i just think i'm bad luck with VCs
hi...again.
i just installed my new VC, this time it works, but it doesn't play GW!!
surprising thing is thats its able to play BF2, but not GW, which is more important to me.
well the problem is when i turn on GW the screen just comes up with slighty diagonal colorrs across the screen, then my comp freezes. i think i just have bad luck with VCs. anyone have any suggestions. btw my old ati 9200 with 64mb was able to run it just fine, so i dont know why a gf 6600 256mb cant do it.

What video drivers are you running?
Have you tried installing different version's of the drivers? It seems diffferent driver version's have issues with different games, and these days you need to have a few on hand to go between to play the various modern games..
So maybe try a different version of video drivers? Like if you don't have the latest, you could try and install the latest driver's? Or if you have the latest you could try older version's till you get GW to work properly?
IMO your problem sounds like either a faulty VC or incompatabilities with the driver's your using - and if you can play other games just fine, I'd say our VC is fine and it's just you need to change to a different driver set for the VC.
I'm using 71.89 drivers on a 256 MB 6600GT if that helps. I have no problems running GW at all....

well i just tried the 71.89 driver and it doesn't help at all, infact it made things worse. when i start up the comp. the screen has alot of horizontal lines(blue and white) going through, when i restarted it it got stuck at intializing usb and i thought i broke like my ninth comp.
i dl'ed the driver cleaner pro, and made sure there wasn't any left over garbage. i read the sticky on the nvidia driver and when i looked on the disc it was the 77.72 driver. the difference is that my problem is that the game doesn't start right( it gets horizontal lines when done dl'ing a map) not the blue screen or freezes when exiting.
i wanted to try the 80.40 beta driver, but when installing my comp says that i shouldn't cause it may cause harm to the comp, so i decided against it.
also tried the 77.77 and that didn't help either. any idea whats the problem?
just tried the 78.1 doesn't work either.

You might want to try a Driver Cleaner first. Clean out the ATI type video drivers then install the Nvidia ones.
Not all the latest drivers are the best either.

The warning about harming your computer was from Windows driver signing(WHQL). WHQL was created by Microsoft where they test 3rd party drivers(Nvidia, ATI, AMD, etc.)with Windows and then certify that they won't destroy your OS.
For your problem, I think it's either a heat or hardware issue. If the problem only occurs after your computer has been on for a while it's probably a heat issue. If it happens even right after you boot your computer after a long time of it being off it may be a hardware issue.
To check if it is a driver issue(which I doubt is the problem)go into safe mode. To do this boot your computer up/restart and before the Windows logo pops up hit F5 or F6(F5 is without networking, F6 is with networking). This will load the standard VGA drivers that all modern video cards support. Safe mode is a diagnostic tool and is not meant for normal use. I don't know of any 3D applications you can use to test your video card with in safe mode. Most may not run at all while others will runs very slowly.

It's probably a problem with the card. Hit F5 or F6 as the computer right after you start the computer so you don't miss when you are supposed to hit them. If they are not working you can also try F8 which will bring up a menu where you can choose to start in safe mode.
Do you notice any problems with the video before Windows loads?

mines running 32bit i have tried 16 bit also and the same thing happens. my old 9200se is able to run it. i swear this stuff is attracted to me.
i'm tryiung to download drivers that are older than the 71s, right now i'm trying 66.93. jeez thats old. well my xomp is id'ing it as a driver something about a wdm, but all i know is that it isn't reading my VC with this driver.
the 71s messes up with my comp with horizontal lines and still has the same problem running GW.
Has anyone one else had this problem when trying to run GW.
i start the game up. the loogin in screen seems fine, but when i dl a map or try to change the graphics in the game the screen shows up in a mess of colors. this also happens now when i try to close out of the game amd when i press the restore size button.
any one have an idea whats causing the problem. at this rate i'll have to figure that its the VC and get another one. this is freaking ridiculus,.... grr.
i just reinstalled my 9200se and the game runs fine, does that mean its the VC's problem?
i can't figure it out...

the 6600 also crashes on exit for bf2.
here are the specs for my comp.
xp pro
p4v88 prescott 800 dual
intel celeron 2.4GHz
front side bus speed 133mhz
512mb ram
350 battery
agp
well i'm concidering getting a 6600gt, hopefully that will solve the problems i'm getting. do ya'll think that the specs on my comp. are good enough for a 6600gt?
i went on crucial tech.com and they said an x800 ati would be compatible with my comp, but they seem to oly promote ati cards. my price range is ~$145, i buy from newegg so i'm sure there will be something in that range.
any reliable ati cards that people use for gw and bf2 out there?

and your sure thats able to on my specs.
i've also noticed that cards have a requirement on the processors like pent 3 or even some with pent 4.
i'm looking at one that req. pent 4 prescott. will have a celeron affect the video card b/c the card i'm using at the momenet needs a pent3 and it seems to be doing fine except not being ablet to play my games

well thanks for the help for all those who responded.
if the next video card doesn't work i'm just gonna give up. so far bf2 cost me $70 in shipping and restocking fees alone with all the cards i had to return and $145 for the next one. bf2 better rock my world with al lthe trouble i'm going throught o run it.
again thank you all.
p.s. if i make another post bitching about the new card, someone just close it and end my misery.

hrmm, investing in a new processor would be smart if your using a celeron. i think the celeron alone would blow up your computer if you tried to run bf2 with it. the least you could do is but a p3.

i'm cheap and i'm poor. so i dont feel like it. well i'm gonna be gtting a 6600gt for the next card, i hope that'll work.
i never really wanted to upgrade my computer that much, just enought to play bf2 cause i dont really need it for much. the processor prolly cost another 200 besides and well i really dont feel like spending anymore than i have to. maybe in the future. wish people just told me u have to get a new processor first.
b ut seriously is that why none of the vid cards work, cause i'v been posting my processor and no one said anthing about it being the problem.
edit:
i just looked at some of the processors and damn were they expensive, most were like $300+, my cousin made the computer i'm using for ~$450, and i dont have anything to complain about except the fact that it couldn't run bf2. no, no,no, i might concider getting a new processor in the future, but i'm not a hardcore gamer who needs it. guild wars has been the only comp game i really played who's title was current other than that i played aoe2, risk, pax and thats bout it.

well, im just warning you, if you try to run bf2 with p3 it is probably nigh impossible, but with a celeron? i really have no clue what will happen, it doesnt matter if your VC is the best thing in the world, the celeron will probably beat it down into the lowest form of pulp there is. im sure there are people around your town/city who will help you out with the processor, you could probably purchase one at a used computer parts store if you have one. but you might be a new motherboard as well.

actually i been playing guildwars since a month after it came out with the celeron, so theres no problem with that. i started getting problems when i upgraded my video card. so hahaha, it'll run. the only concern is with the video card and if the processor is making it glitch.
