Default MBR editing

K, I was playing GW with a few guildies, then I get the blue screen of death. No idea why, but apparently now the system folder is corrupted. So I replace that, it gets repaired.

Now my partitions are screwed. It sees my system partiton, but not my files partition, where I keep everything. In every program I have got, it can see that other partition and that it's fine. It just wont allow me to repair the MBR of the system, no options to. Fixmbr in the recovery console doesn't do a damn thing either.

I need to know where the hell I can grab and edit the MBR manually so I can fix this. All searches I have done have just come up with "HAY GUYS! CHECK OUT MY COOL PROGRAM TO FIX YOUR MASTER BOOT RECORD! IT'S ONLY FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS LOL!"

The MBR thing is a scam. Also, it has no relevance to the BSODs.

But your problem is a bit more serous and requires either a reformat and or a reinstall.

I hate to say it but I think you're screwed. You may jsut have to re-format/re-partition and re-install windows.

This might help with what you're looking for?

to clear out the MBR.. u use fdisk i beleive... like

fdisk -mbr

I think... use a boot disk. It'll recreate itself when u reboot.

But I don't think that will solve anything... just thought Id let u know how.

MBR and partition table are not the same thing. If you can boot the machine (you said your "system partition" is working) then your problem is not your MBR, it is something else. Your partition table, possibly, but more likely a corrupted file system: this can often happen when a machine suddenly shuts down, especially when you get ye olde BSOD. From your post, I can't tell whether you are able to boot or not. This part especially is confusing:

"It sees my system partiton, but not my files partition, where I keep everything. In every program I have got, it can see that other partition and that it's fine."

A little more info, please?

Well in a rather lame outcome, I discovered that all I needed to do was give the damn thing a drive letter. BOOM. Everything worked fine again. Or so I thought. All the drivers were screwed up beyond repair and as a last ditch attempt, I disabled all the screwed ones, including the video driver.

Ended up reinstalling, good thing I keep my personal files on a seperate partition. I just reinstalled, the OS, programs and everything's fine again.
