Ded/Unded Minis - What's the big deal?
Okay. So I bought a Mini Mallyx unded for about 100k + 10e and sold it for about 100k + 15e.
I liked the minipet itself, so I bought a ded one for 75k. (Which according to this site is a fair price for a ded Mallyx)
But, of course, I get tired of the Mallyx within a few days. I go to sell it, asking 78k.
Nothing.
I decide maybe I should just try and break even, so I try to sell for 75k.
Nothing for almost an hour.
Then 70k.
Nothing.
I decide, maybe I could lose a few more k, so I try to sell for 65k a few days later.
Nothing for about an hour.
I decide, alright, that's it, if this doesn't work, something's wrong. So I try to sell for 60k.
Nothing, yet again. I try to tell people...this is very cheap for a ded Mallyx! But one person insists that it isn't. More than one person (probably jokingly...but I dunno) said it was worth 5k. Which can't be true.
And now, I've decided to rant here.
I've never really cared about the Hall of Monuments. It seems so pointless. People seem to think if we dedicate a few minipets and get a few sets of armor that anet is going to beat GW2 for us and give us millions of gold coins. Which...is not true...obviously. For all we know GW2 could end up being a monthly payment service, in which case Anet would want people playing as much as possible...and extreme bonuses just for buying some minipets in GW1 will make the game easier for people, for doing nothing in GW2. In which case, people beat the game faster...get bored...deactivate account...whatever.
So, when I see the people will spend 100k + 20e for an unded Mini Mallyx, but less than 60k for a ded Mini Mallyx, (1/3 of the unded price!) I can't help but call bull on all of this.
Before the HoM people bought minipets because they looked cool or were rare. Mini Mallyxs aren't THAT rare anymore...but they're still rare. They're not an annual pet...they are a very rare reward from a coffer of whispers. I usually only see mine and maybe one other mallyx in Dis1 of all the major towns.
Now the Hall of Monuments is here and people care NOTHING about how rare or cool the minipet is and just buy undedicated pets because they think that if they dedicate pets that they'll get 1000000000g in GW2 and infinite girlfriends?
It's a joke. If I'm wrong, someone please enlighten me as to why.
Cheers.

They're hoping they will get a Mallyx minipet in GW2, a game they actually plan to spend time playing. GW1 Mallyx has limited usefulness when your guild is dead and you hardly log on.

No most people who buy unded stuff because they have a ridicoulus amount of money and nothing else to spend it on. Why nt get some free bonus in GW2? They don't nessecarily expect a million gold. And GW2 has already been established as Free to play (sides initial cost). just because you can't sell your mini doesnt mean that people are stupid.

My point is...Guild Wars 2 isn't out yet. For all we know they could push it back again. Can't we actually play Guild Wars 1 ...to play Guild Wars 1? If everyone is dedicating minipets and armor...than I would hardly call it a bonus if EVERYONE has it.
I never said people were stupid either...I just find people's expectations unrealistic.

It is a bonus meaning if u dont dedicated your minis and such you wont get it so you make no sense there, gw has been out for 3 years i i think we have been playing gw for the sake of playing gw

It's not free though. You're paying 3 times a normal price for a ded mini to get an unded one.

How do you know what there expectations are?
Plus Anyone rich enought to spend money on a decently rare mini pet most of the time has alot of money, why no buy the best kind (unded) you can. And if it is ded, most rich players do not want it and most poor players cannot afford, or do not want to spend thta much money on it.
Plus people will pay what they want to pay.
And it is basically free, you are getting a bonus for no money. Assumiong you dont buy gold.

I've seen people spend there time on the HoM not because they were bored, but because they think the bonus they will get in GW2 is worth dozens of hours of their time. They obviously think they're going to get something big.

Well considering your average hard core player has 1000+(this si probally lower) hours already and enjoys the game, why not work on HoM if you already have your nice weapon set, fancy armor, and titles.
Honestly i fail to see the point of this thread, why do you care why people want to "waste" there time and money I think we already explained why, cause they want to. Who caresd if they are misguided?

I'd like to sell a Mallyx (and any other dedicated minipets I might come across) for what its worth, not what misguided people think it's worth.
It's simple, I'm ranting because I can't sell a pet. It's not complicated.

basic economics
so...the worth of anything in the game, be it mini pets or weapons, is this...
...it's worth what people are willing to pay...
simple as that.

Filling up monuments is a goal in itself, regardless of what it may mean in the future. Why? For the same reason you want to end up with stacked suits when you play solitaire: both are end results to work toward while playing a game.
The monuments are the only use I ever had (and will ever have) for minipets (and destroyer weapons, by the way). I never take them out. I buy them undedicated, dedicate them, and resell them dedicated as soon as I can, to avoid cluttering up my storage.
Dedicated and undedicated minipets are two completely different items for players like me. The former are a worthless square of inventory space, the latter are something of some value. It's pretty simple really.

