This doesn't excite me all that much, as I still won't use melee heros too often. I just don't like them, and don't see what they can do to make them more appealing to me. To me casters will just always outshine them. :/
As for what the new hero could be, it intrigues me. Something unexpected, and not a ranger or sin. Variable profession would be nice, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. >.>

Sylvari are not born for another 225 years in the GW1 timeline. The Pale Tree is a Pale Twig at the end of EotN. Any passerby could perform Sylvari genocide by stepping on it.

By the time everything is all said and done relating to the return/wedding arc, people will have another Hero in their parties. We've added Heroes this way in the past, notably with M.O.X., and to a lesser extent, Zenmai and Olias got the same treatment, and it's something I'd like to carry forward with future content. As a player, I feel like it's pretty cool to invest the time in building up someone new, getting to know and work with them, and eventually having them join your side.
|
I have to say this did intrigue me... It does make it sound awfully like Miku but earlier on he said:

Along the way players will cross paths and work with someone that will be a key player in the Winds of Change storyline that's still to come.

Hurrah -_- I can't wait to see more of her well thought through target calling.
So, as it's someone who's involved in the current story arc, any ideas thus far other than Miku? Blimm/Zinn maybe?

I'm afraid buffing melee heroes will require more than fixing AI...

The main problem of melee heroes is their AI. Of course the fact that they can't use essential skills like whirlwind attack, AoHM, critical agility, etc, doesn't help much.
Basically as everyone said, they will flee from AoE attacks, running away and stop attacking for precious seconds, even if they are taking low amounts of damage or even no damage from it.
Additionally the fact they will try to follow the human player attacks, running back and forwards if you switch targets, denies them one of the melee professions biggest advantages - being able to kill 1 target by themselves (or as a duo) given access to deep wound and freeing the rest of the party to take on a second target.
The appeal of melee heroes (if those weakness are somewhat reduced) is the ability to buff them with orders, SoH, GDW, splinter and the like (which isn't easy to do if players H/H, but the 7 heroes update will open further possibilities).

There's no viable reason to believe Togo has a son...and where has he been all this time if he exists?

Thinking about it... Zinn is a warrior... Hmm... Seems silly to have 4 warrior heroes though. Mind you, if we get Embark Beach along with WoC... I doubt it'll be a Kurzick rit considering Xandra is a Luxon rit. It could also be that the melee hero tweaks are nothing whatsoever to do with the new hero. We've already been told it's not a assassin which rules out Miku. We DO know that it's someone who's already part of what we've played so far (or at the very least will be by the end of the wedding).
At the moment I'm trying to think about all the NPCs that were involved with WiK/HotN. Mind you, without knowing more about WoC and what it'll involve, it's hard to really say.

Ok so we are getting a new hero who we meet during the preparations for the wedding. Doesnt that kind of eliminate all those Canthan guesses?
I'm really hoping on a variable primairy aswell. But I believe Razah was ment to be that kind of hero, at which Anet found out they were not capable of creating it in the way they had in mind. I wonder if they could now. Besides that, it would either need to be a hero that is very mystical (like Razah) or just a superhero, being able to handle all kinds of magic. Also how would they implement that into the armor rating? Dont think they are able to change that along the change of primairy profession.
In the line of where things are going, I think the content will proceed after the wedding, making their way to settling in the coming city Ebonhawk. I think the hero might appear on your way here, so probably will be a Human vanguard of some vegetarian Charr.

Why would Zinn want to join you, anyway?
The PC isn't going to get ancient artifacts any time soon. No discovering ancient lore or powerful magic scheduled.
The threat of Destroyers, who originally made Asura get out to the surface and teamed Vekk up with the PC, is long gone. There's no reason why any Asura would like to give up his laboratory, experiments and science just to accompany some bookah in his adventures around the whole world. Especially that Zinn has to plan his vengeance on the Council.
Maybe a new golem from Zinn and Blimm duet, but i doubt we'll get any real aid from the asura, party-wise speaking.
Sylvaris are also, obviously, excluded.
Charr? Apart of Pyre's warband, the only 'friendly' charr is Dune Teardrinker. I don't think he's going to give up his polymocking just to wander with some random meat and its mice.
A tyrian centaur? The only peaceful one i know is Ventari and he's obviously not going to travel the world with us, as his job in the world's lore is already known and, so to say, set in stone.
Maybe a changed dwarf then? One of those that survived the struggle with destroyers and came back to the surface to help the hero who once helped them. Yet even then, why? Is there any dwarf that might be alive by this time and would have any reason to join us?
I'd also rule out the usually-hostile creatures like demons (of all kind) and djinns. It would be just a bit weird to command a Margonite hero, even though it might be cool.
A tyrian tengu? I don't remind any tengu that might be even remotely interested in it...
A dredge from the retaken Sorrow's Furnace would be unexpected and, besides a dwarf, is the most probable out of the races mentioned so far. As a side note, i'd love to see - and take part in - retaking SF for the dredge during GW: B.
This leaves us either a norn or a human.
Out of non-human races, a norn is most likely to join us on dangerous adventures, to slay whatever comes at hand. Which norn NPCs know our PC and might be interested in travelling? Is there any norn, besides Jora, who owns us a favor?
The human population is big in GW1, so it would be useful to divide it into factions we know. Anyone of the Ebon Vanguard? Salma's allies - Bartholos? Dinas? A former White Mantle follower who'd like to repent for sins? Someone from Ascalon?
I'd rule out the whole Elona. Cantha is possible, but doubtful, as we'll get a hero at the end of HotN, and we know that HotN is not connected with the upcoming canthan content in any way - i doubt the new hero will be a bridge between HotN and WoC.
There are also non-ordinary possibilities - a spirit from the Mists, an undead XYZ, etc - but as Konig and Stumme hinted, the new hero is quite obvious, /facepalm-like obvious, so i wouldn't wander into those parts.

I've only very recently started using an Earthshaker hero, which is great. However they really, really do have a problem with staying on locked targets, I don't get it. Because when there's 2 healers in a mob, I tend to lock Jora on 1 and put GDW on her, then I focus others on the 2nd healer. The first will be knocklocked/dead so doesn't pose any more problems.

I'm guessing Egil Fireteller (paragon), or the seer in Zinn's lab (mesmer).

The only bridge is (from what I could gather from the interview) Miku. It's already been confirmed that she's not going to be the new hero though.
The thing that intrigues me is the whole fact that it's meant to be someone we're going to have a lot of contact with during the rest of HotN. I'm going to be presumptuous and say that the chances are it's someone involved in/around Olafsted as that's where the wedding is set. Maybe Jora will no longer be the token Norn.

Hm... I rarely use melee heroes, but when I do, I only bring interruptions and/or AoE with them.
They can be a little annoying, running around from target to target, or going back to you instead going directly to the next target, so most builds that focus on a single target are no good.
That's why I never bring an assassin hero.

Really? Not a ranger, neither a sin, but still /facepalm obvious.
Then would it be that hero that openly switched to Paragon primary? You know, the one whose wife is always with you killing things sadistically somewhere in the world?
Which raises the following question: are there any viable hero team builds using both Paragon and Mesmer?
