I'd don't know that I call it a fad. I've never been told to get a life in game. But given your propensity for certain activities on this forum, (see: your guild information) I can see why you might experience this more than the "average" person.

Heh.

I've shrugged it off all the time ingame, just making witty responses for lulz, but I made this thread to question the new fad of telling people to get a life; I care because it's become a fad.
But you might as well be worried about someone calling you a 'noob'. I'm of the opinion that 'get a life' is about, well, tantamount to that. It's an easy-to-sling, off-the-cuff insult that basically translates to 'I don't like what you're doing'. (Now, if someone started out by breaking into Avenue Q's There Is Life Outside Your Apartment song and dance routine, I'd be a bit more concerned.)

I'm willing to bet the people who shriek "GET A LIFE" really, really don't recognise the irony of what they're saying, too. All in all, it's just a variation on something that was already happening. It's not as if people just suddenly started shouting insults at each other - trashtalking and insulting and whatnot have all been going on for a really long time.

Errr... the point of this thread is OP's getting disturbed by these remarks? Honestly I see no reason to be bothered by these remarks since the worse of human nature cannot be shown by words alone... I got a new phrase for you: "Get a move on".

Now now. There are times when I'm intentionally an asshole. But there are times when I also tell the honest truth. I can't say I'm not innocent... This time

No. I'm questioning the context of usage why people say that if you're not satisfied with a group.

There's nothing to worry about. Some ppl game because of the fun, some game to get away from stuff, some for both. Then you have those who are in an insecure period of life, and need distance from people.

There's also the fact that some ppl are generally evil and some are good.

Because clearly if you had a life you'd be content to party with bad players with terrible bars because you'd realise it's just a game, and therefore failure is acceptable and striving for the best possible build is a waste of perfectly good dying and failing time?

Simply because your daring to challenge them and dare to actually know something about the game. didn't you know, if you know anything about a game then your just a nolife nerd geek looser who needs to be told to "Get a life!".

Seriously, people these days have a short attention span (notice how games have gone from the "time played" selling point going from 100+ hours down to 20 hours or so?).. who read 1 or 2 "guides" on how to play, what skill setup to use, etc and then go with it... or don't even bother to take the time to read the skills, read guides, learn how to actually play the game and just do whatever...

And then if anyone actually dares to try and "help" them... they won't accept that.. because it means that they might actually have to "think" about things and might actually "learn" something... your challenging their right to just "play" the game and to hell with actually playing well or smart or anything (that's too much effort!)

so of course.. moment you challenge em. you've shown that your a nerd geek looser who obviously has no life since you actually bothered to read the game manual, know what the skills can do .. and *gasp* can actually plan a group composition and skill build competently...

Which leaves em with only one recourse.. to tell you.. "Get a life!"

I wonder why people use a broad insult to annoy people over the internet to get a reaction....

Hmm

It's a tough one, I better meditate on this.

For some reason many people don't react well to being told: "you're doing it wrong, let me tell you how to do it" without having asked for advice. Go figure!

Actually, while reading your thread just now, I went to RA. Suddenly one person in our team decide our team would suck and told us to resign. Of course he thought he was hot shit because he had obby with chaos gloves.

Anyway, no one resigned, and we finished the match and lost. After we lost he told us to "Get a life".

Lol, kind of weird, just read this thread ^^.

Anyway, most people on the internet are idiots. Live with it.

Perhaps they don't understand the context? I mean "get a life" could be the new "fail" or "lolgw".

What is so bad with actually getting a life, even the developers said "you guys play REALLY much" .
Just type "/age" in game , and come back here to start a thread on something random like squeaking bra' s.

It helps.

Whenever anybody says stuff about "you need to get laid" or "you need a life" I know they are just a kid. Because only a teenager thinks sex is the only thing important in life.

It is a very funny insult really. Basically, they are admitting that they are bad at the game and you are better then them. If you think about it.

i usually never get those messages and pug a lot. if i do get that message, i usually reply with "gw is my life" or "can i have yours?". for reals though, its a game and you shouldn't stress so much over it--there is a certain threshold of having crap players before you fail the mission, so try to stop thinking about what is "best" but rather what is "acceptable".

'Get a life' ranks up there with people calling other people 'noob' (which I've already been called twice on the boards today, go me. roflmao). Usually the first person to start calling names is simply trying to fend off their own insecurity, unhappiness; thus they take it out on everyone else. However, in some instances, some people just like to argue and fight (guilty!).

In the first case, it's pointless to let it bother you, and even more pointless to say anything back because they don't listen and won't see reason.

In the second instance, playing along and arguing right back can be relatively entertaining. Amazingly this is how most of the lasting friendships I've established in game have come about.

As for the issue of the ignore list, it's there to be used. If you just don't feel like getting into it with someone, just ignore them - literally or figuratively, personal choice. It should drive home the point, although in some cases it doesn't and you need to keep that person on permanent iggy. I rarely actually put someone on the physical ignore list. Currently I have 1 person on mine, from a very bad RA match and anytime I remove them they always have smart ass comment to to make, so I simply don't remove that person anymore.

I have to admit that I don't understand the "get a life" rant in these cases, but I can see from your "I know how to play better than you" comments why you get it a lot.
