You need a new cooling solution. Yours is obviously either crap, or dying crap. Either way it's crap. It needs to be replaced. At the same time, try changing your case airflow setup so that more air is exhausted. That helps a lot, too.

I'm sorry but this is NOT an overheating issue. Simply because the minimizing/maximizing of the game don't left the time to the card to cooldown really ! Example... I started to play and got bugged after 20 minutes of game... Minimizing/Maximizing, zouip no bugs again ... 3 hours later, same problem... Stopping for dinner ... I played 5 hours in a row without any other bug this evening but got one after restarting the game later. It seems to be related to texture loading, maybe a network issue, dunno, but it's just annoying.
I tuned my comp, in many way, I checked RAM, CPU, Graphic Card RAM and used internal GPU gauge to see the temperature. My card never go upper than 47°... I changed original cooling from MSI to a new one, Zalmann, then a Thermaltake Giant III with is covering the card completly... My CPU is under 45 and my Mother board under 31°... at full charge. So this is definately not a overheating issue.
This happens on a random basis, when some effects, generally glow, or smoke, cross the way of the camera, generating a big lag spike and heading generally to a completly grey screen. Just minimizing and maximazing the game and all is back to normal. Seems to be a DirectX/Driver issue or compatibility and NOT a overheating issue.
Some other games or bench are as intensive as GuilWars is and I really think it's game related only. I don't have any problem of this kind with WOW, HalfLife 2, Doom 3, UT 2004... I can tell it's only a game problem linked to 6600 GT... or to a nVidia bug with the AGP cards. All the 10 person who got the same problem got a 6600GT... AGP one for all... or 6800 GT AGP. So it's related to those card models, I think.
I've the same card that the first guy and the exact same issue, and I gave you a link ( the link ) to another post with people with this exact same issue. Just report it to Arena.net... I'll feel less... Unique

my PNY 6600 gt is overheating
This pretty much clinches it in my eyes:
Have been having the graphics problems described here (flashes of bright colors, in my case mostly red) with games ever since I bought a PNY 6600 GT. I've seen this graphical corruption in at least 3 games: GW, KOTOR 1 and Tiger Woods 2005. I've had this problem in one form or other using Nvidia's last three drivers (66.93, 71.84, 71.89). Nothing on my system is overclocked. No extra fans installed in system except what came with the emachine and vid card, etc.
Once I removed the side of my case yesterday, the problem in GW completely stopped (haven't tried the other games, though).
my system:
AMD 1900 emachine S1940
350 watt power supply
1 gig RAM
Win XP SP 2

I don't trust PNY as far as I can throw them, but that's just me. When I'm buying Nvidia cards I only buy from BFG, XFX, or Chaintech.
Edit: BTW check out these drivers. They're the official ForceWare 71.24 drivers and you have my personal stamp of approval that they're the best for any 6600GT.

Good choices, i'd add MSI to the approved list. Gainward is good too.
Turn off postprocessing, for crashes on super effects, and I still think your card may have problems. Was the heatpipe assembly installed correctly? Did you use enough thermal paste? You may end up needing to fiind another card to test with.
I can tell when I have access to a computer that the first thing I'm gonna have to do is start a damage diagnosis guide. That and an overheating guide, cause too many of you seem to be.

Well....been in and out of my machine for a couple months now...seems the issue has been diminished somewhat by latest updates, but it still happens from time to time...HATE when it happens in the middle of a mission...I beleive it is DEFINITELY NOT an overheating issue. Been monitoring the hell out of it...rarely gets above 56*C...Just has to be a graphics issue. Tried multiple drivers deletions and re-installs, cleaned and checked drivers and registry...nothing has gotten rid of the issue. Thanks Childeric Kaldor, for the link...at least I know there are others suffering along with me in this. I keep sending bug reports...may as well be farts in the wind. No issues with any other games, even though I run them at full graphics settings...gotta be a GW issue...The real bitch is when it happened in the UnderWorld...hhmmmmmm...do i leave and miss out on loot as well as abandon my party, or stick around, unable to fight and get flamed as a moocher? Tough call...I stayed or course...made 1200 gold just sitting in the dark...there are 5 other rangers who hate me now...sheesh
