^ then don't buy 8, buy a pack of 3 or even just 1. As for money grubbing... so? They are a business after all and they need to earn money somehow.
I feel it's perfectly fair although I won't buy a pack of 8 since I don't think I'd ever use that many. a pack of 3? sure but I doubt I'd need 8 merc slots.

I have to say, BEAUTIFUL update. Amazing implementation, great ideas, the title fixes are wonderful (and clearly everyone else though so too, every main town was filled with folks getting Drunkard ), and 7 heroes is such a blast.
One thing: Please update the F11 menu to be able to bind the skills on heroes 4-7. Even if it's just one skill, I'd like to be able to control a single skill cast of each hero.

In no way is $45 even remotely close to a reasonably priced feature. They have the players by the balls and they know anyone who is still playing 6 years after the game is released is going to pay insane amounts for incredibly unreasonably priced features if they want them at all. It's a slap in the face to everyone else that they happen to give you a gameplay advantage in the process... or another marketing exploit.

QFT
How much costs a DLC nowadays?
As I said earlier, 45 is a bit overpriced imho, its the retail price of most new games atm. At $45 my answer is "no thank you".
I love the game, I want to support these guys, but I want to make it with a fair price.
$20-25 for 8 slots its sure-buy.

You know you guys don't have to buy the mercenaries, right?
Don't complain that you have to pay for a DVD when you've already seen the movie.

I would have gone for that myself, really, if not for the fact that I've got to shell out money for car repairs this week. I'll just have to remember to unequip the three I have if I decide to replace them with a different character.

You can get most brand new games, NOT 6 YEAR OLD ONES, for $40-60. For $45 in a 6 year old game you're getting 8 custom skinned heroes when you already have what....30? Justifying that it's "less than a brand new game" is ridiculous. Justifying that it's cheaper than buying 8 individually is just as ridiculous. The sum of $45 for 8 custom skins on heroes is laughable, especially when they don't link runes or weapons from the actual characters.
Apok: no, we don't have to buy them. That's why we're not. We WOULD, however, if they were priced reasonably. 8 mercenary slots for $20 would be an instant purchase on my part. I'd do it during my lunch break. Alienating an arbitrary 75% of the playerbase during a recessed economy with a grossly overpriced "shiny" feature, or pricing it reasonably and getting that amount from, say, 75% of the playerbase. Let's do some simple arbitrary math:
1 million players. 250,000 buy the $45 package. That's $11,250,000.
1 million players. 750,000 buy the same package but for $20. That's $15,000,000. Now, we all can guess that these numbers are probably inflated. I'd be very surprised if more than 10,000 players buy the full package. But I can make a reasonable hypothesis that Anet will get a significant increase in revenue by dropping the price, simply due to volume.
But this has been stated before ad nauseum and has been ignored. I don't just want a "sale day" special, either. What if I'm busy that week and don't notice the "half off" price? they did that for the Storage panes, and I was working so much that I missed the window. If it were all the time, I'd have a full Xunlai box, instead of the 4 plus materials that I have now. That's money that Anet lost out on, and they're losing out on even more now.

Mercenary heroes are mostly cosmetic (unless you want to make full parties of the same profession).
The fact that you need to strip all you merc heroes based on the same character if you want to update their appearance is extremely annoying.

It's a way to allow people to buy in bulk and save some money unlike if they bought one at a time. The pack is made cheaper than if you bought one at a time so if people wanted to, they could buy a big pack like that.
When you think about it like that, the $45 is perfectly fair imo
|
You realize that they determined the price of them right? Now this is really going to depend on what you call fair, so I'm not expecting to convince anyone. But just in my opinion, a hero slot is not worth $9. The bulk pack is designed to make you think you are getting a bargain for $45 when in reality you are just getting ripped of right from the get go. I don't know how people can not see this, unless they truly believe that a slot is worth $9 a piece.

Best update from ANet in a long time! Embark beach is lovely, the changes to drunkard and survivor make sense (speaking as someone who already has an ale hound and a pre-titles main), and the use of full hero parties will open up parts of the game to me that haven't been so accessible (e.g. I can casually stroll through uw now and enjoy the scenery without worrying about other players). I'm not too fussed about the mercenary hero feature....I can afford it but I don't need it.

I feel that determining the value of my entertainment dollars is up to me.
45 dollars, will access what will really be 8 x 15 heroes for all my chars, and any future chars. That is dirt cheap over the course of the game,
My heroes will at last, be mine. Their fancy armor will be to my taste, not a narrow choice of hero sets.
This will effect my visual enjoyment of the game and enhance the value of the time I have spent collecting elite armors as well.
I don't think any game has offered any purchaseable content that generated the level of excitement I feel over this.
So, for me.. I have no issues with the price. Others may disagree, but the choice is theirs to make. I'll get more enjoyment over time from this than my boys do blowing 60 bucks on an Xbox game they beat in a week and throw in a drawer.

I got drunkard and survivor the old fashioned way and I don't care. So not 'all of us' I think.

Got drunkard before this update, never bothered with survivor...if I get it, so be it. Also not worried about LDOA...
Who cares what other people think? If YOU know, and the people YOU care about know that you did it the hard way, that's all that matters.
