CD Drives have disappeared.
This information is still relevant. If you experience this issue, use the fix highlighted in red in this thread.
If you need further assistance, please start a new thread.
I installed my x850xt which connects to the power supply like my old card. When i turned on my comp my cd/dvd drives were missing. When i go into BIOS the drives are detected and i checked the IDE and power extension cables, those are all connected properly. (pleas for help)

to be honest....I don't care WHY the problem is happening anymore. So we'll just force it to fix itself.
open your registry(run - "regedit" {enter})
Locate this key...use F3 to find it.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
On the File menu, click Export.
In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.
Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. click yes if it asks you to verify.
Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete .
Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
we'll just force windows to hard install the drive again.

Hi Ryan, nm that people just a friend of mine, we live in same town, now I'm helping him out w00t w00t. Ok, now ryan my first suggestion is to I know this sounds weird but find new drivers for your CD/DVD drive. Then if that dont work go to the ATI site and try to get some trouble shooting help there. You could also try reinstalling the CD/DVD drive because it worked before with your 9800xt so just remove it and put it back in. Another suggestion is did you do the add new hardware if you go back into it and try to trouble shoot it through windows. Just my suggestions hope they work.

It can be a power problem. That card is very power hungry, so if your PSU is less than 350-400W its possible that the ati card is "eating" all the watts and theres no left for the cd/dvd drives. In BIOS the card uses much less power than in the Windows GUI. That can be the explanation for you seeing the drives in the BIOS and not in Windows.

You can look at the back of the CPU, and if the info is not there then you must open the box (probably it should have a lateral panel with 2 screws)
You dont need to remove all the screws and pull off the psu, I think you should see it.

Completely uninstall your ATI X850 card. Use the Driver cleaner pro software to remove any reference to the ATI drivers on your PC and then switch off the PC. Put your other card back in, and then check that the drives are available when you boot into Windows.
If they are, make sure that the card's drivers, whatever one you are using, are also completely removed from the PC. Then switch off again. Remove the card, and replace with your X850xt card.
Reboot the PC. Before installing the drivers, double check if the CD/DVD drives are available. If they are not, then it's quite possible you have your power connector for the card, running off the ones that are connected to your CD/DVD drives, and this is taking power away from your drives.
If you have it connected this way, make sure the card is connected on it's own power lead, and run the drives off another power cable from the PSU. Make sure the Graphics Card is running from it's own power connector.
If that doesn't work, then it could well be a driver conflict between your drives and windows, and something to do with the ATI card.
Uninstall the drivers for the drives in the Hardware options, and maybe even a reinstall of the IDE software may be needed.
A list of your hardware would also help and what OS you are running.,

I put a different power cable on my card instead of running it from the drives, uninstalled drivers, cd/dvd drives arent there. I really think this is a problem with the IDE ports/cables/hardware

sounds like it could be an IRQ issue...
unplug the CD and DVD Drives and make sure they are set to Cable Select.
there will be a set of 3 double-pins inbetween the interface connection and the power connection. Generally cable select is the middle two-pin configuration(the jumper should be over them)...but check the top of the drives for the diagram...some lite-on drives(I know for sure) use a three-pin configuration.
IF...they are set to cable select...you could try switching one to master and one to slave(I'm assuming they are on the same IDE Cable)...then booting the machine.

I've tried every combination with ms/cs/sl, before when they worked the dvd drive was a secondary IDE slave and the cd rom was the primary IDE master...worked fine, until now.
