Dear ArenaNet: Is this legal?
The good old question before every GvG match is - 206 or 216?!
This, of course, refers to whether the server is European or American (an IP of 206.*.*.* is European, an IP of 216.*.*.* is American), granting a large advantage to whichever team gets their territory's server (Americans get 400+ ping on European servers, and vice versa, making 3/4s and 1s interrupts near impossible).
Though, ArenaNet doesn't acknowledge this as part of the game.
Though, we all know how the server is determined - before you enter the match, the "average ping" of all players is calculated, and the server with the lowest "average ping" is the one you play on.
So, if I had a program that made my computer lag to, say, 8000 ping on every server of 206.*.*.*, thereby throwing off the "average ping", and forcing matches to be played on my home servers, would this be legal?
I hope you say "no", or else the future of GvG is "whoever can lag themselves more before entering the match without actually erroring out".

So - if a team opened up lots of media connections and started downloading anything while waiting for a match - this would slow down the internet connection for all of them -and so they would get a server advantage?
Close down the extra net connections as soon as you start - and presto - no lag.
Cant see how that could be policed by anyone - so doubt it's illegal.
But.......interesting!!!!
if anyone tests this out please post back.

It wouldn't work exactly like that. I Imagine servers are decided by each player pinging all servers and the server which got the lowest average ping is the one that holds the game. Just lagging yourself wouldn't do much because it would increase your pings all around the board which wouldn't change much. You'd need to specifically lag yourself on the particular servers you do not want to play on so that your ping is normal on your servers but horrendous on others which is hopefully enough to bring the average pings in your favour.

This isn't really a "cheat" as it is just abusing the weaknesses of the internet and online gaming. Your still playing the same game, just playing on servers that benefit you. I'd probably classify it as more of an exploit.

Yes, because you're SUCH an important member of the GvG community and this will totally ruin your guilds rating.
Oh wait.

If players have to go to the extent to do this in order to win, they should probably work on other aspects of GvG....like learning how to play.
If this happens in high level GvG, then I suppose it could become an issue, but then it'd only be total scrubs trying it anyway.

i didn't know that's how servers are picked, interesting. i had always just assumed the euro servers took priority because i don't think i've ever played a match against euros on the american servers.
shouldn't be "legal", but i don't think anet could do anything about it even if they wanted to.

Funny, because every time my guild GvGed, we always were playing on either Asian or American servers.

Just wondering if the servers choices are depending on the average ping on each server, how could you then get bad ping on american servers and good ping on Euros? I would think if u do download shitloadz and get horrible ping it would be the same on booth the servers, how would u fix that u only get lagg on american servers and not european=)?
Also Gg lutz vs rawr^^

Well, you can not fail at the interwebz, and use a program?
Heck, most routers ALREADY have such a program build in, were you can manually set a certain download/upload limit for certain connection (specific programs).
This can not be counted as a 3Th party program as it doesn't directly interfere with GW, but rather with your connection. If this would be concidered an exploit, then ANY person connection to the internet is concidered an exploiter, because some people naturally have a slow/fast connection.
Anyway, I forgot the name of the program, but I've used it before in conjuction with GW, and it works like a charm, you can easily DC yourself, aswell as maintain a 1.5 kb/s upload/download stream (Which is what I needed to get a ping of 80K, yet not DC, any slower would DC me in an outpost, any more would be a waste)
Anyways, lolGW

This. If this created any sort of major, game changing advantage (and is actually worth the effort + possible) people would have been doing this a long time ago.

Just force everyone to play on Korean servers, except the Koreans. Make them play on South African servers.
That way everyone has shitty lag!

That's actually a fairly trivial thing to do.
Relying on the user's connection to tell you ping times like that is kind of silly. The user's connection is a 100% untrusted resource because the user has absolute control over it and the remote server has none. I should hope that they don't actually do this to assign servers.
