Coming back to GW1 because GW2...
Well, I'm sure enough people who have played GW1 and then GW2 can see why maybe someone would want to come back to GW1, but I'm hoping that GW1's community is still alive and well.
Part of the reason I'm coming back is because GW1 just has this feel to it... It's very Guild Wars, and I just never got that feeling with GW2. It was like something was lost in transition to the sequel. Also living story... Ugh.
Also, a huge reason I quit GW2 was because after working so hard to get to lvl 80 on my necromancer I have basically been told that the class sucks and people don't want me in their groups for dungeons. That was pretty much the last straw for me... Especially after reading up how ANet handles class balance in GW2 (short summary: they don't really handle it).
Honestly though, compared to the necromancer in GW1 and the necromancer in GW2, the necromancer does suck in GW2. I really missed having a loyal following of undead minions. GW2 necromancer was just nowhere near as cool as GW1 necromancer.
GW1 still has a ton of content I've never seen, and great quests I've yet to experience. So I'm excited to get back into it. Now hopefully the support team gets to me in less than a week so I can reset my password as I don't remember it (wish I'd known password reset required you to have the serial code as I would have kept my box if I'd known that however many years ago I got the game haha).
Once I do get in though, are there still some nice active guilds? I realize GW1 is now 9 years old but I'm hoping it's not too dead...

welcome back! Yes there is still quite a bit of interest in this game so you should have no problems finding a guild and having a wonderful time.
As for gw2, yes there are plenty of folks here who have played it and have returned as well, there are a few who play both and a bunch who have never played it (like me).

Kamadan/Great Temple of Balthazaar are the places where most guilds try to recruit. You can ask in populated places like that and probably find a guild.

I don't think I've ever been to either of those two places. I gather Lion's Arch is no longer the popular place to gather then?

kamadan american district is the only place where you find guilds.... well, sometimes they appear in international, but then i'm alone there and they (for some reason) still recruit
even in port sledge i see them in international district..... nearly noone who doesnt do all vqs and carto's knows that place, same with other places nearly noone uses
so just go to kamadan america 1, there's enough who recruit, and also sometimes people teamup and do runs there, even when a dungeon is needed
..... seems embark beach still isnt becoming the place its supposed to be

No clue where any of these places are so will have to figure it out (I haven't played GW1 in forever so could just be my bad memory).

kamadan is the first real city you get to in nightfall (you complete the first mission, do a quest and that is the outpost). It is the major city in nightfall (like kaineng in factions and Lions Arch in prophecies). Embark beach may not have been around when you last played (or you may have just never gotten there), it can be reached by the scout in most major cities (and mission towns), he has an ! over his head, yet offers no quest, just transportation to embark beach---be careful with this, however, if you have not yet made it to LA (assuming you started in prophecies), you will have to find the person to take you back to your last outpost (tyrian travel npc).

Well, tried resetting password with Guild Wars 2, but seems that account was hacked (no clue how an account with literally a 20 sum password with both on and off caps and numbers and letters was hacked) as the name I put in for a character I know I had doesn't work correctly (the passwords to both GW and GW2 are the same) so now waiting for more support... Seems like GW2's support is just a slow as GW's support. A person can hope, right?
Also, the fact that the password reset requires you to remember your character name when some people take breaks from games and also your account could be hacked and characters could be deleted (like it seems my case is), is one of the dumbest things ever. They should replace that with a security question honestly.

Kamadan is not only place to find guilds. I've started new few months ago;
and have been getting requests from guilds daily all through pre-searing, ascalon city, etc all the way up to lion's Arch.

ok, you find MOST active guilds in kamadan, lets say its the best place then
also, alot of guilds invite anyone who has no guild, even if that person rejects a million times (i've had that.... just NOT literally a million)
and, pre searing is a pre searing community mostly, they do have people who go post searing, but also many people who also play pre sear alot

after the massive disappointment that GW2 living story turned out to be I find myself going back to my roots. Good old Guild Wars. I had read on the guru that things were still active. and my hopes were high when I got pre-searing and it was fairly bustling. Now in post-searing ascalon there are 5 of us at most. My question then is this: does it get better?

pre has a HUGE community. Once you leave you have 4 different areas that you can go to (if you have all the chapters and eye), that leaves a LOT of places for folks to be.
That being said, there are places that you will usually find people--in prophecies Lions Arch, in nightfall there will always be people in kamadan (factions gets little love though its my favorite chapter). GToB usually has people too. Weekends will have more people than weekdays.
Many are now playing with just their heroes, though you can find active guilds too.
Hope this answers your questions and Welcome Back!

Thanks for the welcome this is my all time favorite mmo and I just still wanted it to linger around. It's so beautifully done it's hard not to see this game as anything but a labor of love.

Have you tried login In to gw1 with your gw2 pass?
I remember linking my gw1acc with gw2 and then my gw1 suddenly had a new pass. I fought with support and such but I the end I just had to use my gw2 pass

Ive been playing some gw2 and i can enjoy it for what it is but by god i miss gw1 like you wouldnt believe. There is this magic in the game on all levels i just love. I still even have my pre-searing ranger cos i cant let go of that area.
And its not nostalgia cos the game is still 100% awesome despite the age.
