Grats! Enjoy your mini beetle
How many echo's and srb's did you need to make that score?
|
well i got like no.60 for top 100 daily, but needed like a 479.8 for top 100 that gives mini. sad part is that 477.531 run was bad for me because i made changes later on to get to the first gate in 16-17 seconds and the water boxes at 38 which is 2 seconds faster than what i did that run plus i used my 2nd super a tad too soon. probably could have scored a 480 or high 479 , but never got the combo the rest of the night without having a bad start .
btw only takes 1 echo+ super to get those times.

exactly how I feel, except I kept having rollbacks when I was in a potential top100 race
rollerbeetle racing with an orange ping is not that fun

the problem is that harden shell lasts 4 seconds, and there are always people to ram before 5 seconds, and others who ram 5 seconds later
if both are in your line, either you're screwed, or you have to change your line and waste some time
didn't get a mini this year, I was a little less than a second away from it (not satisfied at all by my record race), I was unable to adapt to how other racers use their skills in the first part

I don't think it was possible to adapt, you'd have players ram-ing at the start line, and about 4 other positions before the first gate. It was the difference between a "good" race and a bad one, where you have everyone slowing down the same person (me), although it seemed there was a very annoying autotargetting system (which meant that sometimes I wasn't targetting the leader of the race anymore).
Surprisingly this year, very few ragers and only one angry 2nd place calling me n00b. Very enjoyable overall. I think I may have made it to r4 gamer if I played the whole week-end.
Off-topic: any1 knows if someone maxed Gamer?

saw a few r8 gamers, dunno about max
I think that to have more "luck" with other competitors, you need to start racing earlier than I did, the average daily records on Monday were much lower than those on Saturday, and it was much harder to get a good start on Monday than it was on Sunday (when I got my 479)
anyway, already had a beetle since the first year, so I'll just stick to xth for free cash

Fril/Bug John, do not forget that there are people who enjoy the PVP BATTLE portion of this game also, KD does not always=Noob. I have two accounts both with R4 gamer(halfway to r5 on one) the majority of points from RR and not one GL. For some people to assume that the only reason/goal of this game is the best time/mini would be incorrect and applying their play style and goal to everyone in the game. Everyone plays for different reasons and should not be labeled because they enjoy the game in a different way or compete for a different reward. You may find you enjoy the battle portion just as much as the speed aspect once you embrace KD it can be alot of fun, this may be the case already, but is hard to tell from your posts.
You can earn a pile of Lunar/victory tokens from rollerbeetle racing. Being a PVP Battle you can directly affect how many of those you get. Alot of people want to play without KD. Some people use KD to get a better place and more tokens/gamer points. There is alot of stragety involved, not just the speed of the beetle. Shooting a leader can enable others to catch/shoot him thereby giving you a better chance to pass them all(basic example). When you see a top 100 person in a battle he is instantly the #1 priority target to shoot/beat.
Some of the best games were the ones with many lead changes and outstanding uses of offense and defenses at the perfect time. One game had a guy used multiple lunges keeping me from using the any skills on the last leg of the run. He zipped right past me, awesome use of timing and skills he was given to work with, to come in first place. He did not just rely on speed to win. Been in some terrific battles for third place not only fighting for position, but to finish before the countdown clock hit zero.
In another post I recommended making a Race only version of this game, that way the Racers can zip around and not namecall anytime KD is used. This attitude sometimes makes me go out of my way to shoot people just to hear them complain. It is such a predictable reaction that I have a set response typed in.
On a different note: Lag, one thing players can try is to turn your graphics to the lowest settings. My experience has been much better with graphics on Low. InsightBB highspeed connection also(10meg), but I can see a big difference when graphics are cranked up and have more instances of rubberbanding even with high speed connection.
Congrats to all the mini winners. Managed to get 7 Celestial oxen from fortunes purchased with the tokens from rollerbeetle winnings

So by giving out the greased lightning every years on the event. Wouldn't it affect the price on them say if we keep getting them for 5 or more years straight? (5 times 100= 500 in existence)
Also congrat to all those who reached top 100!

I'd never consider them n00b, but just annoying. I never, ever said anything. Actually one of the most memorable beetle race I had was on Monday, among the last ones. It was very close and until the penultimate gate we were 4 still running at short distance from each other, the leader changed constantly and it was, indeed, fun.
As you said, there's this inherent "tension" between battling and racing, which means racers only have a small chance of succeeding.
Just to mention it, in one game, there was a player I played with before (X Son of Mephisto X) and seeing as I was ahead of everyone with an SRB on the first puddle, he said "Go Fril, I'll kd them!".

Will try it for Dragon Festival (although my 8800gt should handle it well, but maybe minimising graphics requirements can improve your processing by the server?), as well as the TCPack trick in windows registry to get faster connection to the server.

Not a computer genius here, but is it a function of less interaction between my computer and the server? Is the game server or my computer sending more packets back and forth if my graphics are cranked up? I will still band occassionally but not as bad if I am on high graphics. Could all be in my head. NVIDIA 6800GT myself, still trying to convince the wife for the new computers but she has the kitty ...and we need to redo our shower.
I use DRTCP to maximize my connection speed this may help some.
BTW I love the laughing man avatar!

