Oh man good times in the beginning. No one had a clue what they were doing, everyone would group together and do missions and quests. 15k and FoW armor actually had a high reputation.

Barely having enough money, while playing my first character, to buy the next set of increasing AL armor.
Actually talking to every NPC that had a green "!" to get as many new skills as possible.
Getting pwned by the Jade Scarabs right outside of Amnoon Oasis repeatedly.
Remembering all the talk about Elite skills that were tough to get and thinking "I won't ever need them, waste of time."

Getting run to Granite Citadel on my first day playing and solo capping Mineral Springs with henchies at level 7. No freaking clue what I was doing, but that was apparently better than 90% of the playerbase then.
I then proceeded to get trapped by the Elementalist boss in Old Ascalon (body blocked, yes I was a newb) next to a sign and had to respec to kill it. Mo/Me with Energy Drain.

That isn't possible, at least not the level 7 henchie part. Once you walked into Granite Citadel, the hencies you had with you would automatically level to the same as the henchies available.
Also prior to 7 Sept 05, you also had to go down to Camp Rankor and they also would have leveled there.

What was the thing a couple of years ago when you could change from European District to an American one and vice versa only limited number of times? And the 'change counter' reseting from time to time.. Or has my mind made some cruel twists there?

When Heroes Ascent was actually a major part in determining favor and who got in FoW, when you had to fight for your territory's right to do so.
A real shame all the PvErs QQed endlessly at not wanting to do it and then this rubbish system went in place. it killed alot of the appeal of HA. But I suppose now we can all clamor in the American district, and it killed the purpose of the international district.

Back when favor was determined by the location of the guild winning in HA, you where limited to your home district and international.
You could switch home districts five times. As far as I know, te counter never reset. Though a guildie did contact support and get his account moved back, by saying the fifth move was a mistake.

I am a newer player than the previous IPs. Less than a year playing Guild Wars. I got such a kick reading all the memories of the old veterans. So far this has been my favorite thread and I look forward to returning when more memories are posted. I would like to ask a favor of some of you. The story of The Monk Strike, I would like to hear more about it. The days leading up to it. Who was most instumental in organizing it. The effects it had on the Monking community. Did the Monks make thier point? Could things get to a point now where it can happen again? This sounds like a great story.

That was pretty funny. I think it even drew the attention of Gaile Gray if memory serves. You can read about it here.
I remember changing secondaries to free up attribute points when I had insufficient attribute refund points. Removal of refund points made me pleased. It was nice being able to change secondaries without talking to a profession changer, too.

How about trying to mod weapons and inadvertently ruining them because the system was so cryptic.
Or, when everyone was yelling, "We want Santa," in Lions Arch the first Wintersday. No one had any idea what was going on. So funny.

I remember hearing from guildies about "ascension" while I was still in Maguuma and thinking, "That's going to be freaking awesome".
Not having an elite until being told about them at Ember Light Camp.
Getting a FoW pug, and asking people if the enemies in FoW leave corpses to use Well of Power. And then doing a pretty good job.
Farming the mergoyle things outside of the Gates of Kryta over and over and over to get the money to buy 15k armor for my necro.
Hanging out at the end of the world in Granite Citadel international district and trying to communicate with people who didn't speak English.
Getting a PUG and fighting through The Falls in Maguuma so that some level 20 monk could show us something 'really cool' (that temple of balthazar)
good times, good times...

Some of you are confusing difficulty and borked money making as nostalgia. There was nothing fair about 100K greens, or spending weeks trying to get through THK. Refunding att points was frustrating because it slowed your game right down. "Nerfing" certain monk farming skills made in roads on eliminating gold farmers.
Sure there's a time when everything was fresh, but don't confuse that nostalgia with it being "good". The game was great, but it has got better with all the updates, buffing (and yes, nerfing) and additions done over the years. The game as it stands is INFINITELY better than when it began.

I liked getting a sorta good reputation with playing with others in Sorrow's Furnace. I played my Necro back then and did like 5 or 6 runs a day as a MM in 5 man oro. I made friends and got into groups pretty easily. I never did get Rago's Flame Staff, but got that one death staff right out of Deldrimor War Camp.
That was back with the gear tanking, anyone remember that? ,when the the warrior just held that random door gear, and we instantly pwned everything, good times...
I did Barrage/Pet there too, that was fun. Back then even if Rago's or Brohn's stuff was like 50k +, i didn't care they cost that much, it was the thrill seeing which green you got and you made money every run with drops.

Oh, boy. I came in after Factions, so I never saw that infamous THK monk strike, even though I heard loads about it. Reading through the thread now, it seems so strange.
When I started monking and got my first set of armour (pre-insignia) I got the +hp SJ set, and promptly got scolded by a good friend who was an experienced monk.
"You should have got the +energy set!"
"What for? I can cope with 45 energy, but I could do with more hp."
"You'll need the extra energy."
"I haven't needed the extra energy so far."
"Look, OK? One skill can heal for ~100, that costs you 5e. You could just heal yourself."
"But I lag. I might not get the time to heal myself."
It's really strange to think that now if a PvE monk asks for insignias and rune suggestions, he gets generally told to run the same combination I got scolded for running three years ago - all minor, all survivor. XD

I don't believe the thread is about "fair," or whether the game is better or worse now. It about people's memories of earlier times. And I don't think that you are in a position to tell them whether their memories are good or bad. Only they can say for sure...

My best, and most favorable memory is when HA pitted players from different nations against each other to win the favor for their national servers. I can remember every time I went to ToA everybody was there to root for the American players. It was a good time because there was pride and enthusiasm. I sort of miss that.

I still remember when everyone, EVERYONE would say they were rank 2 in Tombs, because you didn't have a title to display, and NO ONE in the game had the rank 3 emote.
It was hilarious when someone would /rank a Deer, because people would flock, but when some guy /ranked a Wolf, everyone shat huge brix.
