It would be really nice to get some more info from A-net, 2-3 years ago i never had lag, and now i get 20,000+ at least once a day, makes it hard to do almost anything ingame.
Tbh, I wish I could say it's just us bitching and not Anet's fault, but just talking to people online, seeing the ridiculous amount of threads created on it here lately, and the people on GWW and PvX who are having the same issues leads me to believe that they're having some server issues.

I think it'd be nice to get some clarity on this as well.

I agree with MagmaRed on this - if it were truly something that was the fault of Anet's servers, then it'd be happening to huge numbers of people at the exact same time.

I really don't know how many times I need to point out that GWG and those who post on the wikis are not a majority of players...

It is.

Today, again in GvG. My entire team lagged out and froze completely. We knew it wasn't on our side, cause everyone was still able to talk on Vent and of course we were all like "WTF?!?". When the lagspike ended, I asked the other team. They had the exact same lagspike at the exact same time.

And this example isn't just an incident. It already happened to me in GvG 2 days ago. Back then, 2 of my team members lagged out so hard they DC'ed. It also happened to me a week ago, same problem. This time, we all froze at the start of the match which allowed the other team to push straight in and gank our Lord.

So yeah, server lag does happen, quite frequently to be precise. And before you ask, every single one of the examples I just made was with a different guild, playing GvG on a different map, against different opponents. The only thing that matches somewhat is the time they happened: in the CET evening hours, except for one which happened on a Sunday afternoon.

So there you have it.

Ok, first of all the advice given above might all be correct and yet not help one iota.

The internet is not a direct line from A to B, your ISP hands off to a carrier its contracted to, there can be issues there ranging from routing tables to flap (yes, that is a technical term) which is neither in Anets nor your ISP's control. All you can do is alert both Anet and your ISP to the issue.

Second, if it was Anet's fault, say not enough available servers or bandwidth everyone would experience lag at the same time, this is obviously not the case so the n00b who claimed that as a fact is plain wrong, it would affect far more users and far more often then is the case.

As much as it sucks, lag is not going to ever go away, especially since internet traffic is still growing explosively all over the world.

I never claimed it as a fact. I said "It is.", which referred to "...happening to huge numbers of people at the same time". I gave three case examples from my own experience as support. Whether or what I said should be considered a fact is totally up to you. I feel, however, that I provided enough information that supports the idea that the lag is on the server end. Of course, you can simply not believe me, but that would mean that I'd be lying, which I'm not. Every single one of the people I played with during those matches can easily testify.

You, on the other hand, have not supported why you believe that numerous people aren't lagging at the same time. All you said is that according to you, "this is obviously not the case".

So please, don't call me (or whoever else it was you might otherwise be referring to) a n00b, if you don't elaborate your own statements.

Um, a few dozen people is not a 'huge number of people'.

A few hundred, maybe, would be more like it.

I think it may have more to do with cpu load, then a persons internet. For instance in bogroot growths there is a area where there are 50+ monsters plus your party all fighting at once, Ive gotten terrible lag there. Ive noticed it in other places where there are alot of things going on at once. This could be compounded if the servers give priority to things like ha/ab etc. Just my theory.

Enough people have reported MASSIVE lagspikes and I've played enough to know that GW servers are weak (or cheap, or crap, or whatever the term fits best). The lag wasn't alway like that, it just got worse "recently" (I never noted when it happened)

I know my internet and computer are far from top of the line. But I have run games that are harder for the computer and (I think) for the bandwith, and they lagged less than GW.
I've got 3 sec lags (is lagging for a whole fight a spike or just background lag?) in Minister Cho'S estate last time I went there ( that means a 4v6 fight, 10 dots on the radar). That is when I was on the only computer working.
Then, on a weaker computer in the same room, I "barely" lag (read : a steady 1 sec) played wow in a 40 man raid. FORTY MAN! That is more people than you see in 1 radar for most of GW. And that was just our party! And it was playable.

I know my comp and my connection are weaker than average, but GW does lag more than most other games. I cna't say it is their job to ensure that EVERYONE gets no lag, but now it just gets unplayable. One server is too little for a free ANet-game, I think.

Maybe they're uploading a massive huge update on their servers?

People who are lagging, What Internet Provider do you have? What time of the day are lagging most? (all the time is not a good answer) and Are you on Vent/TS when play and lag?

