Is this a temporary shift in focus until GW2 is released or will this be the way it is from now on, even after GW2 is released?

It's quite obvious i guess, balances and bug fixes is what they did in last 2 years, so obviously there won't be much anymore...

At least, the good point is that they're clear for once: they will only do balances and bug fixes, that means we don't have to expect anything for PvP in the future, so i'm basically done with it.. I'm still sad that i predicted almost everything for months and now i can predict that the game will be farmed everywhere by bots and abusers after GW2 release...

What a panic over nothing. The game won't stop working. The live team is not repsonsable for operations. NCsoft is repsonsable for the servers running the game and the support team (the ones preventing bots and hackers, or atleast they are trying to). This isn't changed. They are merely stating that they won't develop new content for the game (at least for the time being). They obviously finished the birthday-content (new gifts). The first festival that needs a new content is halloween. Though they might decide to automate stop developping new masks and birthday gifts.

The only news is that they won't make a beyond episode in Nightfall, but there have never been solid plans for that as far as I know. Arenanet promised to keep GW running, they never promised to keep developing it.

They promised to keep supporting it, not just running.

Honestly after reading this I really doubt they'll do any bug fixes or balances at all in the future. They hardly did already in the last period of time, now that they're all shifted I see nothing coming, at all.

As someone said, it shows how anet is being poorly organized. They never can calculate what they're able to do. They don't have enough time, they don't have enough people...clearly it suggests nothing good.
I think gw will be freezed at the current state and we can expect at max to have servers still running and something automated, but nothing more. And I bet gw2 will be poorly supported and developed, seeing their actual situation...it's good that I was never interested in it, or I would now start thinking to abandon the project.

Just my thoughts and a bit much bitterness.

Honestly i think people are overreacting a little bit, they need all the manpower they can get and for now that means including the gw1 live team, for some reaon i am pretty sure that the live team will get back to it shortly after the launch of guild wars 2.

If i was in the directors seat, i would do the same thing.

There maybe quite a few ppl still playing GW after GW2 Launch seeing as the announced last night via there facebook page that GW2 is region locked but country, meaning if you travel you cannot play, but there looking for a solution.

Quote:
Guild Wars 2
Here are some answers and clarifications for you! First, if you purchase the game from https://buy.guildwars2.com/ you'll automatically be sorted into the right region.

And don't worry -- we want you to play with your friends wherever you are. This policy only affects where you can login from -- not which worlds you can access. People from NA will be able to play with people from EU at launch. We've got two datacenters -- one in NA and one in EU. Those who do not fall into either of those two regions will default to the NA datacenter.

Finally, we are aware that a lot of our players travel, and we are looking into a solution for you.

Hope that helps some! ~RB2
And from reading the 400 odd replies to it, it would also seem that, if you try and buy the game from the US to install in the UK ( because its like 40% cheaper ) it will not work either, because the games are region locked too.

You'd figure a game thats been 4 years in the making, they should have had this problem sorted, or at least warned people along time in advance not 4 days before Pre-Purshase.

I hope it's late April Fool's joke if not ... They are moving people from GW1 to GW2 instead of hiring new ones => either they are in bad financial shape or they really don't give a s*** anymore about an old game = there are no projects. And I can't imagine GW with even less updates.

Do not think I am not grateful. Quite the opposite. If WiK and WoC were an expansion I would have bought it. If they announce new stuff(content) I will buy it. **** if I get those Ranger / Para updates I will even give a chance to GW2 ... but if it "kills" GW ... meh.

What kind of sick marketing move is this? Advertising your sequel(the day before its preorder) by leaving behind the prequel. WTF! Definitely it's all about the money ... but at least before it was well-hidden(or I'm getting smarter ).

It used to be annoying when, even in late 2007, they were delaying updates and doing less of those , saying they were working on Guild Wars 2..

They didn't really get what to do. At first, PvP is supposed to be the endgame after you cleared all you could do in PvE, but they never really developped PvP, so most players stood in PvE and the few PvP'ers started to leave.. Most players kept playing PvE thinking there would be change along months, but considering we " only" had a couple of new quests since 2007( those are taking place on cantha or tyria, no new areas.), and we're told something like " that's it for GW1" ...

We can just hope GW2 to be a great game actually, else there will be huge disappointments from many i guess

But opinions based on reasons can be better or worse, more or less criticizable, depending on how well the reasons actually support the opinion. We are all entitled to our opinions, no matter how badly supported they are. But when we discussing them, and putting reasons forward for them, we open the door for criticism. Not criticism of ourselves as people, but criticism of particular opinions.

You have not yet given any reasons that this actually reflects poorly on Anet. You've said what you wish for ("My wish would have been for them to double the size of the GW1 team to 8ish, as this would only decrease the GW2 team by 4%"), and you've explained that this is not what you expect from them ("If we can expect this kind of support in GW2 after the game comes out... well I may have to reconsider whether or not I really want to buy another anet game."), but you haven't explained why yet.

Do you think we deserve more than we've currently gotten? Why? Do you think Anet has an obligation to continue providing content for the game? Why? (What would the content look like? Free updates like GWB? Paid updates like BMP?) Kunder was, I think, suggesting that to say that we deserve more than we've gotten is to hold Anet to far, far higher standards than any game developer currently meets.