I really don't know (or care) what a ded Mayllx is worth but, I saw someone standing in LA dist1 spamming a Ded Mayllx for 25K for about 30 minutes then dropped it to 20K for another 30 or so and still had not sold it when I left.
I am thinking 5k sounds about right!

This is sooooooo obvious...
This is called a market. In a market, there is supply and demand. The prices of items are in direct relation to these 2 factors. Never do prices depend on a "guid" or such things. Prices depend on how many people what a said item and at what price versus how many people are offering said item.
The gw guru guide is only an approximation of the supply and demand, and will always be.
When you purchase something, do not rely on the guide, but rather try to estimate this by yourself. Stay in the channels for a long time, check the prices other sellers are asking. Try to sell one to see what prices you are getting (to estimate the "demand").
If you do this well enough, in a span of a few days, you could arrive at a value that is much closer to the reality than the gw guru price guide.
Purchasing without doing your "home work" will eventually get you a bad trade, but you have saved yourself the hassle of waiting to analyse the market. If that is worth more or less depends on the seller/buyer.
Sell it at "whatever the market is ready to pay" and cut your losses. Move on.

Well me personally, I would not buy a dedicated mini. Why because the "Value" of the object is not in it. It is like this, The HoM is going to be used to transfer things to GW2 whatever that might be. Since you spend 75K on a item that can not be "transeferd" then it is Useless in GW2 for whatever you would get as a result of putting it in your HoM.
Example, I have a Mini Prince. I paid 25K for it a long long time ago. I still have it. I am sure that the price of that mini has gone down. I got it cause someone said that if your mini has a sword on it then it will be targeted in the underword and will take some of the damage that I would take. So I bought one and liked it and never tried to see if it was true.
I have not yet put it in my hall cause I did not know what toon that I wanted the thing to go into cause at that time there was no talk of the hall being account based so I have it sitting in my storage.
Which Brings me to my point. why would want a ded pet that I can not put in my hall other than showing it off? Oh look at my panda? or my polar bear. who cares if you have one there. When GW2 comes out everyone will want to dedicate their pets if the trade off is great enough.
I am thinking that there are going to be charr toons in GW2 so I am going to get the Gwen and the Charr mini's
I think that some of the mini's are going to sky rocket in price cause you willnot be able to find any that are not dedicated, like the prince and gewn.. as if gewn is not expensive enough as she is now.

1) You can "keep" an unded mini permanently by dedicating it and selling/deleting it, whereas a ded mini must occupy a place in your storage in order to still own.
2) Once you have one mini that you actually like, buying other minis (previously) held no purpose, because you can only display one at a time, and the others just took up storage.
3) Unded minis have an use beyond following you around, one at a time. Ded minis do not. It's really simple.
4) Rewards in a future game that you plan on playing > cosmetic rewards in a game where you've already done everything. To be crude, the black FoW / chaos gloves / ninja mask monks don't need a mini to show their wealth, but they're going back to square one in GW2, so they need a way of transferring their e-peen from this game to the next.
5) Minis were cool when they came out. Cool to own, cool to look at, cool to collect. People used to carry them around and take them out while actually playing, for fun. Now, the vast majority of minis you see, ever, are from people standing in Kamadan or LA trading. Without this other use for minis - dedication - the mini market would be utter crap right now.

that's why you don't get the difference between ded/unded.
for a lot of ppl the sole purpose of minipets is to display them in the HoM.
from this perspective ded minis are a waste of a storage space.

Except that most minipets aren't worth that much even undedicated, the the ones that are worth a lot are still vastly beyond your average player's means even when dedicated...

You just have to accept the market, unlike you the people who are looking for unded miniatures will not be interested in dedicated ones.
no-one thinks they are going to get 100000000000+ gold for filling their hall of monuments, but they'll at least get something if you're selling a dedicated mini no one is going to care about it because all it does is take up storage space, I'd consider a dedicated mini at least 10x less valuable than one you can put in your HoM.
The only problem is that you made a bad spending decision, you bought it in the first place to make 3k profit but the person who sold it to you was probably selling it outrageously high to try and hope for some one to buy it, and you were the one who did.

Hate to burst all your bubbles, but no one has ever said anything transfers into gw2. Most likely everyone will get x reward for having a full mini monument, regardless of what minis are dedicated. This is true of all the monuments imo. Why would Anet reward the 20 people who got a polar bear with something unique? They are all about catering to casual players, so this would go against what they normally have done in the past. It will be quite interesting to see when people that have all the most rare dedicated minis get the same as the guy with the 20 most cheap ones. Thats my two cents anyway.
I enjoy getting expensive minis and what not, but i seriously doubt that any of this stuff is going to transfer to gw2, and if it does it will be customized and we will all not care about it within a couple months.
