I think it's valid to compare Anet to Blizzard for the pure reason that so many of us play and enjoy the game because we have moved over from blizzard games. If I'd never played D2 I wouldn't have ever picked up GW. What actually drew me to the game itself was how similar in style (except for the demon part) the two games seemed to be. That's also why I played HG:L, but unfortunately that love affair didn't last too long.
Blizzard create a kind of game that we as a player base enjoy. To compete with this Anet DO need to produce something truly spectacular...D3 is definitely it's biggest competition.
I don't doubt that the wait will be worth it, but frankly the wait is causing frustration. I was so sure I'd buy it immediately, but if D3 comes out first I'll probably be drawn into it as I was with D2 and forget about any other game.

I remain hopeful about GW2, and if D3 comes out first then probably try both :P
It's easy to be sarcastic and focus on the numerous small failures, while at the same time avoiding the big picture: GW was a success in a field where most games fail hard.

GW2 > D3 > Warhammer I will be getting GW2 and D3 for sure even if they come out on the same exact day.
**Disclaimer** The above flowchart is based on my interest in the game and not the actual rating of the game because i have not played any of them and neithier have you.

News flash: Due to its popularity and the ongoing dev pool to see just how many QQs they can get on fansite forums D3 will have Ursan Blessing and perma SF.

It is quite surprising how much fun it still is to play D2, roll on D3.

Survey says...
At gamerDNA we keep track of exactly this sort of thing via XFire. People did quit Age of Conan to be sure, but they did not go to WoW. Even WoW players did not got back to WoW...
In fact 12% went to Guild Wars! See nifty usage chart
Some have commented that AoC was like methadone to WoW players, allowing them to leave and go elsewhere--preferrably to skill games.
Sadly for GW fan bois like myself Guild Wars was only their #2 destination. The number one was... guess!
hint: yelp of responsibility

Wow, that usage chart was really interesting... thanks for sharing!
I would never have picked the #1 destination for MMo fans, I'll be honest.
