Do you really need a borderline offensive name?

all my characters have serious contextual names.

So far I haven't been banned for names - I don't seek problems with that anyways. If you find "Xander The Ranger" and "Brodda Buddha" offensive, there's a problem. A couple people told me they reported my paragon's name, The Xandergasm, when I was in Kamadan talking with someone, but I still have the character. I don't find it offensive, really...

However, one of my friends has the worst tastes for names; won't name any right now, but I wonder how the hell he got away with 'em... been over 2 years and I still wonder.

I partially agree with you here. As much as I don't like the Xx Xo O blablablabalab O characters... as long as they're not offending, meh. Don't really care, if they like their characters it's all that matters. And once in my team, if they can play it right.

And yet I like my names even though they're not "real-sounding". The Xandervish (obvious profession) is still one of my personal favorites 'cause of the pun, that's about all. I thought about real names for him but meh, doesn't suit me... I'm not a RPer at all, I don't care for my guy's personality and his background, I use him to kill stuff just like I use all my other characters. Why should I make him RP-sounding while I don't care? To satisfy other people's view on this game? Nope, sorry. You don't play on the character, GG. I won't go on yours and make you name it some way.

A lot of those names dont deserve bans, i saw a guy called "Seaman Stains" around in great temple which i thought was a funny name.

A guildie of mine was trying to get banned for ages before he quit, he would go into german districts and spam SIEG HEIL on characters with names like "Aids Nigg Er", also had bouts in 6v6 HA where he would make a build with 6 bonders and just grief teams to resign with 3+ hour waits while abusing them in local chat and none of that constituted a ban.

It seems that racism, anti-semetism and facism are fine aslong as you have Naruto in your name somewhere.

I understand that the roleplaying community would like people to have names like "Legolas Bravebeard" but how boring would the game be if everyone just pretended to be characters from fiction novels or wapanese porn cartoons.

Does anyone know if there is a "strike" policy? I think that if you are found to have offensive names (or are being verbally abusive) too many times you should just be perminantly banned and spare everyone else from your stupidity.

Only name of mine that could be remotely offensive is Mayor Poopenmeyer. But that's a Futurama reference, so if you have a problem with that you can RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO off.

"i saw a guy called "Seaman Stains" around in great temple which i thought was a funny name."

ok, time to fess up, myself.

Banned once, back inthe Proph-only days, for a mesmer named Seaman Staynes. (Only one of my chars to ever get a black dye in Pre-sear, less than 2 hours after making him.) I realize that name was a little outre (though less so than many names I see being used) and I got a 72 hour ban. Was actually kind of relieved - you know, you do something you think is funny but then think that maybe it wasn't a really good idea after all. So I got to rename him something I liked a lot better (and was totally innocuous).

The really funny thing, though, it that 2 years later, NF comes out and there's a quest in it called "A Sticky Operation" where you fight a bunch of corsairs identified as "Corsair Seaman".

The problem is that only English names are getting banned.

There are quite some Dutch kids walking around with dutch names that are way more offensive than most names I have seen so far in this topic. Sure, only a minority of the people can read it, but it is still annoying if you are in a group with Big Digggg and my tits are the best and more of those names.

Mine too, but it's kind of beneficial that the more immature players usually wear it on their name tag, if you think about it.

Yeah, and I know some names in polish that are even more offensive. And that was before Anet introduced polish districts. I guess some people are really strange.

I know someone who got a temporary ban for "Lookat My Boobies." The ironic thing is that he felt bad about that name long ago, but didn't want to totally remake the character. He had been asking again and again for a name change option, and finally got one when he was reported!

Hmm what about all the Korean names. They use symbols... what does ANET do about that? Just curious....

I still feel some people are way too uptight about names. I play the game and spend as little time as i can in any town. I like to complete missions and quests. It seems like alot of people spend the majority of their time just hanging around talking. Between the scrolling sales in trade and the kids fighting over who has the better armor ect ect ect, i am always happey to exit these daycare centers lol.
So for me, maybe the Charr found my name offensive and they compained.

Since i was banned, i have changed all my names to Chinese, Viet and Thai names. Lets see how well they can catch on now. Come and get me ANET ( also known as big brother )

Would be nice if they added a " change name feature "
