Honestly? Given how nasty the community - not GWG, but Guild Wars in its entirety - can be, I don't think it would be unfair to assume such.

Well.... this is the way the game is made. What else is there to spend money on? Of course, it is easy to get the best in the game, which leaves so much money left that people do not know what to do with it. They assume the more expensive it is, the more prestige it is. Seriously, If you had the money, I personally think that YOU YOURSELF would not settle for 1k maxed armor. Are you just going to leave all that extra money sitting around? Heck, you can even argue people who buy 15k armor is doing it for prestige, let alone FoW Armor/Chaos Gloves. Why pay 80k ++ for a set of maxed armor when you can buy one for 5k?
Even when people respond to you by saying "Why are you jealous?". Seriously. Think about it. Deep down inside, they think what they have (FoW Armor DYED BLACK/Chaos Gloves) is really cool and hip. Its actually quite hard to find someone that buys them who thinks they are ugly.

I'm with you on this. There are people that think they look good, but all the ones with the "ur just jealous" crap buy stuff because they think it makes them better than everyone else. They can think it makes them better all they want, and I will continue thinking they look ridiculous.
I have most sets of armor in the game that I like, including several FoW sets. But, there are several FoW(and many 15k) armors I will never buy because I think they look horrible. It would be nice to have the expensive armor for them, but I'm not going to buy it if i think it looks bad. I'm not going to get into what I do/don't like, because thats not what this is about. Its about the reasons for buying expensive things, to look good, or to look expensive. I like both, but I'm not going to sacrifice looking good, just to look expensive.

I love my main, so I buy him the most expensive stuff. It's not about epeen or w/e. It's just more about saying "hey, I really like my dervish and he's my main"

and thats great for you, but just because some people are jerks, there's really no reason to stopp to their level and be a jerk back to us all. on my warrior i wear expensive armor, all black and white, but because i like it, and nothing else. what gives you the right to judge others simply because you were judged? you lash out at us, then claim we're all against you like some sort of conspiracy.
you play for why you want to play, and let others play for whatever they want to play for. imo, the game is build around vanity, so if you don't like it, or the people that participate in that, then maybe gws isn't the game for you.

"Looks good" is in the eye of the beholder. I don't like that mask, but others might. More power to them.
Some of the "Expensive" armor looks good. Some not. Again, personal perception.
For example. I like Ranger Drakescale armor the best. FoW armor is also nice. I also do not like black dye. I prefer white. It's all personal preference.

to OP.
Your observation about rare items (ie expensive) might have a point but to conclude that cheaper or common items look better is just not right.
When I just started with this game, i thought FDS is cool so i did everything i could to get one. and for a long time, i thought i was a god because i was using FDS. Is there anything wrong with my feeling (or my opinion) about the fds as the best looking sword in the game? i don't think so.
So, if you don't understand players who think expensive items are cool, its alright. There's nothing wrong with that. But you shouldn't walk around telling them that they have a poor choice. Because if you do, then all of them (those rich guys wearing expensive armors and weapons) will be justified for calling us (poor guys who can only afford 1k armor) noobs because we cant afford to buy expensive items. besides, see judge "beauty" differently. from where i came from, if you wear a green shirt and a violet pants, they will call you names. in other places it's cool.
if you have a 55-monk, do you think that cesta from prophecy should really worth 5k (or higher)? i think that's the ugliest item i saw that worth more than 100g. yet people are buying it (i even sold one for 8k).

Answer is simple. They want a large epeen to stroke. Thus they go for the most expensive stuff they can find. I then have to listen to a guy in black obsidian armour and chaos gloves with GWAMM r6 talk about how great Ursan is. Or someone with Hero/Zaishen rank running around spamming their emote because that's how they get their fun in Gw.
On a positive note, check out the Dawn of War 2 forums.

I have 1 FoW set, on my monk, which I bought because I like it. But on my warrior I will not buy it because it's gross, I actually have a mixed armor set on my warrior that I think looks better than most complete sets around. I just where what I like :P

i reckon that the dread mask is so awful that it looks great xD
i have one on my male monk and it jus gives me a laugh.
most players in the game choose looks over blatant wealth. unfortunately picking armor and weapons becuase they are the most expensive/sought after is human nature. it happens in real life as well :P
the only thing you should worry about, is how you would like your characters to look and give opinions to friends and people who ask.
everyone has the right to play the game the way they want.

