Well I know most of you while playing GW your game freezes! Your on for a couple minutes, then it freezes or when you open your Inventory, it freezes! you can only take so much!! or trade, etc..

Well here is a solution that might help!
1. Go to Desktop and right-click on available space, then go2 properties, then settings. Change your color quality to Medium(16 bit) click apply and ok.
2. Make sure there are no other programs running.
3. Make sure you have the recommended settings for yor game! go to Options in GW or push F11! and turn your settings to the minimum!
4. Are your Graphics Driver updated?.

I can't say this will help you, but it did for me!

If problem still persist, then we should start a petition for a patch that would fix, these crashes and games freezes! Good luck!

Not sure if this is related, but always turn Off virus scanner when playing games.

i never turn off the firewall or AV or the other protection software i use.

i have not had any problems yet from them.

Oh, and yeah.. turning off protection devices is never a good idea. If that's causing the issue, buy a stronger computer.

I don't know what can happen during game play that will need virus scaner running in background.

I never have AV in backgroup and I never have virus problems. I always scan any files I download from the net before I run them.

Anti spyware is another issue, I always have it on when I browse the net. And I have my IE security setting set to pretty high and only add sites to trusted sites if I know they are trust worthy.

try adding a few fans to your case , grafics cards usualy over heat with this game.

Sooo true.....

and make sure they are set to blow OUT of the case, rather than suck IN....
unless they are at the front, in which case, suck in is correct....you can have them both ways on the top, since hot air rises anyway, and sucking in cool air at the top is usualy good for tyhe prosesor...

also, if you can stand the noise and are in dire need but cant get out/afford a new fan or two...a desktop room fan, with occilate turned off can be a godsend ^^

acording to some poll, if you have a desktop fan running next to your PC, your an overclocker ^^ pfff, i have but its cause i stuck my fan on suck when at the back and i cant open it for a while to turn it to blow lol

another thing...
processors...check regualrly that they arent gunked up...i once got 16 degrees drop temparature and fixed the rebooting/crashing of a machine, simply by cleaning out the gank in the heatsink...
vid cards....the same can be said of the fans on the vidcards. also, make sure yours (if it has a fan and not a heatsink) has got no busted bearings. the fans that get busted bearinfs are hard to turn with your finger and can make auful rackets starting up. this means your fan is on the way out, btw, so if its possible to change the fan or get a replacemnt, i would do so as soon as you can...i know this cause i have lost 3 vid cards over the years i have had PCs, all 3 to busted bearings causing the card to heatdeath ofer too little cooling

and remember.....if your sitting there in the winter with 3 coats on, your PC is a happy bunny ^^
unless you have a problem with the cold, slap on a jumper or a sweater, but leave your central heating off for the room, it not only makes dust out of you, but the heat costs you cash and its bad for your pc

whenever you have any 'live connection' to an open portal your AV/Firewall/Spyware should always be on. Common sense ... unless you want to leave a streaming door open to your computer. You dont need it to scan for viruses ... just turn off auto scans and live updates ... that way your gameplay will not be interrupted.

if you're computer is on the internet(and more specifically running Windows) it's open to attack...whether you are doing something or not.

they dont seen to know that as soon as their PC is turned on and they have thier BB modem lights running that their machine can get attacked, virused to frell and more....
explaing that the moment you hit the broadband connection and you has win2K or Xp you were going to get Sasa? whoa...20-30 mins, even when the boss takes over speaking the mothertongue heheh.

so the firewall should be running...simple as that.
it took the boss 1 second to catch sasa the day he got his store PC to connect to tiscali....and all he was doing was saying can i go on bb now please, mr tiscal server

A firewall running in the background is absolutely necessary, and rarely causes problems with games. A virus scanner running in the background however, is not necessary and conflicts with games fairly often.

I would like to state for the record Guild Wars has never crashed nor frozen on me.*

*with the exception of my girlfriends computer who was trying to run it on an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 card...crashed in trade, creating pvp chars...etc. We fixed it by buying a cheap 30 dollar GeForce4 MX equivilent online.

edit: Strangely, the latest ATI drives messed up the graphics on guild wars slightly...

yeah, most home computers get "hacked" or "attacked" not by simply connection to the net, and some hacker decides to hack it. It's by users downloading and clicking random stuff from random porn sites without scanning for virus, or without spyware protection.

To be fair, a coimputer on broadband connection with a completely new Windows XP (without SP2) install and no firewall will most likely get messed up within minutes, even without the user doing a single thing other than connecting to the internet.

I've done a lot of windows installing/rebuilding recently due to computer upgrades. I did those with internet connection connected and only windows XP (without sp1 nor sp2) CD. (finally got around to create a XP installation CD with sp2 pre-patched on it, but it was after those installs)

Never had any problems.

There are a lot of port scanning going around, if I look at my firewall log. But they are not as horrifiing as we may think.

If you watch what you do on the internet, a software Firewall is not necessary, IF you are behind a NAT router. I know people who don't have a software firewall and don't get infected.

I run Guild Wars with everything running, no problem.

I think a lot of people (myself included) have had problems due to the rpc blaster exploit that was all the rage a while ago, which would cause your computer to shut down by itself. This happened to me once, even before I could patch Windows. Thank god for SP2 and slipstreaming it into the XP installation.

Rayea speaks words of wisdom! I wish I had read this thread a few weeks ago, as I just fixed my problem last week and wish I had seen this first...it would have saved me some time, and possibly some money.

I just made two changes, and they fixed all my auto-crashing woes. First, my CPU's heat sink was gunked up with quite of a bit of dust. I just sprayed it with some canned air for a minute or two until I couldn't see anymore build-up. Second, I'm running a radeon 9800 pro, which sadly comes with a very small fan/heat-sink. I bought a new fan/heat-sink (~$20) and installed that in place of the old one. It takes up a PCI slot, and is now gigantic, but GW runs flawlessly now. I noticed that my CPU heat sink was dirty WHILE I was intalling the new fan, so I don't know which of these steps was the most important in my case.

This problem was particularly hard to troublshoot, because when I did get an error report, it would say something about my drivers being the problem.

At the very least, get some canned air and make sure your CPU heat sink is clean. It might be the best $5 you spend this month.

I tended to so this (hates to admit) till I found Nod32 anti-virus. Extremly light when it comes to resources and scan's fast. I also always run Sysgate Personal Firewall. Spyware/Adware/Malware protection I'm only passive check, I'm very careful with the web. I did find that Nod32 does does do adware/spyware/malware - it stoped real player from installing since it found weather bug in the temp install files.
