If you look through some of the older high end trade forums, There as a person who had a r8 unconditional Fellblade who tried to sell it for mini Kanaxi's (worth more than pandas) The S/B was 1 unded Kanaxi and the B/O was 7 unded Kanaxis (Kanaxii??), while he did not get a single bid on the item, it is a pretty sweet sword.

If we're still talking about rare weapons, one can't forget the nerfed skins, like the Dead Skin Water and Fire Staves (officially Tyrian Skin), like mine:
Only available now from collectors.

I see no such thing as a RARE WEAPON only a RARE SKIN as anyone can have a WEAPON of max stats that looks like anything. And because there is no extra power to a RARE anything there isn't any reason to try to get them as nobody cares what anyone else has in this game because of same ole stats. This has always been the major problem with this game but it was soooooooooooooooo much better before inscriptions as most everything was more valueable because max stats wasn't COMMON then. Now anyone and everyone gets easy 15^50 and +30hp and 20/20 inscriptions like they were candy. Worst thing they ever did to this game was put inscriptions into the game.

One man's trash is another man's treasure and vice versa. Alot of ppl think certain items have/hold value others will argue they don't. It's mainly a matter of opinion. If one person has a buyer for said item for said value, then that item has "that" value. If there is no buyer for said item at said value, then it does not. Not like there is appraised insurance value in this game. As for rarity.. a lot of things can be rare....extinct animal crap is rare, doesn't mean it holds value to most ppl. It's all a matter of opinion. Most ppl outside of GW think it's a waste of time, again matter of opinion. Just my opinion!

You could get a functioning weapon with all the bells and whistles from collectors/crafters prior to the introduction of inscriptions.
The only thing that inscriptions allowed was getting the skin you wanted. And a substantial majority of the time you could even get the skin you wanted in collector/crafter/green items pre-inscriptions.

Because skin = vanity, not necessity.
Also many forget that in the first several months of GW the rare skins were also accessible, they just weren't all guaranteed insta-perfects. But back then most people weren't anywhere as spoiled as today and knew that small equipment imperfections make practically zero difference on a character's performance in PvE. But the cool aspects of hunting for rarities and actually being able to improve your character have died in October 2006.

And inscriptions determine power. Power and vanity are very different beasts, and ne'er the two shall meet.
This game relies on everyone being on a level playing field. Inscriptions provided that; it is easy to get a maximum weapon with decent modifiers, thus allowing you to function in your chosen profession to its fullest extent. It used to be equally easy by relying on collectors, this just made power completely disjointed from skin.
Meanwhile, vanity is preserved because it no longer relies on beating a random numbers engine. When you get a rare skin, it is a rare skin, and that is all there is to it. The "cool aspects", as you describe, came at the cost of 90% of rare items being worthless wastes of space wrapped in a nice skin, because they didn't contain the mods you needed. Nowadays, the cool aspect is getting the skin, because the skin is all that matters, and the rarity is tied to drop rate, not random modifier allocation.
The only thing that can be said of the old system is "rare weapons that actually worked were rarer", which is just another way of saying that people want their special thing to be the only special thing on the block.
The inscription system is more convenient, more versatile, and more practical. It levels the playing field in power and keeps it completely separate from vanity, thus allowing rarity to be tied directly to aesthetics, where it should be.

The inscription system is incomplete. Prophecies and Factions weapons can drop with upgrades that are not available in NF or EotN, and they may also have upgrade combinations that are impossible to duplicate with the inscription system.
edit:
These aren't really "rare" like this thread is about, but inscriptions can't duplicate these. There are many other combinations that are impossible with the inscription system; these are just some examples.

Let's keep it civil. Also, we can argue whether or not the inscription system is a good thing all day and not get anywhere. Some people were made better off, others were made worse off. You're not going to convince anyone that was made better off by explaining how you were made worse off. Just saying.

You are aware that there HAS only been 17 kanaxais in the game. X of those are banned and Y are already dedicated. I'd say there aren't even 7 unded kanaxais in the game atm. And ofc kanaxais are worht more then pandas , there are around 100-250 pandas in the game, huge difference barly comparable.