Problem is, "do you automatically assume that I automatically assume that expensive means it looks good" when you see me wearing something that you think is expensive? When I go to buy armor, I buy what I like. I dye it the way I like. I dont care what anyone else thinks about my armor choice(s), or more accurately, I care, but I am not motivated to buy a specific set of armor or dye it in a particular fashion to impress anyone beyond it simply being what it is - a style choice that I enjoy being involved in making, given we cant customize our characters enough and there really isnt much to do with gold beyond buying skins.
FoW sets used to have a status about them, but enough time has gone by that its no longer the case. My monk has more elite armor sets than she and storage can hold (given spaces on her and some in storage are needed for other things). They're spread among other characters in addition to the couple she carries that I like the most. They've all been dyed too many times to count, a number of them in some mix of black or pure black and many other combinations until I settled on something and even that changes on a whim sometimes. My other characters had numerous elite sets at one time until frustrated with armor space issues I trashed a bunch of them. Now with this said, can you guess where I spend my gold? Hint, its not on very high priced weapons usually, since thankfully most of the skins she likes are skins that I can acquire more cheaply.
Bottom line is: the game has been out long enough that tons of people have money for many armor sets and do the same thing as I do. They look good because they look good to you. Possibly some people buy armor sets thinking it gives them some sort of status, but I thought we were long past those days, and all FoW ever said back then anyway was that you accumulated some wealth. Now everybody has decent access to it and its only about what looks good to you.

Consider supply and demand. If something looks "cool", there will be in increased demand for it while the supply stays the same; thus, the price goes up. For this reason, what the majority considers to look nice has a higher price.
Relating back to your origional question, it's not that the price makes it look nice, its the nice that gives the price. Follow?

to me it dosnt "look good" what it looks is kindof scary. and that is some times the point the other thing its some times people are going for a look. imo the only good looking fow armor is the rits. all the rest of it looks like crap.
for the most part its just matter of option. yes i have the money to dye all my armor sets black but for the most part some of the armor sets look worse off if there dyed black.

Um, prestigious armor has flat price, 70k is 70k is 70k. Supply and demand? Ehh, I think not.
I don't know where everyone is getting the idea that the OP is talking about every single person wearing expensive gear. A little more time spent reading the thread instead of taking it as an attack would clear things up.
There definitely is this mob mentality that the more expensive something is, the better it is. There's no denying it when you see new people wanting to get the most expensive armor thinking it'll give them something more, perhaps higher AL?
Some people grow out of it, most don't. I don't care to own most of the armor in the game, but I do like that quirky mask. It's all a matter of preference.

I got three 15k suits. First was Luxon because when I was part of a Lux guild I wanted to "rep" (way back when Faction cam out...). Then I realized that was idiotic and got 15k Druids because it look awesome and had that until EotN when I got Norn because it looks awesome.

That on a Ranger wearing Elite Kurzick dyed white looks pretty nice actually :-D. THat's all I have to say, but all in all yes, I agree with you, but that's the same with any game where some items are more expensive than others.

The hate on the black dyed voltaic is unreasonable imo. I use it with a draconic aegis on my Paragon, try to show contrast between the black surrounded spear and the glowing silver shield. It works well with the white/black paragon armor: a good girl bad girl thing. D:

You're just assuming they do that. Most people I know think what they bought looks good, else they wouldnt have bought it.
There used to be a time back in Prophecies where FoW was sought after as a status symbol for some. Its no longer the case. There are a few skins and low req items in game that retain that sort of status symbol effect, and command very high prices. Thankfully I dont like any of them. Some people do it simply to have a goal to "complete", to get the "best" thing, which in this game is simply equatable to the most sought after skin with the lowest req. If its armor, its simply the most expensive.

You get that in any online RPG.
Only problem in GW is integrating status or e-peen with aesthetic items combined with restricted character customization.
End result:Those making changes or attiring gear for purely aesthetic motivations get lumped in with the the rest.

True.
Shame though as I love the look of chaos gloves on my main and think it looks great but often I'll switch them out purely due to peoples responses and assumption of why I got them.
As you say people can be quite nasty about such an insignificant thing.
