eotn didn't appear until end of august 2007, 10 months after nightfall and 4 months after utopia was due in april 2007.
eotn certainly doesn't have the same amount of content as a regular campaign, so what exactly happend in those extra 4 months, and in the overall 10 month development of utopia/eotn?
anet themselves were working to a schedule of 6 months between campaigns, with two teams working simutaniously on different campaigns, total dev time for one campaign being 12 months.
with that in mind, team 2 should have been 6months into the development of campaign 5 on april 2007 when utopia should have been released.

Yet there has been no mention of a possible (canceled or otherwise) C5. I suppose it is more likely to think that they either all pooled together for Utopia, or that after the release of Nightfall, Team 2 sat back for a while, started discussing C5, but instead they opted to start working on GW2, while Team 1 reconstructed the Utopia content they already had into EotN.
Unless, ofcourse, the decision on GW2 was made during a dev meeting concerning Utopia..

'later this year' is when we should expect some gw2 news as confirmed by the CRM, best bet is PAX, anets biggest event attendance in september.
failing that, we might get some indirect information on the progress of gw2 from the 2h ncsoft earnings conference call in august.

If no Info on GW2 at PAX, then we would have to w8 for the first GW2 Book to release (23 Feb 2010).
If we wont get any infomation there either, I might consider becoming an emo.

My notes say that on June 14th 2006 the lawyer (Peter J. Willsey) who usually does the trademark registrations for ArenaNet registered guildwarsutopia.com. So we can pin the first draft of the Utopia project around the time Nightfall production was nearing its end. (Which makes sense, since after Nightfall is out the door, Anet has to go to NC to secure funding for working on the next title). One of the earliest rumors was that Gwen from the tutorial was finally coming back. At the same time the Bard class was rumored based on an unused artwork released along Factions. Later in EotN we of course meet Gwen, but we only get a hint at a Bard class in the shape of "the Flaming Lutes".
But in Junes 2006 neither GW2 nor Eye of the North were announced at that time. After all, Nightfall was in the final stages of production. Nightfall still had references to Utopia as it seems, especially towards a vanishing island that might be the hub of time. It took until March 07 until anything leaked so badly Anet HAD to react. Then we were told that Utopia was basically scrapped, not it was called Eye of the North and GW2 war going to reboot the franchise sometime 2009.
On April 11th 2007 BlightedEmpires.com was once again registered by that one lawyer (Peter J. Willsey) doing work for ArenaNet. That entry was refreshed on March 12 2009, so as far as I see it that is the current Project name / subtitle of GW2. The first real activity for the domain itself can be traced to December 18th 2007. That is in line with my other projection about when work on GW2 really began.
So if you think you have been waiting for GW2 too long, I got these four games for you:

Interesting about Blighted Empires, while I think that filing trademark registrations will likely lag behind a good amount from the start of design... it is good evidence. Hopefully in the GW2 CE we get another one of those cool DVD's. Good post, 4th.

It's looking like the voice acting for GW2 has been done. If you search the news, occasionally you will stumble across an article with another voice actor mentioning GW2 on their resume. We've seen quite a bunch of these now over the last several months. They wouldn't be doing voice acting if the important content wasn't pretty much finalized, otherwise they'd just have to re-do it after changing anything.
My guess is GW2 is very close to beta, and is only waiting until Aion releases. I'll bet any GW2 info that appears at PAX will be pretty low key, but they still want to show something, since PAX is the big local tradeshow.
The estimated times for the GW2 books seem to indicate that GW2 publicity will be in full swing by that time. There's no point in a GW2 book coming out in a vacuum; no one would care, and only diehards would buy it. So probably a big marketing campaign will be in swing by then.

Interesting info. April 11, 2007 is of course right around when GW 2 was announced (March 27, 2007 I believe). If guildwarsutopia.com was registered June 14th, 2006, that's actually a couple of months after Factions was released (April 28, 2006). Nightfall was still 4 months away from release (October 27, 2006).
Do you have any other dates, like the original guildwars.com or factions.com being registered?

But I thought the fist GW2 book (Fall of Ascalon) wasn't due until Feb, 2010? (of course, that date is not confirmed)
And PAX is Sept 4-6, 2009?

By "that time" I was referring to the estimated time for the first book, in Feb. I think there will be a trickle of information that starts at PAX, and that trickle will be a torrent by Feb 2010 when the books come out.
Also, can't wait to go to PAX, it's only across the bridge from me. I've never gone to one of these sorts of things before.

Guildwars.com was registered on August 14th, 2000. Guildwarsfactions.com on December 15th, 2005. Guildwarsnightfall.com on April 6th, 2006.
Edit: eyeofthenorth.com was registered February 20th, 2007

Oh, OK, I gotcha.
Man, super jealous, I would love to go to PAX, just can't fit it in this year. Oh, well maybe next year they'll have some playable GW2 demo or something!

Well, Aion releases in September in the west so PAX will mostly be about Aion if not all. It's NCSoft latest flagship so I don't expect any big announcements about GW2 the first months after Aion's release. So + 6 months and you end up around Feb 2010.

Good point. BUT... for all you know, those voice actors did generic stuff like grunts or yells when people get hit with attacks. Or like merchant sounds of "Hello Booka."
But yeah, that is some nice evidence that the game is progressing at least.

Well one of them (can't remember which guy it was, but someone posted the info here a couple months ago) said he did one of the main characters in GW2.
Then there was another guy who did some named Centaur character.
Also, I can't imagine someone like David Sobolov doing just grunts and random NPC merchants. He's too awesome to waste on that sort of stuff.

I am Captain Cutter in "Halo Wars", Kingpin in "Spiderman: Web of Shadows", Fred Dukes aka the Blob in "X-men Origins: Wolverine: The Game," two major characters in "Guild Wars 2," and I narrate "Shadow Force" for the History Channel. New "Garfield"s are in production and began airing in May on Cartoon Network UK, so hopefully other markets in the near future. Boy did you pick the right time to ask me that question!

When was this? She said they will be at PAX, but didn't state if they were showing GW2 or not.
If you could find the quote, that'd be great.
Also, I found searched through some of Regina's posts on Guru (idk about other fansites) and here's what I found about PAX.
From here
Quote:
Martin will be at GC in Cologne, and a few others from ArenaNet, but the focus for NCsoft as a whole will be Aion.
And yes ArenaNet will be at PAX. (And so will Aion and City of Heroes). :-)
|
I guess it doesn't sound to hopeful for GW2 info. Looks like Aion will still be the spotlight.
