I kinda like that most people in the game lack personal taste. It's fun to stand out among everyone in either FoW or PvP skins with something that's actually stylish and original.
People in AB asked what armor my mesmer is wearing several times and it's... 1.5k sunspear, dyed black. Odd how nobody knows what basic skins look like.
I only have one set of FoW, female necro, because I like how it looks, and as far as expensive weapons go, I don't think I have any that are really high-end. Unless eternal bow/amethyst aegis counts. Neither is over 100k, so I don't think you'd label them as "desirable". I do have a crystalline, but I realize the thing is about as ugly as a wammo in a ninja mask, so I pull it out only to flex my e-peen. :P
lol this game in it objective one is to have the good looks. this game it is not WoW. in wow objective one is to have the powerful gear. but guild wars, even the n00bs can be getting maximum armor! this is fundamental flaw with gild wars is my opinion. since only having get the max armor make look like all the other n00bs in game, players who are not n00bs must be having good looks for to let everyone know who is alpha male. example is, fiery dragon sword. all noobs must get this skin because it is having big firey looks, they say in their brain "this sword, if i am having it people will be thinking, i am rich high class person and, skills at playing gild wars" because this happens, so many n00b has firey dragon sword. but the true skills player, he says in his brain "i see this obsidian edge sword, and it is being very good looks. it is very rare also. so if i am having one people will know who is alpha male - they know that this alpha male is me. but it is different from the firey dragon sword weapon because it is costing very much ectos. but because i am skills at playing gild wars i have in my xunlai box very much ectos for to buy these things."
and that is why 6 million ppl and only several desissireable weapon skins.
You listed epeen items, not desirable items. There are a lot of nice looking weapon skins that nobody wants.
The only weapons that really have been shafted are spears and scythes, which really don't have that many variations (because they have been in fewer games, so therefore there are just fewer skins).
Most of the Skins the OP posted I don't even like...
I like simple skins such as:
Hand Axe
Villnar's Glove(Green Curses Offhand, labeled Grim Cesta as a normal item)
Holy Staff
Hand of the Forgotten(Grim Scythe)
Deldrimor Scythe
Sai
Golden Talons
Air Staff(Canthan Skin)

I think the OP was talking about high "value" skins (ones that go for 100k+). This is not a subjective thing - it's easy enough to see what skins go for a lot of money.
Just to make it clear for you and those who would not have understood: yes "value" as such is subjective, even if the OP meant "virtual money value" which is a completely different thing. Many people enjoy GW as a game, not as a virtual market or a substitute for trading, or not even for a fashion show. You can enjoy these expensive skins of course! But there's no fundamental reason why people should, it's a matter of taste and as such a subjective opinion.
As can be seen from above posts, a certain number of people don't like these expensive skins and prefer a lot of others, not so expensive ones. They fetch a high price due to 1) how "rare" they are, which has nothing to do with their "value" in the intrinsic sense; 2) how much money people who want "rare stuff" are willing to pay (the silliest part of the equation); 3) the hype created ty talking about them and creating a urban myth ("I hear BDS is good").
Part of me would like to see another Design-A-Weapon contest, but a bigger part of me wants them to work on features (not more skins), and all of me doesn't giving a flying **** about GW2.
I wanted a Clockwork Scythe so I farmed Rragar dungeon and I got a Req. 9 Dryad bow and after equipping on my ranger I still can't figure out what all the big deal is about - to me it is decent looking but not drop dead gorgeous. I now farm Oola's dungeon.
Couldn't agree more with most opinions here - items are worth what people are prepared to pay for, based upon it rareness/looks. But the majority of GW players I would say aren't really that fussed with having to wield a set of Voltaic Spear/Tormented Shield, then switch to Eternal Blade/Celestial Shield.... spamming them in team chat to say "look how small my **** is". And armour sets, meh, who cares that a player is wearing a set of FoW armour. Everyone has their own tastes, it doesn't need to be thrust in the faces of 7 other people.
And man, oh for some new content. Designer weapons, armour sets, areas - whatever, would be nice to have something a little different to tide us over with until GW2 in 2032... we are getting increased storage space though, so praise be (/sarcasm).
