really formed the beginnings of metal though. Judas Priest was the first "real" metal band imo, cuz they wore leather .
I'd think Slipknot and Disturbed are heavy metal.
I saw this documentary about Metal. Forgot what it's called but there was a part that listed all the genres. Good stuff.