Nobody is denying that this is, in some sense, disappointing. But one way to be disappointing is just to not be what we want. Rain can be disappointing if you want to go for a hike, but that doesn't mean you deserved sunshine.

Not doing anything in PvP for years, ignoring the community( leading to joke contests and formats deletion) , hoping for changes( new HA maps, npc ia fix, inactivity, etc..) to be told such a thing... I don't think that's really fair( should i also mention bots and cheaters ? )

So they added new content yes, but are quests that can all be done in a week at best really that a big content upon a 4 years scale ? Also, do you think we would have had all of these if costumes didn't encounter such a success ?

Personnaly, i would still say that the job they did in PvE is good, but awful in PvP and i just hope that GW2 will take into account GW1 problems..

1. Yeah, pvp's been way more neglected than pve.

2. But that's getting to a different issue. So far you're still just listing things that are disappointing. The question isn't what more could they have done that would've been cool. (Rangers and paragons spring to mind. And I still miss TA before it became super degenerate.) It's whether it's reasonable to expect more of them--whether pulling the live team really does reflect poorly on Anet. They haven't addressed all the community's requests and concerns. That's certainly true. But that only reflects poorly on Anet if it's reasonable to expect them to address (at least many of) those requests and concerns.

Of course nobody's saying Anet has been perfect. (Or, at least, I hope nobody's been saying that!) They've made lots of mistakes. If you (generic, not you particularly) think that the mistakes they've made over the years are substantial enough that you don't want to buy GW2, that could make sense. But that's about whether the changes they've already made were the right changes. That's separate from the question of whether we have reason to expect them to put more resources into GW, either right now or in the future.

It's starting to get funny in this thread. Anet's financial plan is based on how much games they sell. You can't expect a game without!! monthly fee be supported that we as a customer snap our fingers and they change/fix things.

At the moment Anet is prolly investing (loosing) money and not making money. And this investment isn't going to be paid of by a 7 year old game, but by a brand new game. So it is very logic to put all hands on deck for releasing it as soon as possible within their quality standards.

Instead of wining bout what they didn't do, I would like to thank Anet and specially the live team for all the updates we got for free. We didn't ask for them when we bought the game, they didn't promise them, but I really enjoyed GuildWars Beyond, Nicholas the traveler, dervish update, mesmer update, ele update, etc, etc, etc. So thank you. Some updates could have been better, but all have been fun.

Here's the answer. It has nothing to do with Anet's poor resource management, especially considering GW2's Live Team is supposed to be rather sizable once it's formed.

There's still support for GW1, there'll still be bug fixes (you can just go over the official forums and report new bugs, as always), and the ele's/ paragon's/ ranger's skill update is still being worked on, regrdless of how much time it might take.

It's just that GW: Beyond content has ender or has been halted. Still, we have 28th April to look forward to an update that is supposed to be "surprising" to us all. I personally loved last year's birthday update (Razah's profession switching, high-poly in towns, an HM quest, the flux, localizing friends, etc), so let's see what they have prepared for us this year.

The problem with hiring new people at this stage in development is that they won't be up to speed in time to make any significant contribution, and they'd also be distracting the existing developers. That's especially true seeing as how GW2 is almost complete, and the need for developers will fall after it is released.

Using the Live Team makes sense, and they'll be back at their posts eventually.

Anet has not distributed very well what resources the have between GW1 and GW2. This has resulted in a steadily decreasing lack of support in GW1. The whole "4%" quote was an example of what I would have expected anet to do if they cared more about providing support for their current playerbase. The example was to illustrate my opinion that I would not mind if GW2's release date was pushed back by 4% if it meant that we got twice as many updates in GW1. Once again, it was just an example that I used to illustrate what I think anet should have done.

As for my opinions regarding GW2 support, I don't really know what to think. I was just pointing out that dev support and regular updates are important and if we aren't going to have those in GW2 (as we haven't had much of for a long time now in GW1)... well lets just say that it will serve as a downside when I decide whether or not I want to play GW2.

I don't know why people keep bringing up this money issue. I'm not suggesting that we "deserve" anything. I still want to see regular support and updates for GW1 though (particularly large skill updates for the neglected classes - fingers are crossed that they will release a para update anyway, though i'm not really expecting them to do so now). Its silly to say that anyone is entitled to anything in an online game, but its not at all silly to ask for or want anet to spread a little more the resources they have.

Absolutely. People here seem incapable of grasping the fact that new people buy and start playing guild wars all the time. While you may have been playing it for 90,000 hours there are people who just bought the game yesterday. They deserve an active support team and updates. If anet has no intent to continue supporting the game they need to disclose that when they keep taking people's money instead of misleading them.

They should at least honor us with one big final skill update that makes PvE and PvP fun again before they completely let GW1 go. I really wish I'd see some buffs to certain skills to shake up the meta one last time. They should increase the amount of build-variety in all professions so that there's at least 3 different builds with great synergy, and that make sense. After this update, all they should be doing is tweaking skills if they prove to be OP. Just sayin', seeing Smiter's Boon, and other skills like it that're nerfed into oblivion, isn't exactly thrilling, and shouldn't be left like this when there's just sooo much potential for improvements.