It is a game - just because someone comes pimped out in Daddy's best Credit Card-obtained kit doesn't make them a better player, usually quite the opposite (note "usually", there are exceptions). Given a choice between a player with starter-ish armour/weps or a pimped out showboater, the starter will win for me anyday.
Skins get boring no matter what. The only way somewhat around it is make the game moddable which wouldn't happen I think because of the closed system of their online network, or the other thing which is to make customizable weapons and armor.
Now I think customizable weapons and armor would be a blast, and when you think about it it's almost a shame they did that for character body and cape, the 2 things you actually see or care about the least, and not for armor and items, the things you see the most. I'd honestly prefer in GW2 you just have a generic head but could get the craziest items as you create their total appearance. City of Heroes/Villians seems to show that yes these games could allow for a ton of user creativity if the dev programs them the right way.
we all need to go back to Sorrows furnace greens as prestige weps
Ah, the good old days. *weeps nostalgically*
Anyway, while desirable weps (which uh...are arguable...) are indeed out there and rare...
...you don't need 'em. They give you something to work for. Keep ya playing the game and opening the z-chest and crawling through dungeons.
I had my account for over a year before I had enough money for a purple storm bow for my ranger.
Another six months before I could buy a Req 10 gold one (Which I still have, and use...)
Then I learned about farming. And learned that I hated painfully repetitive actions.
So, me and the Undead Flatbow from the BMP, my req 10 storm bow, my Green Icebreaker, my old, old, old Rotwing, my Flamberges and Totem Axes, Round Shields well modded and Bone Staff after Bone Staff...we say hi.
I'm a little saddened about the design-a-weapon contest winners-- they're lovely to look at, and painfully hard to obtain. Next time, I vote to see those drop from any old locked chest in HM, in any region. Paying mad lewt for sticks and snakes and skeletons... bummer.
Anyway, I think there are some cheap skins that look at least as good as the "rare" or desirable ones that the OP suggested:
I'm a fan of...
Undead bows from BMP
Flamberge
Vertebreaker
The Mindclouder
The Fuschia Staff
The Rotwing bow
Halo and Dragoncrest axes
Gothic and Gothic Dual axes
the IDS
Wyvern Blade
Igneous Blade
Oaken Aegis
Bramble Bows.
Just nice-looking, generally interesting skins. Undead stuff from the BMP in general, I think, is quite good-looking, if you favor the dark weapons, and Tengu weps are gorgeous and delicate.
WHAT DOES HAVING ANY WEAPON WORTH 100k+ HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH DESIRABILITY?!!!!
People who are after the expensive items in-game don't really care what it looks like. People who are after good looking items (subjective) don't care how much it's worth.
Besides the fact that this topic is completely opinionated, as weapons became more available they became less desirable. Think back on the SF and ToPK skins. They used to be in huge demand, but then as the game got older and these items were more easily obtain they naturally fell into the back drop. As newer skins were released they were forgotten even more. How many players do you see wanting a Victo's Blade these days? From what I've seen not many.
Yes, new skins would be nice. Is it going to happen? No.
Meh, I've been happy with my Tengu Shield and Green Endgame Spear ( One from Nightfall, can't remember which one) on my Paragon for a long time. I have also been happy with my 1.5k Luxon armor on my necromancer with a Mursaat staff for a long time as well (although that 1.5k was a bit more than 1.5k).
I could continue with what all of my characters use, only to make everyone realize that people have individual tastes, but that won't change anyones mind, so why am I even posting?
If people hate that theres not enough Skins in the game why dont they download Texmod and make there fking own... It aint that hard ya know...
This isn't about the number of skins or how good they look, this is about how many sell for over 100k! Clearly a crucial indicator of game quality. I personally would not play a game with less than 50 high-cost skins.
I like the challenge of obtaining the skins myself. I've been playing since July2005 and I need challenges like that. Been doing runs for Silverwings lately. Been fun and finally got one. Now it's time for the Rragars one.
Personal Taste ought to rule your purchases or acquisitions in GW (perhaps in RL too!).... please don't blame Anet for the amount or lack of "rare" skins in game....
it's all just epeen anyways, which is really no more cool than a prepubescent temper tantrum is.
