80 degrees C for a CPU temp is too high, even for Athlon's.

I have an AMD 2000+ system and, according to ASUS Probe, my CPU temp has always been at about 57 deg C, rising to say 62 or 64 when playing intensive games.

I panicked like mad to start with and tried Arctic Silver, more case fans and a more powerful CPU fan: none of these made any difference (bar 1 or 2 deg C lowering). It turns out, however, that my particular model of CPU just runs very hot at around 60 deg C - my system is super stable and I've had no problems or crashes in 2.5 years !

So if you can keep it below say 65 deg C when playing intensive games and it's stable, then I wouldn't worry about it.

If it's still up at around 70 or 80 deg C then I'd suggest you have poor connectivity around your CPU, motherboard and CPU fan. Try cleaning all of the above with an suitable cleaner and then re-applying the silver.

EDIT: and have a look/ post at the overlockers web site, their forums are very useful surrounding this type of problem.
