So what exactly will be going on at this chat?

The beta is some time in 2009, and Anet has said they removed it from 08 because they want the beta to be closer to release so the game is more polished and doesn't leave as much of a sour taste in anyones mouth.

So it's coming in 09 too, then.

Have you guys got sources for them saying the Beta would be in 2009? i remember them saying they were not going do the beta in 2008, instead making it closer to actual release but i dont recall them ever saying when that beta would be happening.

Yup, taken from the FAQ:

Official wiki doesnt mean Official FAQ. When i asked for a source i didnt mean a poorly worded sentence stuck on the end of an answer. DarkNecrid seemed pretty sure about it so i was hoping for something written by Anet.

I am sure of it because of average development times, how long GW1 took, the fact that they were open to the idea of beta in 08 means it is at least moving along at a reasonable rate that 2009 is most likely, that GW1 doesn't have a very good life expectancy beyond 2009, and that all signs point to 2009.

It isn't too hard to figure out these things if you have even the utmost vague understanding of how the industry works etc. They have said that they are pushing beta back to coincide with GW2's release (http://guildwars.com/products/guildwars2/gw2faq/ "Although we publically alpha- and beta-tested the original Guild Wars while it was still in early development, with Guild Wars 2 we will commence beta testing closer to the game's release.").

I will eat a shoe if the beta (and the game) doesn't come out in 2009.

EDIT:
btw, is this chat basically IRC style in the X-Fire client, or is it VOIP or what? I've never actually participated in an X-Fire chat, heh.

the chat is basically similer in style to msn.

I am not too sure on how it works but I assume, the person who makes the chat invites everyone by clicking on the clan name in the xfire window and clicking "start a new chat room" and it invites people into it (correct me if I am wrong)

This is probably going to sound pretty sad, but my mum's company designed the booth for Ubisoft . I was gutted to hear that they didn't do Arenanet's but you know...
