*insert long swearing rant about port forwarding here*
Okay, I gots me a port problem, which has persisted over about a year and a move of house.
Basically I am with an ISP, iinet and the line provider is Transact. Both of them say they are not blocking any ports. We have two computers, one running Windows 2000 and the other (mine) running 2003. Both have the problem with ports.
I bring up soulseek and test ports, closed. Emule, closed. Bittorrent, closed. Kazaa, closed. You get my drift.
So I check up D-Link and get the manual out, port forwarding. Hey, there's nothing blocked on the modem, but I forward the ports anyay. Closed. Hell, I forwarded every possible goddamn port and it's still closed.
So I contact support of all three, ISP, line provider and modem manufacturer. I should be being hit with every goddamn trojan in the world by now and they tell me to turn off my firewall. Hey, I don't have a RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing firewall dammit.
This problem pisses me off so much. What the hell is wrong? Why are these ports closed? How can I open them?

software firewall ?
Restarted the router ?
Updated the Router Firmware ?
Have Service using the port ?
Have Virus or trojan using the port ?
Have spyware using the port ?
Setup port fowarding for the correct computer ? (A foward links to an ip, the ip of one system, the system you intend to run software on that needs that port fowarded)
Setup port triggers instead of fowards ?
On a Proxy ?

Have you done a hardware reset of your router to clear out any IP addresses and Ports that may be locked in since the move?
Also, uninstall and reinstall any firewall and virus software yu have installed on your PC incase the same thing is happening there.
Does this happen on both machines? Do you have any problems with any other software you are trying to use?

Happens on both machines, yes we've done harware resets countless times and this has been happening before the move. I don't have any firewall or virus software as stated in the original post.
I have the firmware up to date, nothing I know of is using the port/s, considering they're closed I'm not aware anything can. I've scoured this system and the other countless times, it's pesisted with installs of 2000, SuSE 9.1 and the current Server 2003 so it couldn't be a virus, trojan or spyware. I've set it up properly to the right IP, then to range and even eventually forwarded all the ports which still didn't work.
And no I'm not on a proxy, not that I'm aware of anyway.

The ports will be closed as this is the default "state".
To get them to "open" you would need to start the relevent server.
For example, if you had a web server on your PC, then port 80 would be "open".
(assuming your PC was directly connected to the net - not that I recommend doing that)

Change router, dont use a D-Link. They're cheap enough to buy.

Take the router out of the picture temporarily.
Unplug modem
Switch connections so your PC is directly connected to the modem
Restart modem.
This is a good first step.
Make sure you don't have any firewalls running, and keep in mind you aren't running a service - you're the client, your only connection should be port 6112 outbound.
Are you sure THEY knew what you were asking with the blocked ports? A lot of providers have taken to providing 'extra security' by blocking ports. I know mine has - I can't get past their borders on port 25 or 110, so if I want to use email it's the ISP's server or nothing.
Good luck,
-sam
P.S. I love your avatar.

--> I don't have a router. Both PC's are connected directly to the modem. I did ask about it and was on hold for 20 minutes each while they buggerised around trying to find out.

Does the modem itself have a built in router? (if it has DHCP server, it is a router built in)
if your IP from the modem is in the range of 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x or 172.16->31.x.x your modem has a build in router. (X can be any number from 0 to 255).
Btw, why use windows2003? its server software, not made for gaming.

Well looky there, it has a built in router. It fits that exact description. Now how do I disable this then?
Also I use 2003 because I heard it was stable, grabbed it and when I needed to reinstall on a new HDD I tried it out. Works nicely, better then 2000 imo.

iinet block port 80 and 113 by default (i think it's 113 anyway). You can turn off that port blocking in your iinet toolbox if you specifically need to forward traffic on those ports, but i don't think that's your issue. What model is your modem? I'm guessing its the 604-T as that's pretty much the standard iinet bundled modem these days. Anyway, make sure you've got UPnP enabled on the modem. That'll dynamically forward ports for any program that supports UPnP (read: most good P2P apps).

Well for one, it's a DSL 302G. I have no idea where I would find port blocking in the toolbox of iinet and I don't see an option for UPnP in the modem settings.

Toolbox->Account Settings->Port Blocking->Toggle Port Blocking
That only blocks ports 25,80,139 and 443, so unless you need any of those, that's not your problem.

Indeed, no UPnP on that. Have you tried following this guide? They're generally pretty good and easy to follow.

Depends on your brand. But on these I have been onto we have just put them in whats called Bridged mode. Then firewall and DHCP server is disabled, and you get IP straight from your ISP. Only problem is if your ISP only provides one IP for each modem.

So basically they don't want you to run any Authentication Service(113) or http server(80).
Portforwarding for this game is not necessary. Portforwarding is only for programes/games that requires external connection to you. Something GW does not. The game uses port 6112. On my setup I have blocked port 6112 for external connections. And the game runs smoothly.

Actually while I believe you to be correct in this Arena Net Explicitly stats that port 6112 must have unrestricted outbound and inbound connectivity.
Port 113 Is IdentD

This should explain a lot:
Edit: On top of that I also went in and added each individual port one by one before I pulled this.

Yup, Authnticate server is known as IdentD
As long as you dont block outgoing on 6112, you will have unrestricted access inbound & inbound. Your the one who initiate the connection. The router knows this. If their server initiated it, it would not be able to start GW here.

If the portforward side is correct you have just forwarded any external IP & any external port to these adresses 10.1.1.1, 10.1.1.2, 10.1.1.3 & 10.1.1.4.
Try to change that into;
Local addresse from : Your game PC's IP
Local addresse to : Your game PC's IP
Global addresse to and from is as it is with 0.0.0.0
Destination port to and from should both be 6112
Same goes for local port.

WOW set your protocol to TCP? .1 is comp? and .4 is router? you sure? and what program uses port 65535? Dude I garuntee it is your NAT inbound. I had that same EXACT problem for YEARS and that's how I fixed it. Although I have heard of some ISP's closing ports (like mine did) for security and to 'stop illegal activity' so I could'nt upload anything. But then I was like "I can't upload and that's only have the service, give me half of my 65 dollars back bitch" then I went on to threaten about BBB and such. So they opened up my ports and I can upload stuff in IRC now. wewt.
