[Graphic Error] Texture bug causing game lags
Hi,
since I bought this game I have a totally random error messing up my graphics.
The textures of the ground disapears while the game begins to lag (not playable anymore). All the texture become plain green/orange/black rectanlges.
I'm using a GeForce 4 TI 4200, with Win XP sp1 and a Athlon 2200. So I tried to update the GFX card drivers, and I still have the bug.
I already played graphics intensive games like Half-Life 2, Doom3 and many others, with the very same configuration. So it is a game problem.
When "reseting" the graphics, whether by changing resolution, going to windowed mode, minimize/maximize, the textures come back to "normal" state. But it's not something that you want to do in the middle of a critical fight.
I've found out later than taking a screenshot within the game fix the textures. But I end up each day with +-150 BMPs i of 1280*1024 in the screenshot folder, eating a huge amount of disk space. So I would like to fix this annoying problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

I kinda like the checkerboard effect.
Seriously, I had a GeForce 4 TI 4600 that was overheating with GW. I also couldn't monitor the GPU temps with that card using the NVIDIA drivers, and my BIOS at the time didn't support NVMonitor (for NForce chipsets) The quick & dirty way to test the overheating issue is just to pop the case open, point a household fan into it and then play. If the problem stops, you'll need to research some additional cooling options.

It's not an overheating problem, pressing Print Screen wouldn't help then. Sometimes I get the bug and then no more for the next 15 minutes.
And I seriously doubt than this game is more ressource intensive than Doom 3 and HL2.
It's a game bug.

You probably do not have enough video texture memory. Try increasing AGP aperture size in BIOS.

Hello
Thanks for contacting the Guild Wars customer support team and sending us the results of the Dx-Diag test. We recommend you install the Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, as this might be the cause of the problems you experience. You can get this Service Pack via the Auto-Update that’s included in your Windows, or from the official Microsoft Homepage ( www.microsoft.com ). Please refer to your Windows Help for additional information on how to update your Windows.
This should resolve the issues you are encountering. If it does not, please let us know and we will work with you further to resolve the issue.
Kind regards,
GM_Rithen

Seriously, SP2 is...bad. Just my 2 cents. Oh yeah, and I had a similar issues with graphics, except the ground textures AND people were showing up as BLOCKS of light. (they were glowing...it looked really funny while watching cutscenes). It turned out the problem was with a memory slot on my motherboard. I'm running at half memory now and all graphics problems are gone.
So I guess I'm saying test your memory. If you have two sticks, try swapping one out. Blah blah. You must've tried something similar if you've ever played WoW.

That happens to me too, the same. exact. thing. The only difference is that the textures become completely white, white chocolate-like. Anyway, minimizing and going back fixes the problem.

I only started playing yesterday and im very impressed with the game so far but im getting exactly the same thing happen. If i press the windows key and then go back into the game it clears the problem but it happens randomly.
I can run eq2 on my system without any problems what so ever so its rather frustrating.
If you have found out a way to fix this could you respond. Thanks.

To the guy slating XP SP2, there is nothing wrong with XP SP2. I have it installed and so do many other players, who don't have any problems at all, and all are running the game fine with this kind of hardware. So before people start slating SP2, get facts straight first.
It can be many things, and most often it appears to be some sort of driver issue that Guild Wars for some reason, seems to be causing problems with, whereby no other games seem to have any problems.
With regards to the guy with a problem, why do you run at such a High Screen Res on such a low end card??
Why not try running the game in a lower resolution and see how it performs then.
Adjusting the AGP Aperture size could also help a lot too.
I would also Roll the Drivers back to a lot earlier version and not run with the latest drivers on your Nvidia Card. You will get no real benefit out of using those drivers, and more often than not they cause severe problems on older cards. Newer drivers don't really give any advantages on older cards, as they are more optimised to the newer cards released anyway.
Use the Driver Cleaner program inbetween the Uninstall and ReInstall. And roll the drivers back to Forceware 60series drivers.
Opbtain both the drivers and the Driver Cleaner program from www.guru3d.com
This seems to have fixed a lot of peoples problems and is highly recommended.
I would check your Mobo drivers too and make sure you have them installed correctly. Check for any Yellow Exclamation marks in hardware just incase you have a hardware error.

I'm using an older set of drivers at the moment as the latest drivers cause games to crash. I have an oldish graphics card but it still performs well considering.
I had a mess with with the agp settings in bios and graphics card settings in windows and ran the game last night for about 5 hours and only had the glitch occur once, where as the night before it was happening regularly.
So there's a big improvement but im still non the wiser as to the reason .