If your I.P. is a smaller company, you are most likely lagging during "Peak" hours (when most people are using the internet, always causes huge lag spikes).

I have FiOS and have no lag issues, cept when my comp acts up.

No lag for me must just be your crappy ISP or computer. You need to study about the internet and all those caps and nodes and hubs you have to go through before you even get to Guild Wars servers. You could live in a crappy neighborhood and get crappy service depending on where those caps and nodes and hubs are located.

ye i been getting bad lag spikes in guild wars the past few days.

i don't know how they handle connections but it can be pretty screwed up. for example, i ran two accounts from one computer and one lag spiked for about 1min while the other was fine. my friends who live in the same house, share the same connection, have had times where one lags out and the other doesn't...

but it doesn't happen to everyone. maybe just those outside the US

Got 1-3k ms lag spikes today which made Blood Washes Blood HM difficult ....

...but got it done after 2 wipes.

TY, laggy.

P.S. Internet speed checks revealed no problem with my internet connection, and nothing was running in my computer background.

My ping has not been as bad as all that (perhaps due to fios and a decent connection), but I have had nasty lagspikes... it takes fewer alt-tabs to start my henchies teleporting, and even when I don't alt-tab at all it sometimes starts happening. Worse, it's crippling when in cities. I can't move at all the first minute or so I log into a major trade center, after which it calms down to orange ping (but not green, at least not in Spamadan or GToB, where running remains laggy until I leave). This occurs even in LA and KC, despite their normally being incredibly smooth.

I may have to dwell in the Int'l dises for a while until this clears up. My alt account is already there, and it's been fine.

To people attributing lag to poor system specs or otherwise mentioning the two together:

Stop it.

Graphical slowdown is not the same as ping. Stop using words you don't understand. The next time you have 20,000ms ping on Guild Wars, open up the command prompt and ping Google. If the ping to Google is 57ms, then ANet (or the routing from your computer to your ISP to ANet) is the problem. If it's also 20,000, then it's your/your ISP's fault. Call their tech support.

Myself, I always get from 50-100ms higher ping to Guild Wars than to other things.

While some Americans are complaining about lag, it seems that the majority of people having issues (myself included) are in Europe, particularly in the UK and the Netherlands. This is almost certainly down to faulty routing.

And to those of you still asserting it's on the player end, get a clue please. If you aren't having problems then this doesn't concern you so don't post. Take the number of people complaining on the forums (1, 2, 3) and multiply that by several thousand. That's how many people this is affecting.

Most lag is caused because:

1) your graphics card can't display stuff fast enough
2) your memory can't hold enough info
3) your ISP is poor
4) your modem/router is poor
5) your CPU is poor
6) some combination of the above

Yes, Anet can and does cause lag at times. Usually when this happens, it hits an entire server (Europe knows this well). I'm not saying Anet isn't to blame for SOME of the lag, but they are unlikely to be the cause of what I see people complain about.
* start rant* Ah so the one day it effected almost all the people in my allaince and in my friends i can say it wasnt anets fault but our? pfft its the fact that anet never admits to the point that they can cause lag at times too. if they admit it once i bet you a lot of people would be happy. instead all we get its not us its you. you dont want us to always says its anets fault well dont always say it our fault too! *end rant*

Yes! thank you! Exactly what I wanted to hear. So annoying when people tell you it's your pc, not only is it inherently condescending but it's also false. Graphical slowdown just makes your frames per second go down, not make you seemingly teleport all over the place when you click a spot on the map, or cause you to not be able to activate any skills and give you a minute long delay in the chat bar.
Me and some other guys in my guild that are indeed from the UK and the Netherlands had spikes of high ping going over 20k ms that sometimes lasts for a few minutes during the daytime. Late in the evening or at night it seems to be fine. Haven't played today yet but that's how it has been the past 2/3 days.

Take your own advice.
Learn about how the internet works before making claims like "If it was Anet's problem, it would happen to everybody."

Just to help people out who are unsure as to how to do this, it's quite simple.

1. Click ‘Start'
2. Click ‘Run' (or put your cursor into the "start search" box if you have Vista)
3. Type ‘command' into the run box and click ‘OK'
4. This will open a black box, type in here "tracert www.google.com" and then press enter.

You will soon know the comparison after the first 3 traces or so. Just a FYI for you people in need.
