Guild Wars 2 = Duke Nukem Forever?
Do you think Guild Wars 2 is becoming the next Duke Nukem Forever? DNF was a game hyperhyped by its devs , always had delays then finally 3D (the studio) shut down, taking DNF with it.
The making of it began in 1998 and ended up taking, ironicly, forever to come up.
What if Gw2 suffers from the same fate?
DNF's devs were always saying "yeah the game is coming out soon, huge improvements, we're working on it hard.
Which is what GW's devs are saying too.
Your thoughts? (sry for my bad english)

Yes, there will be no GW2 and we should all abandon hope as of this moment. Thank you for this astonishing new insight.

Not at all. Anet has put in too much time and effort for them to abandon it. They keep on pushing it back because they only want to release a game when it is ready to meet the standards of the people who will play it.
But I like the reference .

I don't know really. I doubt AnenaNet would suffer the same fate as they have guildwars making them money by the minute with micro transactions and new people buying the game, people buying 2nd accounts etc etc.
Btw personally I wouldn't care if GW2 Suffers the same fate. Sure, people who grinded for accomplishments for the HoM specifically for GW2 would be very angry. But think about that for a minute. How the hell would you be able to transfer your accomplishments to GW2 anyway? Unless GW2 uses your same acctname and pass and all you need to do is buy an account key to add the availability of GW2 Gameplay to your GW2 Account...Or some kind of code system...
But the reason I wouldn't care particularly is because I see so much life left in this current game to just work on gw2, someday release it and just leave GW1 with 3 games and an expansion. And before you tell me it's hard work to keep adding onto a game. Take a look at SOE's EverQuest from 1998. Several expansions were made over the years and STILL being released to this day for EverQuest and their game EverQuest II has been out since 2004. ArenaNet should learn well from them honestly. Don't go and abandon GW1 when/if GW2 comes out.
GW2 was announced in 2007 with EoTN. They said expect a beta in 2008. Expect a release in 2010. With 2009 already half burned out and not one screenshot of GW2, not even with all the opportunities they has to show GW2 I don't expect it for a few more years if not at all. I wonder if the Worlds.com lawsuit hurt them really bad?

No, they are working on the game, it isn't going to be like DNF.
My main reason for saying this is because rumours have been going around that the company is expanding and that Voice actors have been hired to lend voices to the game. This usually doesn't happen until the game is near completion.
Additionally the GW brand is still being developed, just recently the GW book, GuildWars: The Fall of Ascalon, was unveiled comic-con. And Matt Forbeck said the book may be out next February.
I know I don't have concrete proof but I know how hard it is to make a game and I will give the developers the benefit of the doubt until they give me a reason to doubt them. Which I will be if they don't give out more info this year
Both Regina and Martin have said there will be more info this year and Martin has offered to be our whipping boy if they don't.
so my suggestion is to don't sweat, sit tight, and see what develops the rest of the year.

Uhh wrong. You can't push back a release date for a game that hasn't even been given a release date to begin with.
Also what a stupid thread...Just because this has happened to a few games in the long existance of video games, why would you suddenly jump to the conlusion that's it's going to be vaporware.
NC Soft is doing well as a company, they're not in financial troubles, so in purely business terms it would be an absolutely astronomical disaster for their credibility if they were to announce a game as big as this and not carry it through.
To try and assume this just because we haven't heard any information is simply rediculous, I knew some people on this forum weren't exactly the...uhh..brightest bunch but seriously, all you have to do is think about it for like 5 seconds to see your assumption is completely unfounded cynicism.

I am still going to wait until the end of the year before I decide to say that it is going to be like DN:F.
It has only been two years and instead of pandering to the masses like the other developer did, and waste time with fake trailers and screens, they have been working in silence and only spoke to tell us that there will be a delay.
Delays are common in ANY project, and it is very normal for problems to arise, that does not automatically make it a dead project.
The brand is being developed, the presence at Comic-Con and the news about the book shows that. I, myself think that there will be something at PAX because Regina and Martin hasn't come out and said there won't be anything.
Call it optimism

It will not. Martin has guaranteed info by the end of the year.

All this guarantees is that we will in fact be pointing fingers and yelling at Martin.

Surely you realize that even the specific comparison here, DNF had a team of up to 30+ people at some points being paid to work on the game for over 10 years?

gw devs never say that. they never say anything about gw2 and we already know the games not coming out soon since they need to release the books first which wont come out for a LONG time

the main reason as I see it why DN:F never got anywhere is because 3D Realms used one engine, used another engine, worked on other projects, made fake screens and trailers, and had entire restructuring of its developers.... Something that ANET hasn't done, they have kept with an updated version of its own engine, put its main focus on GW2 and not in making trailers, and has had its internal structure remain intact for the most part
3D Realms does not = ArenaNet

3D realms practically perpetuated a hoax in order to get money from Take Two.
NCSoft is NOT Take 2. They recently promoted Jeff Strain, so unless one of the biggest MMORPG publishers just got really stupid, they know that work on GW2 is being done.
Secrecy and "it's done when it's done" mentality is nothing new. Blizzard does it all the time, with some success, I might add.
Bottom line: 10 years from now, if there's no GW2, then you can start making comparisons to Duke Nukum Forever.
EDIT: Dakka Dakka beat me to it. Love your avatar and screen name, BTW.

Long time? nope, not really since Simon and Schuster, the publisher lists that the book is coming out Febuary 23rd 2010. And they don't need to release the book before they release info on the game, sure they can't talk lore that happens in the book but they can talk classes, skills, creatures and lore they have already talked about in "the movement of the world".
and thanks, not many know the reference to my name and avatar

I'm as impatient for GW2 news as anyone else here, but this correllation is totally off-base. The particulars I know quite well, as I'm a huge DN3D fan (I created some of the highest-rated fan maps ever) (and DN3D started my love of PC gaming), but there are well-documented disasters that befell id, whereas ArenaNet is following a pretty predictable pattern of MMO devs.
