Storage smorage. There is going to be plenty of free storage with the equipment bags. Those who want to pimp out their account will buy the panes. All of it is unnecessary and just a nice gesture to those who are still playing the game. If you truly don't have any room for the 4th year mini pets after getting the new equipment bags then go ahead and buy a pane.

Storage promises have been around for years, delivery has been scant and generally tied to buying stuff (extra tab when you add extra chapter/expansion, other than materials tab). Overall, I've been very disappointed on how Anet has chosen to handle this and a couple other critically bad game features (especially the lack of a trade system). Factoring that disappointment with what else I could get for my money (i.e. other accounts which means more storage, zkeys, minis, etc.), I just can't see buying any storage tabs. (I do understand the convenience argument, but it's not that big a deal for me because I run two accounts on two computers most of the time anyway, so trade between accounts is easy for me personally.)

I've not done the working out myself, but maybe someone here knows how much space in storage can you take up with items that you cannot ever get again and that are completely necessary to hoard?
Can you exceed your Xunlai's 4 panes with such items?

I've never understood why they didn't just allow us to put full bags into the storage, that way one storage slot=10 slots. why hasn't this ever been considered?

I'm pretty sure that's not possible because, as was revealed among this fracas, the GW database stores Character and Account storage information as BLOBs(Binary Large OBjects), basically huge data structures stored in a single monolithic chunk . With a proper Object-oriented design, that would be trivial. With a BLOB, notsomuch. =\

It doesn't work that way.
Data is not saved physically like bags inside bags.
It doesn't matter where you put an item, as long as it exists, it takes up server space.
When you out things in a bag, you are actually storing data in a list.
Each slot in that list will say 'this item is XXX type, has A,B,C,D,et properties and is in slot ###'.
When you get a belt or a bag, you are not gettting more slots, you are just unlocking already existing slots to use.
Player head, the first slot in the belt, the weapon of a hero you don't have unlocked... they all are existing slots waiting to be used.
You can't put bags inside bags or inside the storage, because there is not 'Storage slot1/bag slot 1' slots.

Considering Anet must pay the employees to continue to update a game that they let us play for FREE, as well as maintain the servers that RUN said game, I have no issue with purchasing storage tabs if I wantthem. Just as I did not have any issues purchasing extra character slots when I wanted them.
Anet isn't trying to be greedy or screw their players. They are trying to offer us the things many have whined that they wanted, however they need to have some sort of revenue or else the game we enjoy will simply cease to be. The funding for GW2 will not be there and it will never be released. Businesses have bills to pay too.

Can't read it all (again)... If this is already posted I'm sorry. I just read Regina's response (addressed to Cloud?), it is really sad what she mentions. Basically I interpret it as: "Yeah lots and lots of people won't buy it, but a tiny portion will buy it regardless of price". That's how it sounds to me and what's sad is that they are looking at those that will buy it as the reason to charge money to get this enhancement to an already existing feature.
Do the math, the back then all new hat storage guy has saved me over 100 storage slots (yes, I was a hat wh*re)... In comparison $9.99 will give me room for 20 more things.... Silly much. I'm glad Gaile didn't come up with the plan to charge $9.99 for the festival hats storage guy.
Material storage is another fine example. We all needed space so they came up with the material storage. Even with its limitations (250 only, less than needed for some armours) it was a very nice _and free_ addition (or is it tied to having a factions account? can't remember) to the feature we call 'storage'. Now storage is being enhanced again but this time it comes with a price tag. The few people agreeing to pay this price are killing the posibility of getting this the same way we got all other updates (free, as promissed during launch) and are allowing Anet to brake their promisses.
Anyone buying storage panes should be aware that they are paying $9.99 for what's on the server probably less than 10 kilobytes (the most expensive bytes you've bought in your life!).
Even worse is that the server could actually have all the space for our tabs allocated regardless of having it enabled or not for an account. They are only seeing what people will buy and will not buy as an experiment.
That's all for now.

Game companies are businesses. As a business, they cannot put their resources (both physical and not physical) out there without at the very least making what those resources cost them back. If they aren't compensated for the resources they use, they will go out of business. This is why no company just gives everything away.

I do see your point here. Honestly when the armor and weapon storage update happens I don't think I'll need the extra space but if I did I think $5 would be more reasonable. It costs $10 for a new character slot to play and do something with, but the same price for, as was already said, virtual space? I don't think so.

I hear this a lot and it is really stupid. Anet pays their employees based on unit sales. They DON'T let is play for free (that is a big misconception)...we paid to play the game under the marketing model they gave us. They were supposed to use that money to run the game. Anything else is extra money they want from the players.

Actually, that model is based on their old business idea - releasing an expansion once a year. They gave up on that model to focus on building a bigger and better game. In that time, the gaming/MMO industry changed, making them rethink their strategy slightly. They had to find a way to make money to get them through to GW2.
If you have a problem with how the world revolves around money, ergo gaming does, that is NOT Anet's fault. They're doing what any business does - making money to survive.

So Serenity, here is where your statements fall apart. The original GW1 sales model, and play for free mode... Is still being positioned by A.Net for GW2.
So if it failed, then why would we fall for it again for GW2?
I won't, I want them to admit it failed. And then tell us GW2 is going to be pay2play. That way we are guarenteed better monthly content.

Again, I have no problem with them making money. I have a problem with what they are selling and how they are going about it. They might as well slap the players in the face. I'm sorry but IMO anybody who buys this stuff is retarded (particularly after the new info I got today on what they are selling and all the numbers involved etc). All I have to say is...imagine if they were doing this from the start. LoL. Where does it end now?
Edit: And as the previous poster brilliantly stated, why should this stop in GW2? Same model my friend.

/signed I can afford it, and I won't buy it. I feel this game is going the way of Korean F2P Cash shop games you can get off any website for free in terms of payment model.

You are right, Alazar.
I am afraid that GW2 is not going to stop the trend, but to embrace the item mall concept even more.
Oh well. We could as well play Free Realms, going for a similar free to play item mall concept. Or just forget about the MMO genre, I am rather unsatisfied with progress only being made in adding more options to make customers pay for optional things, with more and more things becoming optional. Sigh.
