But lets say that program you downloaded is malicious virus/trojan. Your hardware firewall is not going to keep that piece of software from calling home. Unless your virus protection catches it first.
This is where the software firewall helps you. It monitors both traffic coming in to your computer from the network and connections leaving your computer that you did not consent.

Sygate
Both of which are great. I use Sygate. And both have free versions for personal use. Don't let Back orifice or Sub7 take advantage of you .
Cheers!

System Mechanic
Would System Mechanic be totally obsolete?
I see that Amazon has it for $10...
Just curious.

Depends what version they have I guess. System Mechanic Pro 5 is what I got. 70 bucks US. So that must be an older copy you're seeing on Amazon...

Update and Thanks!
I have undergone a fresh install of Windows XP Pro.
I installed SP2 prior to going online.
Installed AVG anti-virus, updated it of course.
Purchased System Mechanic 5, updated.
Followed Dark Vipers instructions on how to improve WinXp.
(I think that was his name...)
Got rid of Earthlink and switched to a local company(Xmission)
My system is running faster, my internet seems to be faster as well.
I appreciate all the help everyone gave. Your input and guidance was invaluable.
For those that say GW doesn't have a strong community.
I shake my fist at you.
