I'd only had the 6800GT 3 months when the card's life was up. It literally cooked itself. No overclocking...and with 6 casefans in the case, air circulation isn't a problem. They're notoriously hot, even at idle temperatures. Anyway...I took the card back to the store, being that I'd kept the receipt and the box. They offered to exchange it for another card that worked of the same model. Since I'd had rather bad luck with that card...I wasn't exactly ready to get another POS...only to have to replace it again 3 months down the road. Since the "store credit" applied...and the X800Pro was the same price...I gave ATi a shot.

Was an immediate improvement over the 6800GT. And until nVidia pulls their heads from their rear ends...I won't buy another one of their cards.

Everyone's got their opinion. Mine would have to be ATi at the moment. It's just plainly better made. (I mean FFS, the ATi Logo is on the Guild Wars box...which card do YOU think Guild Wars is probably optimized for?)

-Wired.
So, because of one faulty card that makes all 6800GT's bad? Seriously. I don't think its Nvidia thats in need of a head pulling if you truly believe that. Buy a BFG 6800GT OC card, true lifetime warranty and is more powerful than any X800 Pro on the market.

Far Cry was a TWIMTBP game, and the x800 XT PE's outperformed 6800 Ultras. In other words, just because ATI dished out money for advertising doesn't magically make their cards run the game better.

Principa, unless I am reading something wrong, we are in agreement

In GW, Anti-aliasing doesnt mean much... seems we agree on that...

nVidia beats 'similar' ati cards... seems we agree on that...

As for whether or not nVidia handles anti-aliasing better than ati, we seem to agree that it depends on the game (guess I should have been more clear on that point)

Anyways I was just offering up an opinion... I forgot how people tend to get hyper when asked "which computer product is better" or I would have left it to the pro's
And NO, I am not accusing anyone of getting hyper....

I have a nividia 6800 256mb card and it looks amazing, i like ATI for my HL2 but they are roughly similar in my respects, but some games run better on different cards....hope that helps

You're quoting outdated ATI cards.
The counterpart for the 6800GT is the X800 XL not X800 Pro. The X800 Pro could not compete with the 6800GT so ATI introduced the X800 XL. The 6800GT and X800 XL have similar performance but the X800 XL is cheaper.

Klrakhi, please read what I actually wrote before you quote me with a "put-down" in future. I specifically said vanilla 6800's, not 6800GT's, you quoted that part yourself.

Actually, you're the one quoting out of date video cards as the 6800GT counterpart is the X800Pro, and the 6800Ultra counterpart if the X800XT. Nvidia have no counterparts for the X800XL or the X850 series because they've not pushed any new cards in the Geforce6 range for some time. You'll see this soon enough, as the 7800/7800GTX they've been working on for God knows how long will be released in about a month's time.

Comparing a 6800GT to an X800XL or the X850 series is like comparing a 9800 Pro to a 6600GT.

If Nvidia actually ever released an X800XL/X850 counterpart, then we'd be talking, but the point is purely moot.

The 9800, based on the R420 chipset, belongs in the generation of the FX5000 series. Just check when the 9800 was released, it is a pretty old card. So it makes no sense to compare them.

The 7000 series Nvidia cards are to be compared with ATI's upcoming R520 series.

So logically, all the ATI X series cards, including the newer X800 XL, which are also based on the R420 chipset, should be compared with Nvidia's 6000 series.

I believe they have stopped manufacturing the X800 Pro as it is not competitive and the replacement is the X800 XL, which is cheaper than the competition and performs as well.

Yes, but they do not have a direct counterpart in the Geforce6 series.

X800 - 6800
X800 Pro - 6800 GT
X800 XT - 6800 Ultra
X800 XL - ?
X850 - ?
X850 XT PE - ?

I'm looking forward to seeing what ATI cook up when the Geforce 7800 hits the shelves though, maybe the X850 XT PE will drop in price, because it's my current holy grail.

That was my entire point. Comparing a 6800 GT to an X800 XL is equally silly as there is no Nvidia counterpart to the X800 XL. Red herrings, false dilemas, and whatnot are all good, but if we're talking ATI vs. Nvidia then let's stick to cards that actually have a counterpart.

X800 Pro - 6800 GT
X800 XT - 6800 Ultra
X800 XL - ?
X850 - ?
X850 XT PE - ?
This is my list, based on price and equivalent performance:

X800 - 6800
X800 XL(was X800 Pro) - 6800 GT
X800 XT PE - 6800 Ultra
X850 - No equivalent
X850 XT PE - No equivalent

Well Principa, I have both a 6800vanilla and a 6800gt, dont get me wrong the 6600gt is damn fine card..but i have to disagree with you saying that they benchmark better than a plain 6800, my 6800 benches just uner 9500 on 3dmarko3, and with the card overclocked and the extra pipes unlocked it'll hit 11500 03 marks, a little less than my 6800gt....

When i'm able i'll post a futuremark score for reference

EDIT - and answering your question Freejet, use either nvidia or ATI, whichever card you prefer and what your budget can stretch to, both make great cards....

The average 6800 benches within the 8k range in 3DMark03, Ramus' score for example was a perfectly average vanilla 6800 score.

hmm, well mine must be above average, it's a run of the mill sparkle 6800 nu, but will never bench below 9500(approx) on 3dmark03, if thats the case then i have a damn good card....

Probably, Sparkle make good GPUs anyway. And don't forget that it will take processor and RAM into account, and even the mobo. Sounds to me like you just have a very well-built system with good cooling.

It was not meant as a put me down, simply a "look what I can get". Jeez, stop being so insecure.

I'm not being insecure, I just simply don't like being quoted with a point that has zero relevence to what I said. It's called spam.

Yeah principa, was surprised about sparkle products myself, alot of people put them down, and yeah i have a couple of high end amd64 set ups, so the rest of the components contribute in a big way....

Just recommended a mate buy a bfg 6600gt, he wants some good bang for pound(buck just doesn't sound right for a geordie), would even get one for myself if anything happened to my babies

I have to agree with you that some people are just a bit too touchy, when opinions are voiced

ATI x800xl - retail for $300
asus 6600gt oc - $200

is the ati x800xl worth the extra $100?
and will it work on the asus a8n delux SLI motherboard? this is gonna be my first time making a comp, heh.

The x800xl is quite a bit faster than the 6600gt, but you can't compare them as previously stated in this tread. Very different architecture

If the x800xl is pci express then yes it will work in that motherboard, but if you want to go sli, you'll need to go nvidia for the moment, so i would say save your cash, get a pci express 6600gt then add another when you can

You can ask anybody who owns one or has owned one how fantastic the performance of the 6600GT is for the price. But it's really up to you. The X800 XL will perform a lot better, but you'll get 60-80 FPS with the 6600GT in Guild Wars or Half Life 2 or anything in high resolutions with antialiasing etc. enabled.

It's really up to you. If you want the better performance go for the X800 XL, but if you want massive performance for 2/3rds of the price then the 6600GT is the card for you, or for anybody actually. And as cannonfodder pointed out, ATI Crossfire (SLI) is not available yet.

i see, so the x800xl is better suited for future games than the 6600gt is what you're saying, quality whise.

what is the fps with the x800xl since 60-80 is with the 6600gt oc, and how do i see my fps when playing guild wars, i havn't been able to check it.

don't you think that the x800xl should be compared with the 6800 gt around $300. since they are in the same price range