No, from all we know, it doesn't matter because the rendering is only done on the client-side (your computer). The packets exchanged between server and clients are mostly "instructions" (move this guy over here, put this number over there), so it shouldn't change too much, but maybe it does because of the way rollerbeetle race is managed? I've never, ever seen so much consistent rubberbanding in the whole of GW...
Can't find the TCPack trick on Guru.

what the random rammers don't realize is that if they used ram correctly (as a speed boost with special characteristics), they'd be much faster
actually, even with loads of kd and annoyance I'm still faster than anyone who uses his skills randomly (unless he gets more than 2 srb), and I'm far away from the best racers here in terms of keeping high speed all along the track
if people want to compete, that's perfectly fine with me, that's what rbr was created for, but getting kd everywhere by players that have no clue what they're doing, that's just pissing me off
haven't you seen many players ramming each other at the start without even making their speed go up a little before ? maybe my definition of competition isn't the same as yours, but I just call it stupidity
after lots of runs screwed by lag (it's not always that good to live in the countryside ), by my own lack of skill, and by players who don't understand how their skills work (most of the time, in the first part), I don't have enough tolerance left not to call them stupid

there were only 138 given out in 2007 and 2008, and the prices are already going down (900/1000 ectos a few months ago to 550/600 now)
maybe they'll go up again in a few months, but we'll certainly see another decrease next year

I hear you on the start of the race, always hope for an end pen to start, it is so predictable that I plan for it, always catch them on the first checkpoint(since I save my skills), those behaviors are exploitable for my style of play. They almost to a person immediately activate the recharged skill at the checkpoint.
For the middle pens I wait for them all to go nuts out of the gate and make my way out. Always watch for the players who do not shoot out the gate they are likely to have more exp with the game. Syncing with buddies is probably your best bet to ensure you do not have a crazy ramfest at the start and every checkpoint.
Note to all: ANET stated that synching is allowed. Do not flame me.
I still like the idea of having two types of RR one for racing, one for battling, could have some more enviromental skills replace the KDs:
1. Glide through water at the same speed as on land.
2. Jump fences/small water obstacles.
3. Remove KD from ram and call it Boost.
4. Maintain/extend current RMP speed for 3 seconds
These would replace ram, rocks, blast and harden shell (since it would have no use in a race only environment). Would add a new dimension to the race. Glide plus SB would be nasty. Jump a damn cow or the fence or any number of small ponds.
As for Lag, maybe ANET could run the game during a NON festival type weekend. To see if the lag is still so bad, everyone shows up for the special festival weekends.
Fril,
So you probably know as I do those battles where you're kd'd and ram'd twice each before the second gate ;/ Grrrrrrrrrrrrr
Right before the second checkpoint/gate is rough save my harden shell for that stretch.

Crazy.

Classic gamble for resurrection run. Spend the first super and pray. Super from the cows or echo from cows/super in water will bail you out. Dual super is good for a couple of bonus seconds.
To those of you that complain about Ram at start - Yuri's start isn't the only way to do business. A proper Ram start costs a second at worst but eliminates pretty much all risk of an early KD. It also gets you in front so that you can block the player using Yuri's start at the first checkpoint (lagging your competitor). The catch is that you can't just be on autopilot; you have to watch radar and everyone else's start to figure out when you need to Shield and Dash. Also, a Yuri start can KD you on the hill with the initial Ram if the player has a much faster gate than you (say, Red to your Purple).
The trouble with the minigame is that only one person can reach the boxes in a decent time because of latency. You have to do unto others before they do unto you...but if you get half of the combo from the first box, you're vulnerable. As a result, it is EXTREMELY advantageous to lead the race going into the first box so that you don't have to worry about a Ram taking you out between the first and second checkpoints.
The earlier that you seize that lead, the easier it is to maintain.
EDIT: Syncing is horribly inefficient. More runs = more chances. If you want to sync, it's your own business...but it's just flat out stupid in RBR. Learn to defend yourself better at the start and save syncing for randomly paired team games (RA, Snowball, Dragon Arena, Costume Brawl).

Don't blame you if I get shot. That's your job. If I get shot, I screwed up.
Shayne owned me in the face at the end of one match by sitting on a Blast and triggering it right before I put up my Shield to double Ram the last hill. He then somehow managed to Shield my retaliatory Ram. Easily the most memorable match of the weekend. I found myself saying...WTF? Who doesn't spend a Blast on the beach after the spiral?!?!?

This is why I often change my starting strategy depending on where I start. At some gates it's just better to start out with Ram because the chance for a clean start when you hold out your ram is very slim there. At least for me it is.

I never understood all the hassle about syncing anyway, if you really want to sync then do it with just one friend of yours and not a whole group. That shouldn't have to make your runs go any slower at all, and it helps a lot knowing you have at least one friend there with you in the race. It doesn't always work though, I tried it a couple times with a friend of mine and most of the times we didn't even join the same race. I think it happened more that we just accidentily bumped into each other. All in all it's probably best to just make a lot of friends during your races.

Probably would have been good to ask this before the event but could anyone give me some tips (for next time) on powerup strategies?
1. Best spots to use your checkpoint ram and dash
2. Best spots to use SRB
3. If you can't echo SRB is it better to echo dash or ram?
I really tried to learn the finer points of racing this year but couldn't break 475. Thought I had one top 100 run for sure but some fag blasted me right after I used dash on the big hill climb before the beach, even though he had no hope of catching up.
