The main reason they keep GW1 on and will continue to keep it on is because the minute they shut it down, that puts an expiration date on GW2. Nobody wants to buy a game with a fixed lifespan. Keeping all their games running is critical to any MMO company's credibility. As soon as they start shutting things down, that company is basically dead, no one will buy another game from them. This is especially crucial for Anet because of the Hom link they have between GW1 and GW2. Shutting down GW1 is basically shutting down part of GW2. It would be a huge blow to player confidence in GW2 and generate a ton of bad press and ill will from the remaining GW1 players.

You say that Anet is a corporation and exists to make money, which is entirely true, but in the same breath you make an inconsistent argument about them keeping GW1 operational as a favor to us. They keep it open because it's important for their image and that ultimately helps their bottom line, even if GW1 itself is not profitable. It's not a favor to us, it is a business reality that we happen to benefit from.

Everyone understand that nohting last forever and has an end, and I think we agree that GW1 has reached the end of the life cycle. I don't believe that closing down one game would mean a lot to the success of another game. The tombraider franchise is still rocking even though you need emulators to play the original game. what I am saying is that this is the number one gw1 community. Arewna looks at us but has made up their mind (imo) bout future updates. They will, I expect do some minor tweaks to the auto-pilot, but in the end the moment of pulling the plug has also to do with how they like us. put yourself in their place and imagine telling us that they are pulling the plug. What would be easier? if we are wining all the time and demanding impossible updates? or if we are still showing we are very enthousiastic? A lot of business people will claim that sentiment doesn't influence them, but it does.

on a total different note. (and sorry, but I think this might be important).
In the past it has been hinted that the role of evannia wasn't played out yet. Many believed that that role would be told in the gw beyond story off the founding of Ebonhawk. there is a book (or actually 20 volumes) that is telling the story of the founding. I'm putting the next bit in spoiler tags. it is a book you can read in GW2 and it has no influence on the GW2 story-line.
(just so you know what im spoiling).

My point is that the gw beyond content is ment to bridge the story of gw1 and gw2. I do believe that at one point the liveteam wanted to visualise the founding of ebonhawk and the foefire. But the fact that the story has been told (I left the foefire out of my spoiler but it is as well in gw2) is for me a sign that they wont tell it again in GW1. again; I hope I'm wrong here.

There's a significant difference between a game that first debuted on a now defunct, in every sense, games platform and a game that has a direct gameplay, even if aesthetic, link to a a recently released one.

QFT. I'm not a big fan of people talking like they're in the business. But this post is point on and ectogasm made it eloquent and stated what is easily obvious without having to sound like some insider. Also if they shut down GW1, Blizzard Entertainment will laugh their asses off and might even capitalize on it in the press or social media. I don't know if they would. I'm not saying I know they would. Just thought maybe. It would definitely make the news on IGN.

GW is still being sold btw. Some people who play GW2 first may feel the need to play the original too just to see where it comes from.
