Arrow Guild Wars post mortem .

Both a question and suggestion.
Do you think that sooner or later everyone from Guild Wars will move on to Guild Wars 2, and from one reason or another there will be a day when the old Guild Wars will just shut down ?
And if so, knowing that the game doesn't even start without a running internet connection , wouldn't you like to have the option of being able to still run around the game offline ? One can finish the main story line alone . I would love to know if they can make the game to run offline and give you the feel that regardless of its nature , you still own the game years after the servers went down. I mean its still a game that we love. And as it is , at least for me not knowing much of an usual MMO's last years behavior its still something that you can't keep on a shelf.

Why bother? The only reason people play at this point is for titles for GW2 or for their guild or whatnot.

It would be nice to have an offline version before they close the servers, or at least a server side version so small groups can make their own servers (like Guild Servers or what not) for those people that want to keep playing it with friends after it is not supported, but don't bet on it.

The only reason to play GW once GW2 comes out is because you don't have GW2, you're trying to get some kind of benefit in GW2 through GW, or you like GW more. I wouldn't be surprised to see skill balances stop happening after some time that GW2 has been out, and at that point, GW becomes super boring to even bother with.

Or they could just release the code of the game so people could play on private servers like every other older game.

Hell, more people still play EQ over EQ2....if GW2 is bad, that could happen again.

they might turn GW F2P
with a number of microtransactions that are banned from pvp
(just a guess, though, but as long as they can keep earning money from GW1, they probably will)

I don't think they'd be able to shut off the servers without making a single-player version available to play. I don't think they'll ever completely shut off the servers at all, really. Maybe a number of them, not all of them.

It is entirely possible another company might step in and offer to provide hosting for the small remainder of the community.

Happened with Nox when Westwood went down.

I don't think the servers will go down unless Anet ceases operations. A few nostalgic players will continue playing forever, but the server(s) needed for them to play will be so few as to be negligible.

I've been playing since it came out and will not be buying the sequel. I also am in a two man guild where we don't do any 'guild like' stuff.

LIke the guy you quoted was implying, "speak for yourself".

Same here. It's not really the content, it's who I play with that counts.

That said, I'll probably get GW2 as well if my friends do, even tough I believe it will be nowhere as good as GW1 when it first came out.

I disagree. As someone who's purchased a product, he has a right to know when that product will no longer be available. I personally have always been surprised that some gamers don't seem to care if they can no longer play a game. In fact that very idea is one reason I hesitate to play online games in the first place.

If I buy a DvD or book or CD, I can still use it a decade later, as long as I have the compatible hardware. Its a reasonable question to ask whether or not the same will be true for a Video game purchase.

i love gw

i will always play it so long as i am given the ability

gw2 is going to be big and it will tie in with gw1 nicely in so that gw1 will not be left untouched by players UNLESS they want to limit their gw2 experience

of course this is just an assumption, thats the function... but hey, it's better than nutthin.

you dig???

solid!

-.-
