Update May 18, 2013
Automated Tournaments
- Automated the distribution of gold trim for the Monthly Automated Tournament.
- Automated the monthly selection of maps for the Automated Tournaments.
Weekly Bonuses
- Weekend events are now weekly bonuses, lasting a full seven days and changing on Mondays.
- PvP and PvE weekly bonuses now run on separate rotations.
- Added new PvE weekly bonuses that will appear in the coming months.
Codex Arena
- The skills in The Codex are now on a weekly schedule, changing on Mondays.
General
- Foreman the Crier has been added to all major outposts to announce currently active weekly bonuses and festival events.
Lots of changes there....not sure what they will 'add' to the weekly events now. (the weekend event for this weekend: lucky...will go until monday and its FOUR times the 'usual' rate!)

Wonder what the new bonuses will be.
Also is it bad that I got excited when I saw it was more than a one-line update?
This movement towards more automation is a nice thing. Perhaps it will allow what's left of the live team to concentrate on more pressing skill-related issues that have long been simmering. *cough*Paragon*cough*

This surprises me. Not the automation changes, but that they actually make real changes to the game. Creating a new form for weekly bonuses, and new bonuses itself.
They even took a bit time to comment:

It's hard to believe that there's been more than eight years of Guild Wars. So much has happened since our release in April of 2005: two additional campaigns, an expansion, two major live story arcs, new festivals, new content, countless new features, and quality-of-life improvements have been added to the game. The change has happened so naturally over time, it's hard to believe how stark the difference is between when the game first launched and how it stands on the live servers now.
Over time, our focus has shifted to updates that not only help maintain Guild Wars but help the game maintain itself. With this focus in mind, we'll no longer be releasing any new content for the live game except in support of automation. Our goal is to get the game to a place where it can continue to run and be available to all of our fans. We have a lot of love for Guild Wars—it's the game that made us what we are today—and we want to continue sharing it with everyone!
I want to make sure that players correctly understand our intentions behind these changes and the overall push for automation. As I've said, we want the game to be in a place where it's able to take care of itself. While we will not be producing new content, the Live Team will still be around to perform critical fixes for crashes or other serious issues. We want to support the players who made us successful by ensuring the game provides the best service possible without constant supervision and attention. Reducing the need for manual intervention makes it easier for us to keep Guild Wars running in the years to come.

Bonuses for all week vs weekend only has been asked for a long time by those who can't play on weekends, I'm happy to see it come true. And also splits between pvp and pve. Maybe it's the time I can get enough kurzick points to get the elite armor for my ele, since there's no way I can buy all that amber :P
On the other said...how can they say they love the game? After what they're doing to it all this time and while saying they're only gonna put automation in it for the time being? They always make me so sad and angry at the same time...

The "extra luck" event of this week increases by four times the chance to get keys/ lockpicks, unlike the old weekend version which only increased that chance by three.

Reading that they're definately not doing anything else with this game sucks. The week long events imo are a way of speeding up titles people want to do for HoM to get them out of this game into GW2 or just off the server period.
I was really hoping they'd wrap up the Evennia situation and add the final planned content for NF.

what he said.
Its a cop out---'we dont want to do any more work on this, everyone should move on to our great uber wonderful game so we want to make sure everyone gets their HOM's full quick so they arent dividing their time between these games'
I think they should have learned a VERY long time ago, that that just aint gonna happen....for example: pre searing, everyone should move out of it and onto the 'real' game, however, there are people who STILL havent moved out of that area (anet did get the idea and made it more ...er, profitable, to stay in pre), everyone should move to pvp after finishing the final mission ....er, no, I, for one, hate pvp and have no intentions of playing that way, so they created 'end game content'. So you think they have learned that people just arent going to do what anet wants them to do! People are going to continue to play guildwars even with anets new baby that they want everyone to love and play, just aint gonna happen.
I would suggest they try to make those people happier like they did with the pre searing people, the pve only people, etc. (they did nothing for the pvp only people--that should be addressed as well). It would make business sense to keep as many people happy as possible without pissing too many off (that is NOT good for business!).
ah well, they wont read my ramblings, and since they basically insist that there was no game before gw2 I doubt much else will get done, pitty since they dont see the long term.

Actually while I would love to see more development in the game, I do think this update was better than nothing. Depending on what the *new* weekly bonuses might be, it might actually bring a bit fresh air into the game.
And I'm still optimistic that eventually even some ArenaNet staff might get nostalgic and try take up the project again.
Question: If they released a "GuildWars 1.1" where all graphics and sounds have been updated to more modern standard (but still with settings to cater all from vintage computers to powerbrick computers), would you buy this update?
And if they made a restart of Guild Wars using same new engine on new servers, would people want to start out all new fresh? Maybe two new servers.. one old school Prophecies only, and one with all current contents. Either server would be completely isolated from original, but still be the same game just on an updated engine.

There is nothing wrong with the GW graphics or sound. That's not what people want when they're asking for an update, certainly not something I'd expect or be willing to pay for.

bummed they didnt add heroes or henchies to pvp and that no paragon splits were done for pve. i would have just reverted paras back to their launch skills for pve and kept pvp paras the same. rangers never got any love either? odd. oh well, i saw that they added the events to be week long. people love the HoM rewards in GW2 for sure. People are always rockin that armor and some of those weapons are my fave skins in the game.i'll always miss gw1 after they turn the lights off permanently, but i tried to go back to it a few weeks ago, and i was shocked at how a game i had spent thousands of hours in suddenly felt archaic as far as the controls went. i think it still looks wonderful, but man, i had no idea how old the mechanics would feel after playing gw2 and ToR.
