Is ANet getting reckless?
Well, reckless is the only thing I can use to describe what happened to me today. I was doing a DayWay UWSC when suddenly I disconnect from the server. This didn't make me too sad as I had just popped pits and gotten triple ecto. What happened next made me mad. Not only did I DC and Err Code 007 out and reappear in ToA, apparantly EVERYONE did. ToA had SIX districts. Now this was already pretty bad. But what happened next was worse. I hit "I" and see only 1 ecto in my inventory. Note the triple drop. Not only did they DC everyone, but they turned back the servers a few minutes. Now I think a warning could have sufficed. Now 2 ecto doesn't sound bad, and its not, but my friend had finished a SoOSC not 5 minutes before it. You can go ahead and guess what happened to him. Now this might have been a freak accident, but it just so happens that ANet also removed every single Wintersday decoration at exactly the time everyone DC'd.
Now my question is, is ANet just getting reckless/careless with their management of the GW Community? Its not just this aspect of server management (which btw someone apparantly bought and now owns an ANet server in Dallas and refuses to give it back because he legally aquired it) but in balancing too. They are just making changes left and right.
Regarding the next skill update, they plan to nerf Shadow Form. Did they think this through?
First off, either, 1) They make it still a plausible but not nearly half as good a skill or 2) They completely change the functionality.
EITHER ONE of these will cause the economy to go wild and cause a huge number of people to quit. Did they really think this through?
Next, their poorer and poorer server management. I think I can fairly say this year's Kamadan server for Wintersday officially sucked (up to the late December prep for finale update). Every single district besides 1 had an average ping of 7k+ for all my alliance members and I'm guessing everyone. Also, note the server fiasco mentioned above. Besides that, the servers have also declined in quality all across the game, as I've seen more and more people lagging/disconnecting who have had no problems in the past.
So the 2nd question: Should ANet keep changing GW or just leave it how it is and get on with GW2 (release date set for late 2010)?
1st question again: Is ANet's management of the game slipping (servers and Wintersday removal w/o warning given above, if you can think of more examples, please post them)?

I had just finished a trade when the servers decided to rollback and was pretty surprised to find the platinum back in my inventory. I didn't get any extra money, don't panic, it's just that I haven't see a rollback in a while. Unintended consequence maybe but yes...it was a pretty lousy way to end an event.
As for the rest, I'll repeat what I wrote in one of these other threads. I honestly don't care what they change, this includes SF, but I do wish they would hurry up and do it. Look at what happened to the market on just the threat of a nerf. That alone should give valuable insight to what type of impact these sweeping farming changes they are proposing will have. The sooner they tactically nuke PvE the sooner things will settle back down.

Some good questions but with a bit of random SF QQ thrown in to spoil the post.
And of course they should keep changing things, the day they don't is the day GW does start to die.

I think the fact that Anet responded faster/better than NCSoft regarding the possible security flaws with NCSoft shows they aren't reckless.

It's interesting. Perhaps it means GW2 is going to be a much worse online experience from the beginning, if this is the state of their business and server model.

For clarity: did the timing of the rollback coincide with the end of the event?
If not, this isn't a huge deal. Just another example of the continued deterioration of the servers.
If so, then you have a potential problem. Predictable rollbacks can probably be exploited. Already happened once.

I agree with you on everything except for your disapproval of a SF nerf. I think this is needed very much. SF is god mode. It requires 0 skill to run. It takes away any challenge in the game. It turned elite areas into <30 minute farms. WTF? They are ELITE areas. Elite means the best of the best, hardest of the hardest. Elite areas SHOULD take 3 hours to complete, they SHOULD kick your ass more times than not. They are elite, the hardest areas in the game, and SF turned them into just another farm. SF made valuable golds such as Elemental Swords and Colossal Scimitars worthless. Hell, it made everything besides high end minis and a select number of golds worthless. Those being Tormented items, Eternal Blades, Obby Edges, Crystallines, and just a few others. It is ONE of the things that turned the idea of a balanced group into a laughing matter. Personally, I have never enjoyed SF. Partly because I don't need to use a cookie-cutter, god-mode build like this to make money as I already have a good amount of money from back when I played this game 24/7. Also, because I see no fun in doing something where failure is really not an option. I like the risk of failure. It makes me better. When I fail it makes me want to succeed that much more. Now granted, I don't want to fail time and time again as that gets frustrating and boring, but a failure now and then is good. That said, I cannot wait for the SF nerf and the QQing it will bring. If people quit that will make it even better. If the only reason you played this game was to use a talentless skill to farm things that should take time to achieve then you shouldn't have played this game in the first place.

I'd just like to throw in a clarification on this supposed "rollback."
What you experienced was not actually a rollback. What happened is that some information was communicated between your game client and the server, (getting your first ecto). Then, this information got written to the official Guild Wars database, recording that it happened.
Then you picked up two more ecto, and then got disconnected. Since the latest information about these two new ectos was not written to the database, when you re-logged in, it never happened.
So technically nothing was actually rolled back. There was no malice or evil intent by Anet. It's just bad circumstances...
The same thing happened a few years back, at the Dragon Festival. Many people on Nine Rings lost many hours of progress because they were set to "Away." The rules for writing to the database back then were not to make database updates to people that were set to "Away," since they aren't supposed to be doing anything, so nothing supposedly needed updating. Because of all the people complaining about that "rollback," they changed the database update rules for "Away" status to write sometimes, though not as often as an "Online" player.
So what can you do to trigger one of these database updates? I'm not sure anyone (in the public) knows...

I agree with all of the above, glad that I wasn't doing much when the rollback happened, but why would arena net be that careless? have one of those, server will roll back in a 10 minutes, please log in later, etc etc.
You lost 2 ectos? Ouuuuch man, I'd kill for that (lol)
People like me who don't have time to play the game 24/7 need that kind of dough, small though it may be ^^
As for SF... Well, I enjoy the fun of not having to fight everything, just running through it all is kind of a thrill. You're right, it doesn't take much skill, but it's the small differences in farming areas that makes it a challenge. Farming it over and over isn't fun, its putting together the skills and realizing that it actually works.
I say they keep SF and make something like touch skills that still get through it. Keep SF, but as said above, make it more of a challenge.

Rollback? I'd hardly think so. You probably just ended up doing stuff after the servers were deemed null for altering data, and so whatever you did past that point wasn't going to count on the updated servers. Too bad for you, I guess you just need to pay more attention to when ANet is planning for events to begin and end next time.

Hmmm...
To answer the main question:
Yes.
Back in the good old days, the ANet staff didn't have skills (excluding PvE-only skills) separated. Now, I constantly see PvP versions and PvE versions which heavily disappoint me.
The problem isn't just in the PvE world. ^^

Huh?
OT: Everytime a GW player DC's, an ANet live team member stubs their toe..
