Character name banned, or not...
My character name got banned a few weeks ago. I've played that character for over a year with no problems, and somebody suddenly found them selves offended by it. Although I do not understand why anyone would find that particular name offensive, and although it was a bummer having to rename my third favorite char, I've accepted my fate and moved on, and all would be fine and dandy except...
Yesterday I started a new character and for funzies tried the old name, lo and behold, that banned name was available. Clearly Anet doesn't find that name offensive. My question would be, does anyone at Anet even bother to check the validity of the "offense" or do they just ban by default, because the latter would be retarded. For example I could complain that the guy playing Chuck Norris wasn't nearly awesome enough, and that I'm offended by it, and after he gets banned name my char Chuck Norris(although i'd get banned too for not being awesome enough )

A name is not added to any filter of sorts after being banned. It's just on a case-by-case ban basis. Usually if someone cries "WAHHH", the name gets banned.

It was probably *censored* who reported you. He was /reporting tons of names, as if he was some kind of internet police.

Don't make stupid names, don't do stupid things, because it makes you look stupid.
Hell, I wish I could have someone report some of my character names just so I can rename them something else a little more original.
It's not my fault Anet doesn't review the reports any further than they do. If I find it offensive in some way...oh well such is life. It's getting reported. If Anet wants to jump at it just to "save face", oh well. Talk to Anet about their 3day bans just because one person reported it. Make them change it to "change the name or you get the ban". I'll be fine with that...I just don't like my gaming experience cluttered by narutards, 1238979871 X Worrior X, X Sexy Bish X, X Spear Chucker X (yes, i saw that, and yes I reported it), and other idiotic, racist, childish names spamming the trade/local chat. Be original, be mature, and have your fun at the same time. If you feel the need to make a toilet humor/racist/idiotic name in order to have fun, go play WoW where I don't need to see it.

So if you run into that same person again or someone else finds it offensive ...yeah, you get the idea.

- Don't you find it problematic that actions are justifiable or unjustifiable based on how some person happens to feel at any particular moment? But yeah, try to find consistency in ANET's policies...

And the moral of this story is.
Don't make stupid names that you know are offensive and hope to not get banned.
If you think the name is going to get you a ban then most likely going to. Even if it goes threw anet filter because you changed one letter or whatnot doesn't mean its alright because anet let me do it you still had the intention of it being offensive.
So in short if you don't make childish names you won't get a rename or a ban its that simple.

The best i can tell, is that no one at anet really looks into why people are banned. If enough reports are filed on you, it basically auto-bans you. I got banned several times for stupid reasons, (names included), and I filed a report via email and got a reply that basically made it sound like you are guilty and don't have a chance to prove your innocence regardless of the circumstances. So some griefer that has his word filter disabled can report you for using bad language that the word filter would catch. I have no clue how they should have the right to ban you for that, but that is how it has been so do as the rest of us have and deal with it.
And yes i like using run-on sentences.

That's not the moral of the story. You've kinda missed it by a long shot.
I still don't get WHY it was banned, the name in question had no intentional misspellings of banned or otherwise offensive words, no religious, racial, national, sexual or personal connotations, no Xx's in front or back, and if after a year and over a hundred hours played, often in PUGs and no complaints I highly doubt it was(is) offensive to anyone.
An adjective and a vegetable, that's all it was, silly - yes, childish - perhaps, offensive - only if you hate vegetables, but seriously, who in their right mind would report that?

Maybe it would help if you gave the actual name?

You're not the only one. Look through at the thread called "Have you been banned with your name or whatever" and you'll notice there's bunch of people who got banned for an unoffensive name. I think someone mentioned about getting a everlasting tonic as a compensation from anet, can't really remember where it was but you might find it via search. Just remember, whenever you see
SNIP. Name removed by Messy: We don't use players names here immediately zone out. He gets like 20 people banned per day. Very scary indeed.
Btw: I never gotten banned by my name yet. Only reason why I'm arguing so much in these thread is because boredom. Har har har.

I'm intentionally leaving the name out, as I've created another character with the same name and, as seen above, there seem to be some spiteful people on this forum who would quite possibly report it again.
As I've said before it's two words, an adjective and a vegetable, feel free to imagine the most "offensive" combination of the two, whatever that could possibly be.

I have always liked the story of the Sons of the Dragon, the origin for the Dracul in mythology. A worm fed upon the corpse of a dead god turned into a great dragon and was slain. Later its teeth were planted to create men, the Sons of the Dragon, who rule by fire, destruction, and force people to be moral out of fear and subjugation. Similar to someone who would have forced mankind to be saved out of fear and subjugation, another draconic reference.
So, what then of those who seek to control the moral level of others by reporting names to get them banned. When these persons are outside the social average and use force to make others comply with their intent they are Sons of the Dragon, according to the myth: They accuse and seek justice without mercy. There is a difference between being a good example and being an assailing bully who inspires others to further detest moral value.

Did you mean worm or wyrm? Because a wyrm is a form of lesser dragon and that would make more sense to me. I've never heard of that myth myself and I was hoping to read more about it.

The mods don't like people using names to incriminate people without evidence, I suppose. Personally, I find it the more fun to point fingers and start witch hunts. I mean, who doesn't like a little noob roast? O,..,O'
Anyway, I think people need to get the sticks out of their asses and remember that this is a game, albeit a very serious game to some, it still is a game and meant to be of some enjoyment, I suppose (although, honestly, I'm wondering where the fun in this game is anymore.) If people want to make up childish, strange, immature names fine by me, and if you're American it should be fine with you as well. It's called the first god damned amendment and it gives people the freedom to say whatever the hell they want... on certain days of the week. I'm still unclear what days they are because every time I go to the mall and yell, "CHERRY CHEESE BALLS OF SPICY HOT FIRE NACHO LESBIANS!" I get kicked out. -Shrugs- They must hate cheese or something. Either way, this is a GAME and I can't think of one thing, one entire thing in the world, that you could write down in the character name slot to be offensive IN THE CONTEXT OF THE GAME. If you can, good for you, go eat a cookie and weep in the corner like a little emo bastard. Toughen up or get the hell out of my country.
/patrotistic-crap
-Cough- Anyway, there are some douches in game that will report you just to be douches. Sorry, they exist. No, I can't do anything about it (that I'm allowed you tell you about >,..,>). And, yes, Anet fails on so many levels when it comes to community relations that I don't even bother to contact them anymore, I just put my head in the over for a few minutes to remember what it's like to deal with them. Oh, and, Lubed Cucumber, would that be the adjective vegetable combo? Because that's about the only thing I could come up with remotely 'offensive', even though I find it funny and slightly arousing. O,..,O'''

Fact: If a character is reported enough times for "inappropriate name", then that character will be banned for having an inappropriate name.

Because while the majority of the GW population remain ignorant or in the dark, the mods know the above mentioned fact.

Harry or Hairy Cucumber
Manly Carrot
Big, Large (anything describing a large size) Carrot or Cucumber
Globes of Lettuce
I can think of other ones. These aren't verifiable character names but examples of things that would be of sexual suggestion while also seeming innocent. Take it for what you will but yeah. I'm sure I could think of many others but I think the point is made.

If your point is that names like those should be banned, I have to most vehemently disagree. What people infer from non-offensive words is their problem, not the problem of words themselves.
