I think I might be having the same issues. I have an Asus mobo but am running a ati 9700 pro vid card. I've ran Doom 3, WoW and everything else fine, no crashing issues. With GW I find that the game either BSOD's me or just freezes my screen with a grapical glitch and locks up. I've tried omega drivers and the ATI offical drivers, same occurance. This usually doesn't happen until I've been playing for a while though. I'll be plugging away for an hour or two and then, bang, game crashes and computer locks up. If I reset comp and restart GW the chances of it happening again increase dramatically.

I'm starting to think that perhaps I'm getting over-heating issues as well. I'm not sure how to check this but from the symptoms I'm getting and what I've read here, I'm starting to think that this could be my issue.

Motherboards shouldnt get to 80c, (thats near the boiling point).
No program can cause the temperature of hardware to increase beyond the cooling. Processors max out at 100% usage. After that there is no more. IF the cooling can't keep up with the usage, it will continue to get warmer and warmer until the processor locks up, or worse is damaged. Don't forget, sometimes temperature sensors can be off by a few degrees, showing warmer or cooler than they really are.

If your cpu temperature keeps increasing to dangerous highs, (and certainly beyond 60c with xps is dangerous territory) then the problem is your cooling, not the game. You need to either replace the HSF, or it needs a good cleaning.

If you're locking up because of heat, the problem is your setup. IF correctly setup, no pc should overheat.

I have also been having problems. It strts with some minor graphical glitches in the game, with each battle (graphical conflict) they get worse. until the program freezes. When it simply freezes I have always been able to ALT+F4 to a nice normal desktop. But I cannot CTRL+ALT+DEL or minimize.

However, twice the game has crashed to black, and my computer rebooted. This points towards the heat problem. Especially because once the problem happens (usually takes an hour or two) it will happen much sooner apon entering the game again.

My most intresting of such crashes to date happened in a party with a warrior and another elementalist. Right when I crashed the other elementalist did too, in perfect sync we left the warrior alone. I would chalk this up to software if it hadn't been the kind of crash where my computer restarted. I don't know if the other elementalists did, but she took longer to sign back in than I.

I have a K7N2 Delta nForce2 motherboard (NVIDIA nForce 2 chipset based)
with an Athalon XP 2500 processor.
My graphics card is a Radeon 9800 Pro, it has its own hook-up to the power source so it wont draw power from the motherboard.

I have never had heat problems before, And I've run my processor to 100% rendering video in adobe premier pro while running other applications. which is why Im loathe to believe a heat issue. Haveing another elementalist (a very graphically splendid class) have a similar and syncronized crash game me hope it was software.

i think the pattern is clear: it's a problem with interaction ONLY between guild wars and asus motherboards (and maybe one other manufacturer's). i'm sure they'll figure something out. it can't be too hard to fix, considering it's the only game that does it.

Well i have been having the same problems, something i noticed is that when i Alt+Ctrl+delete and check up on guildwars, its taking up 90+ percent CPU usage (which i dont recall having it that high for any other game) and noticed its priority was set to "low" which is not at all normal and have never come across ANY progrem set to that. When i change it to normal it auto-switches back to low when i "alt+tab" back to GW

This sucks because i just got the game today

i've notices that my video card (radeon 9000) gets very hot to the touch as well when playing guildwars...

how do i check my video card temperatures? can anyone link me to a program for it?

and wats this heatsink thingie... my com is my bro's 1st attempt on self-installing so im wondering if he missed out the heatsink and thats the problem.
thing is i got no idea wat the heatsink is...

I fixed the problem, kinda. lol

I just decided to open up my CPU case and stick a big old fan near it and put it on full blast. Guess what? no crash, cept when i exited the game it froze up (it was doing that already anyways......) but i was actually able to go until i decided to take a break

so this confirms the heat issue i would thing

Well, it looks like Anet/NCSoft is looking into the issue.

I had mentioned earlier that I would check out heating issues in my Asus A7N8X Deluxe/AMD AthlonXP 3200+ setup.

I ran Asus Probe in the background while playing last night. After slightly more than an hour, my CPU temp had risen from 37C to 43/44C (most of the rise happened in the first 10 minutes). I do have 4 fans + PSU fan in my case and the basement location for the computer is pretty cool (68-70F).

Also, my XFX GeForce 6600GT does not get any warmer than 54C.

However, I can still get a random program shutdown at the login/character creation screen(s) -- a popup window then directs me to the Anet support site to verify my CPU/GPU is not overheating or that I am not overclocking my rig.

I agree with a couple of the other posters that this issue appears to be some type of interaction problem with Asus Motherboards (or maybe the nForce2 chipset). I look forward to the fix.

a small note
someone opened the case and vacummed out the dust bunnies and lost 25C doing it (from 75C to 50C)

the few people with problems in relation to the number of people happily playing says something

^ uh huh one user that doesn't know how to care for a system final does so and solves a problem. yea but what about those of us whos system are cream of the crop in top shape? 44 degrees c load on my cpu here and every other temp checks out ok. oh but whats this, im also using an asus mobo, albeit an a64 socket 939 via board, and not nforce 2. though my problems started YESTERDAY after one of the first patches. and of course other games and apps check out fine. as for the temp = crash theory. IT IS VERY POSSIBLE that there is a bug in guildwars causing the steady increase in the temp reading. (notice i said reading)the temp readings the mobos bios gives out are not 100% accurate and are subject to being read wrong. its very likely that the increase in temp is not an increase in temp at all but an increase in the temp reading, but the motherboard does not know this and would shutdown.

looks like were finally starting to see some connections and possible problems here. so maybe we can get it solved. lets face it this game is buggy and subject to problems like any other. now we need a fix. all we can do is wait.

Funny I came across this thread.

I have anecdotally noticed that GW seems to pound my system more than other games.

Since buying my rig, I've been able to run my A64 3000+ at 2.2ghz (10% oc) rock-solid in hours and hours of HL2, Doom 3, WC3, etc, etc. No problems.

However, with GW, it started crashing on me with memory errors and such. And I don't run crappy memory (Mushkin Black).

So I lowered my o/c to 2.1ghz (5%) and everything runs fine.

Now 5% isn't a big deal but it is interesting to note that GW is doing something to my system that other games are not...

PS: Oh, and I have more than adequate cooling. 2x120mm Panaflo L1A case fans, Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu. All going full-bore. Again, the ONLY time my 10% o/c fails is in GW. Everything else is 100% stable...

I got the game this morning and I've experienced the same overheating problems

, the thing is for me though, that I can't get past ten minutes of play at best, with extra fans blowing over my laptop and have tried everything including propping it up to make sure only a few points of it are touching anything solid

I was so looking forward to playing this game as well, and from what I have played I love it

I've submitted a support ticket from the main site but have had no answer, does anyone know when we'll get this patch, or I'll have to ask for a refund and then I won't be able to play it at all

I used to have crashes all the time with graphics-intensive games because of overheating. I went into BIOS and changed my AGP throughput from 4x to 2x, and it made everything better, with very little noticable performance drop. It's an option to try for anyone who seems to be crashing a lot with no other apparent reason.

I have tried to underclock my system and have managed to get the game running for around ten minutes on a regular basis through doing this but its not really a proper solution, it still ends in my computer resetting and therefore must be getting close to if not already damaging my system

Asus M/B here, Intel 3.0 Prescott CPU, GForce 5200 (128). I spent for a decent copper fan and a tube of Artic Silver thermal paste and never get readings higher than 27c.

My partner, on the other hand, regularly has freeze ups and lock ups that I am certain are due to over-heating. But since he won't let me touch his machine, he gets to deal with those on his own.
