I like minipets, they're a nice thing to throw your money at. I've still got all the ded ones from my HoM, just cos there's no reason to sell the for me.
Personally, I like the mini pig and cele pig. Just because of some "age" value to them I suppose.

Most of them are nothing but HOM points or something to sell for profit.

I had been collecting minis a long time before the HoM calculator kicked in - and i'd already got nearly all annual pets back then, except for the Eye and MKT (there were no 5th year pets then). I also got some other pets in my HoM, dedicated years ago just for the fun of dedicating and collecting - nothing too high end, like Asura, Varesh, Livia (was a must after she was added in WiK), some Celestials.
So i had 58 pets in my HoM once the calculator came out and i pretty much haven't dedicated anything since then for a long, long time.
About a month ago i decided i want to finish my annual collection, at least with the two greens, and maybe with the 5th years if their prices drop a little when we're closer to GW2. I did get MKT and the Eye, finishing my 1-4 collection, but i didn't really bother anymore - it might change, though.
So yeah - it's more akin to collecting coins (which i got into for some time, but then sold the whole collection) than just boosting my HoM. Deleting or giving away pets once they're dedicated - except for the chosen few - doesn't change a thing in this approach.
However, i've also made the most money in the game thanks to pets. One day, several years ago, i thought i'd try to trade pets (and only pets), with only 15k to my name, starting with cheap-ass whites, ending up with as high as Kuunavangs (and one lucky Grawl). My pet trading 'career' was never continuous, though - i traded only when i needed money for something, and it always kinda worked, getting me all i needed in a week or two, without ever leaving towns. Thanks to pets, of all kinds but asian rares that went through my hands, i was able to completely fill three HoMs and get three GWAMMs (Glint had her kid's helping claw in it, too).
That stuff makes one kind of sentimental for pets.

Very same thing here, 'working' on the same titles even

Mini pets are fun for me to collect, similar to chasing down the max titles, completing GWAMM and a full HoM. Just a target that's fun to work towards and complete. I also wanted to collect "all" minis, but the asians were simply out of reach for me. I don't have the time to farm/grind/power trade that much wealth, so I set a goal of 100 minis in my HoM and called it good.
If the 7th year presents gives me the opportunity to pick off a rare asian mini or two, then great!! If not, I'll just do other fun goals like completing my treasure, wisdom and luxon titles even though I already achieved GWAMM. You should keep the game fun and enjoy it, otherwise it is work and that is a four-letter word!!
I am really disappointed if the other thread was closed; it was quite entertaining and offered a good view of the many personalities that play the game worldwide.
The thread also had a good lesson for life in that you shouldn't put all of your wealth into one type of investment. Everything fluctuates in value, whether it is ecto, arms or rare minis in GW or currency, stocks, gold and real estate in real life. All those peeps that cried a river when their Enron stock became worthless didn't shed a single tear as the stock was sky-rocketing. It was only unfair after they liquidated all of their other assets and placed it all in a phony stock.
Simply take this 7th birthday present decision by Anet as a cheap lesson in diversifying your assets!! Oh yea, also remember GW is simply a game you play to have fun!! Nothing more unless you are a shady gold reseller.

Pretty much this. They are merely in game for people to collect. I myself collect the ones I personally like. Most however only see them as having a monetary or elitist purpose which in turn ruins them.

The only purpose they served for me was filling my HoM. Other than that, they're just bag/chest fillers. A few people in my alliance/guild wanted the expensive ones I dedicated, so I gave them away. I couldn't care less about the gold for 'em, since both of my accounts were maxed on gold a while ago.
They were kinda fun to have way back in the fun days. Hell, 99.9% of the time I didn't even remember to have em tag along with me.
I remember grinding for those Peacekeeper & Panda minis, but that got old quickly...

I like collecting minipets for the sake of the collection. But they're only two which stand out from the rest for me. It's a shame, but people seem to be more concerned with the economic status of minipets rather than the aesthetics. I feel like it should be the other way around.

If everyone could easily get full sets of these no one would be interested in them at all. Collecting 101: extremely limited supply relative to demand equals big price tag. There is no grand conspiracy here of rich players to lock everyone else out of these, it's basic supply and demand. It was a completely unreasonable expectation for the overwhelming majority of players to ever "complete" a mini set prior to the 7th gifts and it still is. If you want to get technical no single player even has a complete set because of the frogs.

Nice Robocop avatar, Reformed...
I was on a b-day mini-pet kick before the HoM rewards were announced (back when they were cheap). But now they are all just sitting in the bags of 2 mule toons.
The mini's that mean the most to me are the ones that I actually "earned" or dropped for me, like the mini moa chick.

I like to think of it as having some humor to it. Something that was intimidating in the storyline like a titan or a destroyer made so tiny and docile, it just makes me giggle. Sort of breaks the fourth wall a bit though. I liked collecting them just for the sake of collecting rather than just HoM scrambles.

Economy 101: whoever controls the majority of the limited yet relatively highly demanded supply can dictate the prices.

To me, they mean that the powers that be thought their game would shrivel up and die (i.e., stop producing profit) if they didn't give people something random to do and/or some way to feel superior to (or at least as good as) others.
Here are minipets: Collect them all!
Here are inscribables/greens: You're pro, too!
Here are destroyer/oppressor/tormented weapons, etc.: Go farm stackables!
Here's polymock: Here's another game to play in case you don't actually like guild wars!
These are pacifiers. A fondness for these things is a sure sign of mental girlishness (which is OK if you're a girl).

Slighly off topic, but what are the in-game signs of mental manliness, then? Other than listening to something else while playing rather than touchy GW soundtrack.

Collecting 101: It's only worth what someone will pay for it.
The market determined the price of (for example) MKGs and those winners who sold made a conscious decision to take "fair value" for them. It's not a conspiracy. No one is going to sell a very limited item for a price affordable to the masses unless they are ignorant or trying to make a point.

Oh, of course. The thing is that soon after MKGs were released, it was the market that set the prices, or, well, the commonly known and accepted market rules. If someone bought them all out two days after their release, getting every issue of MKG in their hand, well, that's where the problem starts
Same if someone controls over 90 unded Asuras at the same time - making lots of profits on them is pretty easy then.

In case you didn't get it, it was also a comment on how stupid calling something 'a sign of mental girlishness' is. Thank you for pointing out that there are us, mental girls who like some parts of the game, and others, manly Hulks with their big and rare hammers for smashing and bashing.

Now this is off-topic. Answering that question would take us away from the meaning of minis (which my post addressed explicitly). Instead of answering your question, I will refer you to the collections thread, where several of the manliest artifacts in the Guild Wars universe are on display.
You asked what minis meant to me, so I told you. To me, they belong in the same bin as the other junk listed. I have no desire to take this thread off topic.

I have only two minis that mean anything to me:
1. Naga Raincaller that I won from the mini madness contest. Which meant that I was lucky.
2. Polar Bear that I got after years of farming. Which meant that I was obsessive and lucky.

My Gwen Doll is very dear to me. Not because it is (was?) very expensive and something to show off, but because I really wanted it and worked so hard farming Nick for 7 months and just getting the common present drops. Then suddenly during Wintersday 2009 she dropped from a gift set of just 5. I felt it was sort of like Nicks xmas present for me. I also like my celestial pets (cow, tiger, rabbit and dragon, those are the ones I have). I just like how they look really.
