1. Don't think you are better than all of your people. That's what turns people into dictators.
2. Listen to your officers.
3. Don't choose just anyone to be an officer. You have to trust them, if you don't, he's not a good officer.
4. Don't start a Guild without at least 3 other people.
5. Talk with people, try organize events, lead them.
6. Did I mention don't insult people? I know some people (like me) like that, but really, people don't like it.

There are other threads like this but only one I could dig up.
I agree with the points Abedeus made with a couple of additions:
Decide a guild focus/goal to start with - if PvP what kind, if PvE what kind? If you're doing widespread of either then consider yourself a social guild and gear up as such. This will allow you to target your recruitment appropriately, so people are clear what the aim of the guild is and if they want to join - this will waste less of their time and yours. Connect with your new guild members and they'll be less likely to leave.

Also dont think of it as YOUR guild. Yes you may be able to kick everyone out disband w/e but you need to think of it as the guilds guild not yours. My alliance leader thinks that way. Hell she even has Queen in ever chares name used to be in guild but formed my own because I dont like that mentality.

How to be a good guild leader rule 1: Get a gold cape and then sell it for $800 without telling anyone.
Guild leader role complete.
(Tip: This works better if you're mexican!)

Before going on a recruiting spree, decide what you want your guild to be about (PvE, PvP, etc), what you're looking for in guild members, and what guidelines & requirements you want your guild members to follow (age limit, participation in guild activities, being active etc.)
Having TS or Vent for your guild is a huge plus, especially for social guilds and high-end farming guilds (a must for PvP).
Don't offer free stuff to recruits - there are tons of people out there who hop from guild to guild just to get hand-outs.
Don't make just anyone an officer. Be sure that potential officers can be trusted and are worthy of the position. A good officer candidate won't mind waiting a few months for that promotion.
Treat your guildies well - be ready to help anyone at any time, don't play favorites, and don't be afraid to set your members straight when they're not abiding by the rules (guidelines, requirements, code of conduct, or whatever you wanna call it) that you should have explained when you recruited them.
If the best thing you have to offer is a "cool cape" then don't bother!
